Alien, Predator, AvP (news)

The first AVP is kinda terrible, but not unenjoyable, the second AVP is one of the most godawful films I ever saw in the cinema!

Yeah, it's like how I've described the AVP movies, the first one isn't all that great but gets by on the novelty of seeing the Alien and the Predator onscreen together. That novelty wears off in the second movie.

The first AvP movie had a great concept that works in the lore of the comics. The history between Yautja and Xenomorphs is long, and that they chose Earth with primitive beings that could be used as hosts and food for Xenomorphs and make it a hunting ground is pretty cool really. The biggest issue is a cast that just isn't very strong, plus they had to make it PG13 so the kids that know the comics and games can watch and well, their you go.

Requim was, as said, just awfull. It was nice seeing a PredAlien on screen, and the level of gore was what one might expect from a Predator movie, compared to AvP. But if that's all you're going to base your movie on, you're already loosing.

Predators and The Predator..... I both enjoyed them for what they are. Predators actually a lot more than The Predator. But for a mindless popcorn flick with a few beers, The Predator is still a lot more entertaining than Requim

Hopefully gonna watch Prey tonight. Is it true there's a full Comanche version as well as an English version?

It was pretty good. Brother did most of the work though. :)

The Yautja was interesting since his tech seemed to be less advanced than what we see in the other films; with him using bolts rather than pulse cannons. You could say that this is because it’s set 300 years before but from the novels etc. we know that they have had that tech for thousand of years. Could be just a traditionalist one who only wanted to use tech similar to that of the natives.

Speaking of the Yautja, they didn’t go into why he was on Earth. His ship seemed to be damaged. What happened to it that caused him to crash?

Given how little dialogue there is in it, there shouldn't have been an English version at all. It won't kill people to read a handful of subtitles.

The English version doesn't have the natives speaking English? Huh. I figured it did.

It does. The film was primarily filmed in English.

His ship seemed to be damaged.
I don't think it was damaged, it seemed to be either the cloak or the visible engine flare and some electrical discharge. Just IMO, naturally.

I enjoyed it. Best Predator movie in 32 years.

So that was a really great Predator movie!! I could go into a lot of detail, I'll leave that people who really love doing extensive movie reviews. All I know is, this is the best Predator movie in the franchise since the original. With a lovely nod to the second movie, by the way.

Yes, there is a dubbed Comanche version.
The way I've heard it, they filmed the dialogue scenes twice, both in English and in Comanche. If there are that few dialogue scenes, it would make sense, especially as they can be filmed concurrently (as in different takes). It's also both progressive to have a Comanche version, and a throwback to the 1930s, when they would actually film scenes in different languages for the international market, before dubbing became a thing.

As actors like Laurel & Hardy in the clip above would speak their dialogues without understanding the language, it's pretty clear why studios switched to dubbing, as honestly, as a German I can hardly understand what they were saying. That problem, obviously, doesn't exist with actors basically speaking their native language, as would be the case with Prey.

No, the Comanche version is dubbed. (The characters do speak occasional Comanche in the English version though.)

I'd be surprised if m/any of the actors speak Comanche normally, it's a very rare language these days. And are any of the cast actually Comanche? Amber definitely isn't, she's Sioux. The rest I don't know.

So, that was quite good, certainly better than both AVPs and The Predator, suspect I'll need another viewing to decide quite where it sits.

Feels like it was made for the big screen so it's a shame we couldn't see it at the cinema.

Took me a little while to warm to it as well. Some further comments.

First the good!

I liked the lead, and her brother, I liked she's was competent without being superhuman.
I liked the various similarities and differences between the hunters- Comanche, French, Predator, with the Comanche and the Predator perhaps having more respect for their prey?
Liked that the Predator was running through its targets. Mountain lion > wolf > bear > human
Loved his retro styling.
Liked that she won by guile as much as strength or skill, and that it wasn't just her skill as a hunter but also as a medicine woman that helped her defeat it.
I liked the herbs that lowered your body temp, neat idea
It's brutal!
The final third
The end credits/cave drawings that lead into SEQUEL!
It looked gorgeous.

Now the bad
She's a woman and nobody takes her seriously but she'll prove them all wrong and yadda yadda yadda, would have liked something a little more nuanced or original.
Some of the CGI was ropey, especially the mountain lion and the bear, possibly also the wolf.
So one minute she's sunk in mud, the next she's clean and her clothes and hair are dry?

Hmm, interesting, my positives outweigh my negatives, which suggests I enjoyed it more than I thought I enjoyed it

Anyway, definitely up for a sequel and guess that's a given since....
A/ This one's proving popular, and
B/ The Predators have to get that pistol back so they can give it to Danny Glover :p

Anyone know why the movie looked so good compared to the average movie? Like video quality seemed better somehow.
