How about a completely unhuman lead? An insectoid Xindi or a Gorn?
Poor Michael Dorn. He must be forlorn. He can't get a show before the Gorn.

The longest running sci-fi show still on TV has an alien as the lead, that being the Doctor. My favorite captain, the Martian?
Captain Mork, from Ork?
Captain Alf?
Ugh. (Just trying to recollect TV series that were in any way successful that had an extraterrestrial character as the lead or top-billed.)
All comedy, by the way.

Ah, yes. OK, you sold me. It can work. The longest running sci-fi show still on TV has an alien as the lead, that being the Doctor.
It's be fun having a Tellarite captain. He'd insult and belittle all his subordinates as a matter of culture, they'd give it right back to stay in his good graces, and he'd get upset if his subordinates didn't argue with him about every order.
Well we had anAlien captain of the hero ship in Discovery, just wasn't the series lead.
Technically, wasn't Saru Captain of the Discovery in Season 3?
.
Yes, please. Farscape was amazing with the creature work, especially Pilot. I would love a similar show in Star Trek with a human as the first officer/executive officer, and able to explore humanity from a little bit different perspective.FARSCAPE had the entire cast not be human except for Crichton. That worked in spades.
Honestly, I'd love to see the Jim Henson Company get another space series. They are one of the few production companies to make their aliens truly alien.

There was a very long running series with a very nonhuman main character - Lassie (1954-1973)..
FarScape was awesome! I would love to see JHC develop another sci-fi show, their work on Rygel and Pilot brought so much life to the characters that I genuinely forgot they were actually puppets most of the time (whilst over on Trek there was such bland and forgettable human characters like Chakotay, Kim and Mayweather).FARSCAPE had the entire cast not be human except for Crichton. That worked in spades.

Definitely would work for me. How better to explore humanities issues and complexity than have the token human on the show offer their insight on the issue of the week.Yes, please. Strikes me as a completely reasonable way to explore humanity. Lord of the Rings did this quite well.Definitely would work for me. How better to explore humanities issues and complexity than have the token human on the show offer their insight on the issue of the week.
These alien characters all tend to have something very Human that audiences can relate to. Most alien races in Trek represent an aspect of Humanity--either past or present--for good or for ill.
But Crichton (Ben Browder) was the series lead, a human.FARSCAPE had the entire cast not be human except for Crichton. That worked in spades.
