Agents of Shield - Season 4

OK, since when does asking if anyone else thought the half a second shot of a woman putting on her knickers was "a tad unnecessary" qualify as "getting in a tizzy over it"?
There've been a lot more comments about it than that. Somebody used the term "soft-core porn".

Ward show showed skin more than once. So did Triplett and Peterson if I recall correctly. That was for the female gaze to get all tingly in their Joy Department. No one objects to the objectification of the men. In my opinion, all Agents of Shield is guilty of is being a dramatic action adventure program in 2016.

Oh so you're just taking the most extreme objection and using it to characterise the entire argument? I stand corrected good sir.

OK, I've already had to explain the dictionary definition of "gratuitous" today, am I going to have to do the same thing for "context" as well? Because I feel like you don't understand what that means. Or for that matter the phrase "sense of proportion", "false equivalency" or "everyone else is doing it so it's totally cool and anyway, she was totally asking for it, I mean who dresses like that?"

Come on guys, this is not a difficult set of concepts to wrap your noodle around.

Yes, but you know very well that any recap, as thorough as it might be will never ever be complete. a recap is not a transcript. Details and nuances are lost. Details that are important to give context to any plot and character development.
Also AoS is a highly serialized show. And any episode recap will not take into account any further developments of the story.
You are basing your opinion deliberately on imcomplete information.
It is your choice to not watch it based on that, but can't possibly make a judgement on the actual content of the episode if you haven't seen it and expect to be taken serious here.

I was pretty sure I was going to skip the show once it was announced that Coulson was going to lose his job for no real reason and basically have to fight another person who claims to be the director of SHIELD over him. I barely got through the Gonzales story arc, and I didn't want to do that again. The recap just confirmed that, by showing that every terrible thing I thought could happen did happen.

But we don't know any of the reasons there is a new director yet. Or who he is. So, not sure how "every terrible thing you could think of" has happened.

Oh no, emphasizing a female character's feminity in the superhero genre? Please, no, anything but that! (But by all means, please keep showing ridiculously ripped men with greased torsos and bulging biceps at every turn. That's totes okay.)

Okay, that's a bit over-the-top.. Anybody who thinks that's "soft-core porn" needs to watch more cable TV . .... :)

Reading back through the thread, I'm not seeing where anyone even said that...

Methinks me smells a straw-man about to put his arguing hat on... :shifty:

Oh no, completely misrepresenting an argument my totally skewing the context beyond all recognition because the bad TV people make you look at man nipples that one time!

...wait, what are we arguing about again?

Daisy.. well, as nice as it looks i could have done without the softcore porn that the new 10pm timeslot allows.

I was just doing my 50th anniversary rewatch of "Where No Man Has Gone Before"...it wasn't Sally Kellermen's shirt that got ripped to shreds on Delta Vega.

Also from the same TV season...I made a remark in another thread about the dichotomy of getting a prime-time TV series with a man running around in a loin cloth (Tarzan), while the censors wouldn't let us see Barbara Eden's navel.

Oh so you're just taking the most extreme objection and using it to characterise the entire argument? I stand corrected good sir.

I'm here for casual conversation, not debate team.

You guys are bitching about a minute display of feminity in a fantasy genre show. I'm arguing that you guys are being ridiculous and hypocritical in doing so.

@Reverend -- I guess our disagreement lay in what we consider to be "gratuitous". I would consider what we saw last night to be a deliberate showing of sexuality to be sure, but far from gratuitous. At least in my opinion.

SHIELD coming in from the cold and being legit once more is the reason Coulson's been replaced.

Well, that and the Avengers still think he's dead. ;)

Cable TV is soft-core porn, it has replaced the R-rated sex comdies of the 80s. To get hard core you hit the internet sites. maybe not porn but certain gratuitous.

In other words, tell the audience what happened, instead of showing it. This is poor storytelling for the visual arts.

Man, I can't believe people still get this uptight over sexuality in the 21st century.

IIRC, they did a one-panel gag of that in the classic all-humor issue of What If?
Ah, I'm sure I had that issue, so it was probably in my subconscious. :rommie:
