Alien, Predator, AvP (news)

At first I wanted to scoff at creating a show within an existing series and starting by discarding its continuity.
But Hawley (haven't we heard that name in connection with Trek before?) emphasizes their show is in continuity with Alien. So, the xenomorphs are the result of millions of years of evolution instead of "half an hour ago" an the Human tech isn't "thousands of years" more advanced, compared to Prometheus was to Alien.

Oh,that sounds like fun. For those of us who survived through the COVID shit show, that’s just what we want to re-live all over again. I’m sure it will do very well in the box office.

Was making. Covid is what killed it.

Literally what @wayoung said. It was in the writing process and then covid happened. The studios felt that MAYBE that wasn't such a great idea.

I was watching a Twitch channel that shows old movies and stuff and when they aired a movie about an outbreak I had to step away, I just had no interest in revisiting that.

Interesting if Hawley had conceived of that storyline before Covid hit and wasn't caught up in the zeitgeist. Bad timing, I guess, though I think this is probably more suited for him. I don't think Star Trek is really that open to new approaches, everything eventually gets beaten back to the status quo.

Bond was already filmed. Thi was still being written. They still hadn't even solidified if it was going to be starring the Kelvin Enterprise & crew or another, new crew set in the Kelvinverse.

It's worth noting that when Covid hit one of the most popular films to be streamed was Steven Soderbergh's Contagion!

They could just studiously avoid ever using the word virus, like Bond did?

I know they claim it wasn't the case but Bond was clearly originally about a covid like virus. All the stuff about nanotechnology is delivered via clunky voice-over by Q and a badly done scene where he's clearly talking to some body doubles in the inserts so they make sure you cannot see their heads.

I wonder if one day they'll release a special edition! A virus would have made more sense and would have probably leaned into Safin's poison garden better

I will admit, not following the Prometheus/Covenant story does make me sad a bit, because I'm actually a big fan.
I also feel that every universe has possibilities for many stories, and I am more than happy to see a different take on the pre-Alien setting. I can accept both versions.

Does Hawley not understand that the technology in Alien looked like that because it was made in the 1970s not because it was some deliberate design choice?

Exactly, the same as they do with Star Trek SNW, set 10 years prior to TOS but looks more modern.

The Nostromo-style set design has been used for modern games, like Alien: Isolation. It can’t be that dated.
