Alien, Predator, AvP (news)

Aliens is easiest to spot by the inclusion of the Ripley's daughter scene in the Special Edition. Alien 3, the Alien comes out of a dog in theatrical and an ox in the Assembly.
I think it was the version I saw was with the dog.

Thing is that given the way the Alien looks, a dog makes way more sense than an ox, that's the only thing that I don't like about the Assembly Cut.

Except for the size of it when it's born. The dog-burster looks nearly as big as the dog as it came out of. Presumably a result of them not shelling out for a new puppet when the host was changed in re-shoots.

Which all helps set up my stance, that a crossover or easter egg doesn't mean that two universes are actually set in the same one.

Thank you. Most IP-crossovers rarely make an ounce of sense, with Trek and POTA at the top of that list.

Personally, I've never enjoyed the idea of cramming Alien and Blade Runner into the same timeline, and thankfully Ridley and co. has yet to make it proper-official, beyond some vague imagery or small text on a DVD supplement.

Agreed.

Are there supposed to be other aliens in the Alien universe (not counting the Yautja/Predators) besides the Xenomorphs and Engineers? I had on Aliens when it was on FX today, and I never caught the conversation about the Arcturians before, but it sounded like they aren't human, and then the references to it being a "bug hunt" seemed to imply that they've gone on other missions where they were hunting down alien creatures like the Xenomorphs.

It's been awhile, but I remember it being derogatory, bug hunts being like a wild goose chase.

Many people interpret the "bug hunt" line as meaning there have been encounters with other alien lifeforms.

I think it may have been a sort of meta reference to the fact that Cameron made Starship Troopers required reading for all the actors playing Marines in the movie, though I can't remember if there's any truth to that or if it's an urban legend or whatever.

It’s probably more likely that he hired either Dale Dye or R. Lee Ermey to train them. Not 100% sure of any of it.

Could be, but the Arcturian thing sounds a lot more alien, with the way they talk about one being male.

My guess is that they are enhanced humans...gene-splicing hackers...Total Recall's denizens come to mind.

Arcturus is Risa here.

It almost sounds as if no aliens of any kind were ever found.

Old farmer's herd chupacabred? Not an alien...just another splicer beast.

The Marines get jaded... actually hoping to find one---nope... another false alarm.

And then comes Hadley's hope...

Unlike Trek or Star Wars, this universe is pretty bare...or so it feels. A handful of aliens.

I dunno, the Suits who grill Ripley kind of make it sound like life on other planets isn't all that an amazing proposition.

"Are there any species like this hostile organism on LV-426?"
"No. It's a rock. No indigenous life."

They never specifically say that other planets do, but their tone certainly seems to point in that direction.

Also, though "bug hunt" may not be taken literally, the conversation does also mention xenomorphs, which Hicks takes in stride and simplifies for Hudson that it will not be a "stand up" fight.

Maybe light flora and fauna...bug hunt to them is likely meaning "giant purple people eater."

Then they got exactly that...

The internet is buzzing for about 10 days now when a fake poster for a Prey sequel went online. The tag said it would be said in WW2, but the poster obviously shows threnches of WW1.
Now, it's all fake and all, but it got me thinking....
Prey was a succes for the studios, well before the strikes hit. It even got a bluray release, quite a thing for a movie that was supposed to be streaming only. Yet we haven't heard anything more since about a possible sequel. You'd think that with the current climate of Hollywood draining any potential franchise dry, they'd be on that straight away, right?

The writers were on strike until a few weeks ago and the actors still are on strike. I don't think you'll hear much news about new projects like this until Hollywood manages to get the house in order again.

Again, the succes was proven way BEFORE the strikes. ;) Most sequels these days are green lit before you can blink.

And there was a lot of discussion about the sequel before the strike, too. But there's also a reason Prey wound up as a streaming only movie in the first place. The franchise hasn't been in the strongest position lately. So I definitely think they would not want any fully official announcements until they've got a lot more than just 'we're making a sequel' to go on, which will require giving the writers time to work and possibly also ensuring that Amber Midthunder will definitely be available, which she can't negotiate during a strike, etc.

That is a fair point ofcourse.
It's interesting that any sequel would involve Amber Midthunder. That would mean a direct sequel to Prey itself, while the franchise (except for AvP and AvPR) never involved direct sequels. Unless you only AvP and AvPR as sequels of events, since they don't share any characters.

We don't know for certain that it will, in fairness. But it certainly was left open as a possibility by the film which I'm sures helps drive expectations in that direction. And it certainly has a better case for going in the direction than the other films since Naru is easily the best and most popular hero in the franchise since Dutch and her world is more open than his.
