Spoilers Agents of SHIELD- The Final Season Discussion

I’ve always said Coulson is basically Colonel O’Neil and this solidifies it. :)
Very enjoyable episode. Shame there are only 4 episodes left.

Wow, that was a lot more than I expected from a time loop episode. I thought it would start them on a path to figuring out how to undo all the time damage done by the Comelyones, but instead it was all about things happening on a personal level.

More and more we're seeing that Coulson, despite his usual air of frivolity, is very unhappy with his current condition, and equally unhappy that he is there because of someone else's decision. This does not bode well for the future of the character. As I've said, this has always been the Coulson Show and I think we're facing the prospect of them ending together.

And then we have that Daisy and Sousa bonding thing going on. I have to say, I did notice some chemistry going on there, but I had it in my head that he was too old for her-- but, thinking it through, that's not really the case. This is a pretty cool development as far as I'm concerned.

And, almost unnoticed among all the other shenanigans, poor Deke was freaking out watching his grandmother die. Deke has levels.

The interminable circle of time loops ranged from agonizing to inappropriately hilarious. The sequence where Enoch repeatedly beat the crap out of everyone cracked me up. Over and over. "Is Deke dead?" "Yes." "Should we be sad?" "No." :rommie:

But ultimately it was Enoch who saved them all, by very phlegmatically removing his own vital organ for Gemma to use as a spare part. As she and Deke worked out the technical solutions off camera, Daisy and Coulson sat with him while he slowly died in one of the most drawn-out and heartbreaking scenes of all time. He lived an unimaginably long life that was so lonely that he didn't even know he was lonely, but he managed to find friendship before he died-- and his final thoughts were of his best friend Fitz. So much for my hopes that he would be a permanent part of the elite SHIELD team by the end. And, of course, one has to wonder, since he's a robot, why they can't just plug his thingamajig back in, but I suppose there will be reasons.

I guess his premonition that the team would soon come to an end was supposed to be ominous, but it struck me as an obvious red herring. I think things will turn out well for at least most of the crew.

Deke had a girlfriend a season ago, and he banged his way through the 80s.

If he's not keeping chaste, it's not exactly clear to Daisy that he is hovering and waiting for her to look like she needs someone.

Besides, Daisy is his grandparents' best friend. That functionally makes her his great aunt, which is all kinds of wrong.
Plus aside from the obvious fact that they're quite clearly not right for each other, there's the minor detail that she's clearly not even remotely interested in him.
It doesn't matter how deeply he does or does not feel; she is not obliged to give anyone "a chance" if she's not into it.

"Should we be sad that Deke died?"

"No."

Not fair, maybe, but oh so funny.

(Reminds me of the time XENA casually killed Joxer during her time-loop episode, knowing that it would be reset later. She obviously enjoyed getting that out of her system at last.)
Me too! That was another Groundhog Day ep well-done.

Re the mention of "filler episodes" a few pages back. People saying that always bugs me. Don't you like the show? :) Hell I don't care if there's a hard arc plot or just the characters sitting around knitting and philosophizing on the nature of sea anemones. I love these people and I enjoy watching them, whatever they're doing.

Case in point; one of the best and most well regarded episodes of the whole show is 90% just Simmons talking to her phone, shot day for night in the desert.

Yes it's fairly obvious that the last few episodes have been more or less bottle shows because renting all of that period 30's, 50's & 70's paraphernalia took a massive chomp out of the budget and they probably need to spend most of what remains on the final four episodes...but who cares when the character storytelling is this solid and the action is still fun!?
I certainly don't miss the days of awkward green-screen globe trotting and pretending LA is every city everywhere including LA like 4 times!

This was more than just your typical filler episode. This was all about characters and starting to feel a sense of finality to everything. Yeah the Enoch scene was a bit long, but it was absolutely worth it. Also what this episode did for Caulson and Daisy was the best kind of character development at this stage of the series, especially Caulson.

Gods, I'm so damn tired of Deke. He's such an idiot and an asshole. I really loathed how he barged into Mack's apartment the first time and insulted Mack's car modeling as a coping mechanism. Deke's heart was in the right place in trying to get Mack to get out of his grief, but Deke went about it in every possible wrong way.

But that wasn't even the worst part. Deke fell back into his old "steal things from the future and pretend he created them so everyone will love him." I fucking hated it when it happened the last time and I hated it even more this time.

It didn't help that the episode leaned a little too hard on all of the 80s tropes, especially the horror ones.

Overall, the episode had the basics of a touching episode but executed those idea very poorly.

That said, the episode had two great things about it: Coulson Headroom and the lovely little tribute to Ron Glass.

