Aladdin live-action teaser trailer

It's not even that he looks similar to the cartoon version (He doesn't really). It's that there's somewhat of a dissonance the voice and visual going along with a sort of uncanny valley effect. Also, his face is skinny, but the rest of him isn't which adds to it looking weird.

At first it didn't bother me, but now I really wish they didn't make that genie so... Will Smith.

Yeah, that's a good point. Another thing, and this may just be picky, but the cartoon version's head was more proportionate to the rest of his body. Sure, it was more stylized, but then they seem to be using some of those traits here like the wide body, but not taking into account everything which leads to the dissonance. While this is a short clip, I'm not super convinced that Will Smith has the range needed in pulling this off. Robin Williams put in a lot of energy into his version of the Genie beyond just talking loudly.

Seeing that in the GIF now, there really is just something.... off about it that I can't quite identify.

It looks like they mo-capped his performance, applied it to a CG body but then photographically comped his actual face onto the head. The end result looks like a magazine cut-out that's been glued onto a blue party balloon.

It's very rare that an effect can managed to look both cheap and expensive at the same time, but they appear to have pulled it off...

Also, I'm not buying Jafar's voice at all. Way too soft, not enough sneer.

Party balloon! Yeah, that's a great description. The other thing this reveals is that Will Smith just looks odd bald. I thought the cartoon version had a bit of hair.

So, how long before someone photoshops him to look more like the cartoon version? ;)

I have no idea what to make of this.

Wasn't the genie blue in the movie?

Smith is a two-time Oscar nominee. I would say that he will do just fine. Only his genie will be probably different than Williams as far as verbal skills go. Do you expect his voice style to be the same?

I find it disturbing on how many are so eager to make assumptions about this film without seeing it.
