Agents of Shield - Season 4

Probably why he was mentioned here. They wouldn't be bringing him up if he didn't have a part to play. Maybe not the ultimate leader, but threads like that aren't dropped in fiction without some intention to follow up.

Wasn't the "I knew your father" thing a bit auf a retcon anyway?
Shouldn't Radcliff know who he was when he infiltrated his little transhumanist club?

Right. They were dead and kept coming up again and again as Ward's past was explored and he dealt with his family issues.

Here, in one episode and for the first time in the series, they mention Fitz's dad out of the blue, go out of their way to have Radcliff talk about how he knew Fitz's dad, how and how Fitz's dad had talked to Radcliff about Fitz.

You don't spend your limited story telling time on something like that unless there is a reason to do so.

Of course Fitz's father will turn out to be someone. He must hate that these inhumans can do better than his little Fitzzie and want to rid the world of them. Earth For Earthlings!

I thought the Russian guy in the sub was the superior.

That would be a bit out of the blue. I mean prior to this episode has either of Fitz's parents even been mentioned before?

The Russian called himself 'the Superior Man' which is obviously designed to make people believe he's the 'superior', but the episode already went out of its way to say that he was working for someone himself (the Russian prime minister), so is he really the ultimate man in charge? And in terms of being out of the blue, he is, too. It all comes down to whether 'The Superior' is actually going to be a major villain or not, because right now this guy feels more like a lieutenant with not a lot of real connection to any other characters (although this Coulson vendetta could be the main point of his character, even though it seems really strange).

Just to be clear: I'm not say it's can't be Fitz's dad, just that it'd be a bit out of left field and not necessarily in a good way.

Side note: I'd be careful about reading too much into clues right now. The last two episodes have been riddled with LMD red herrings so they may still be playing misdirection games.

Well, mentioning Fitz's dad is almost sure to lead to his appearance in some capacity, yes. But that doesn't necessarily mean he'll be the Superior. After all, shows these days tend to have lots of developing subplots. Look at how Aida herself was set up throughout the first half-season even though it was focused on Ghost Rider. And didn't I read somewhere that this season is going to have a third arc after the LMD thing wraps up? Maybe this is laying pipe for that arc.

So we finally learned the secret of the Koenigs. They're identical... siblings. And they have a sister. And one of them is a non-conformist comedian. Or beat poet. I couldn't really tell. :rommie: And they seem to have a lot of autonomy. "Most of the time even we don't know where they are." The Labyrinth, or whatever they called it, was pretty cool.

The new Russian character is interesting. He seemed to gain some respect for Radcliffe when he learned that he built Aida-- enough so that he didn't mind Radcliffe giving him orders. Either that or he's biding his time and will keelhaul Radcliffe when the time comes.

Radcliffe is a puzzle. He really doesn't want to hurt anyone, to the point where he pretended to be a fellow prisoner to convince Koenig to talk-- and then took over the sub to prevent Koenig from being hurt (ironically killing one of the crew in the process). And we still don't know entirely what he wants.

I feel bad for Robo-May. As far as her perspective is concerned, she is May, except with some extra compulsions added by Radcliffe. Kind of a nightmare to suddenly realize you're a robotic copy programmed to betray your friends. And if she has the same feelings as Real May, then Real May has also been hiding romantic feelings for Coulson. And I wonder what Radcliffe meant by "You weren't built to last."

As for Fitz, it can't be just a random plot element that Robo-Radcliffe brought up his father. I have a feeling we'll be seeing the old man soon. It didn't occur to me that he might be the "Superior," but that does seem like a likely development.

Even the killings so far can't be put on Dr. Radcliffe. Aida is becoming a terror to Redshirts and seems ready to rebel the next time Dr Radcliffe tries to get her to back off. For a moment I thought we were going to have a second character with a high tech prosthetic.

I wonder if we see the side effects of the Hyde Super Soldier serum next week. As it stands now with booster shots it seems as effective as Captain Americas, watching a juice up Patriot/Director Mace when he stepped up to protect his team and plane, that is assuming Ghost Rider punches with actual physical power and not just a supernatural power felt by his target.

Plus, she's gotten a look on her face a few times when Radcliffe has criticized her that says Radcliffe himself may not be immune. After her exposure to the Darkhold, she may be able to reprogram herself.

She's a bomb(shell)! :)
This is what concerns me.

Simmons' parents were mentioned and they weren't brought out, as well as Ward's.
Oh, ah, true. Yeah, meet doesn't follow from Chekhov's gun. But have some bearing on the story probably does. The actual quote implies that each mentioned element be somehow necessary to the story. Of course, the maxim doesn't have to be followed at all.

In the case of Ward's father, Ward ended up murdering him. That probably follows Chekhov's gun as something necessary to Ward's tale. I don't remember anything about Jemma's parents, except that she was avoiding them.

Loved the return of the Koenigs! The wait was worth it, and LT was great. And it was totally inevitable that the RoboMay reveal would come immediately after her and Phil's first smooch. Too inevitable to even predict. But, on duty, guys? Really?

Some good bits c/o The AV Club's commenters:

I totally thought this, too.

Who knew!

... And for those like me with way too much time on their hands, I just discovered Afterbuzz, a YouTube channel that does episode discussions for AoS (as well as The Flash and several other shows) as long as the eps themselves, or even longer. Bonus points, the main AoS host is super charming and bubbly:

So is it just me or do you think the season will end with May's body dying but Shield will just download her mind from the framework into the Android version of her.

No, but I have a feeling Mace isn't going to make it out alive. Not that it matters, because I don't think the series is going to make it out alive.