Next time: Ugh, Nathaniel survived? Really? Why? Fuck off.

I never watched the horror movies...so i assume the deaths really felt like an 80's movie? Yeah, they might have overdone it, but fun nonetheless. Really too bad Wonder Woman 1984 was delayed -- would have been a perfect place to air a commercial.

I am enjoying this season more than recent years. I guess I enjoy the whole time travel story but I was a bit unclear how much time really passed. Maybe I misheard, but I could have sworn when Deke knocked on the door he said it's 1993. I must have misheard because it made more sense that it was 1983.

This episode WAS good, and I DID enjoy it, but I feel like the script was more of a draft. With some tweaking, this could have been phenomenal. I would have liked to have seen Mack deal with his issues and see what was going on with his younger self rather than just have him stare into space. As he has been so personally affected by this timeline, will that kid grow up and join SHIELD? If not, what really happens when they get back to 2020? Will there be two Macks? The timeline is so different, what will really be the story?

I guess we will have to watch it all to find out... DId i read right that only 4 more episodes left????

Does someone have a list of the Auto correct spellings in this thread of Chronicoms? That has been entertaining for me! (But yes,i know who y'all were talking about)

So a couple of things of note... like @RJDiogenes i was a bit concerned about the age difference -- the added grey on Souza threw me off. But if MarvelWikia can be believed, He was born in 1918 and was plucked out of time at age 35. Daisy was born in 1988, and if it is 2020 then she is 32. So for that level, they are basically the same age. And culturally..since he admired Peggy Carter, i think he can still have a great relationship with Daisy.

And regarding @Reverend 's "relative" comment... Coulson has been like Daisy's dad on the show. And since he is an admirerer of Souza, I am pretty sure he approves... and that He and Souza have a similar vibe , i think that works out REAL well for Daisy (i think better than her real life boyfriend).

Of course i like the show -- i want it to be at its best, especially as it is wrapping up.there was the strong the potential of it not being relevent... but thankfully my fear was wrongly placed.

By the way, did anyone notice the repeat of the opening credits? Been loving their alternate opening title screens.

Oh, and I was very sad at Enoch's death... but i hope is NOT permanent. I would love to see the actor in 1) a role complete opposite of Enoch's personality and 2) as a Vulcan on Star Trek. He would be perfect.

I have zero problem with the Souza pairing (not that it's even a pairing at this point.) I mean he's basically the guy Ward was pretending to be and the man she was trying to turn Lincoln into, and he's doing it without either trying or really realising he's doing it at all. Whether he's at all interested in the romantic sense remains to be seen though.
Plus with only 4 episodes left and them having only met less than a week ago (subjectively) I can't see them playing this out significantly outside of a coda.

I don't really want to see him back mainly because there are only 4 episodes left in the series. The scene gave a nice sense of finality to the character and there are so many other things they need to wrap up.

Just out of curiosity, I looked up the actors ages and Chloe Bennet (Daisy) is 28 and Enver Gjokaj (Sousa) is 40, so there is a bit of an age difference, but it's not as bad as a lot of pairings.

I don't usually mind "filler" episodes, but when they are this close to the end, then I think it's best to use what little time they have left to really move the arcs and characters forward as much as possible in every episode.
I really enjoyed this one, they had a lot of fun with the loops, and we got some really good character development.
I already started to suspect they were setting up a Daisy/Sousa relationship, so it was nice to get some movement on that front. I think they're a good pair, so I have no problem with them going there.
They really had some fun with the time loops here, like when Daisy started predicting what everyone was going to do, and the stuff about Deke being dead after Enoch killed everyone. Elizabeth Henstridge really did a great job with this one, especially for her first directing gig. There was some really great cuts from scene to scene when we were getting some of the loop montages.
Enoch has been one of my favorite characters, so I was really sad to see him go. His death scene with Daisy and Coulson was amazing, one the best scenes of the season, if not the whole series.

I agree. Plus it would feel like dramatic cheating by robing that scene of it's power. It was a very sad moment that made me tear up. I wouldn't mind maybe though if they find away for Fitz to somehow say good bye to him somehow. Maybe a Data like goodbye in Picard where he is able to turn on his memories for a moment and say goodbye.

If you look at the chars Sousa would be around 36 or 37 and Daisy is listed as 1988 so just use whatever year you think it 'might' be in Shield lol. I think she'd be around 30 +/- a 1 or 2 years.

Agreed. As far as I'm concerned, there's no such thing as a filler episode.

In my case, it's more like "deliberately incorrect." I doubt if there's a list, especially since I did it last year, too. For the record, my favorite is "Kodachromes." :rommie:

That's not bad. I know several couples with an age difference in that range.
