Agents of SHIELD - Season 2 Discussion Threads. (Spoilers Likely)

Geez, what if Coulson has really been dead all along since Loki killed him?

On a completely seperate note: The actors from Avengers with on a talk show after SHIELD went off and they had a bunch of people calling in to ask questions, one of them was Clark Gregg asking if they would come on his show. The six of them kind of sat there until Chris Evans yelled "Sure!" and the others murmmered to some degree after. I realize that they are all "movie" actors and they are expensive, but could they work something out to have them appear on something? It would be really cool to have Cap show up on SHIELD.

Or, this spinoff in the works, I know I'm dreaming but bear with me please, could be an anthology show, kind of like the old one shots, but expanded to fill an episode or several. Like a 3 episode mini series starring Captain America, then a one episode featuring Iron Man, and a 4 parter with Hawkeye and so on. SHIELD people could cross over at times, or not. I wonder if Spider Man could even pop up. Does Sony have the TV rights to Spidey? What if he was one of the people they were looking to add to the index? And since he is basically a suit I don't think they would need to struggle to get the actor to appear. Do they even have a new Spider-Man actor?

i think it's a great idea, and would be greta, such that any breaks (due to a holiday special, president's address, etc.) wouldn't disrupt the flow too much of the show.

But as others mentioned, i think the cost factor would the problem. But i still love it!

Hunh. So this show is barely managing to get renewed, but they're making a spin-off and diluting the brand and taking characters from the main show? Weird.

That Agents of SHIELD is low-rated or struggling is a fallacy. Over-nights might not be so impressive, but over-night numbers don't mean what they used to.

After Hulu, DVR's and other streaming sources are taken into account, AoS ratings have always been respectable. See this article from TV by the Numbers regarding the recent ep, "Melinda".

According to Variety, Season one tied for the fifth most watched broadcast show of the season.

Last season, the show established a solid ratings base for ABC in live plus same-day numbers (averaging a 2.4 in adults 18-49 and 6.9 million viewers overall), but grew in the live plus seven measure once DVR viewers were factored in, jumping to a 4.0 demo rating and 10.4 million viewers, which helped it tie for fifth place among all broadcast series last year, behind only “The Big Bang Theory,” “Modern Family,” “The Blacklist” and “Grey’s Anatomy.”

The Cancellation Bear says it's' fine so it's probably fine.

I do find it funny that the departure of two characters that haven't even been around a full season is now 'diluting' the show somehow.

I do grant they are both two of the stronger current characters, though, in my opinion.

Sorry if this theory has already been floated, but couldn't Theta Protocol be more of a protective measure set in place by Coulson as a reaction after seeing how certain "powers" have been treated (ie. Sky and Mike)? This new base could be a place where individuals with powers could go to feel safe and secure, and if interested, could learn to use their gifts safely. I could see May's husband working with Coulson on this if the thought was that the individuals using the base weren't primarily being trained for fieldwork. Just an idea.

That's what I figure Theta Protocol is; essentially the Avengers Academy (or something similar) except with a different origin story. It ticks all the right boxes:

- Coulson saw his partner and best friend devastated from having to kill a powered child who was unable to handle her gifts, so he'd want to find a way to help those people.

- Coulson feels a sense of almost parental responsibility for Skye, and would like to mentor others like her with dangerous abilities.

- Coulson was in large part responsible for the assembly of the Avengers team, and would like to continue in that role, especially as new threats to humanity arise on Earth and from space.

- The Avengers are about the get their asses kicked for a large part of Age of Ultron and may suffer some losses or some might part ways, so this would be a natural followup to that as a means of replenishing their strength as needed or spreading the Avengers Initiative to teams in other regions.

- Coulson has directly involved May's husband in the project; a psychiatrist who specializes in treating people with gifts, and has firsthand experience in dealing with a spouse who suffered from an encounter with them.

- Fury's toolbox pulled up a series of what looked like personnel files, so I'm guessing it's a record of all the other gifted people they've encountered who show potential as agents or Avengers.

- Coulson feels some responsibility for all of this after his pursuit of the Kree city led to Skye's transformation and Trip's death.

So, essentially he's doing the same thing Skye's mother is, which is why we're getting the parallels that they both have some rigid rules and secrets that rub some people the wrong way but might have good reasons for being necessary in their minds. We might even see Skye's mom and Coulson team up later on once they realize they can trust each other and essentially want the same thing for the gifted people.

I just saw, "Melinda" last night. It's been bothering me, because I faintly remember a comic having a similar antagonist, where it was a gestalt with one mind and I swear if it touched you, you became a part of it. I also seem to remember a phrase said that was a clue someone was taken over by the gestalt. I just can't remember which comic it was in, but for some reason, I think it was DC or Wildstorm.

I'm hoping you guys can help!

Well, its not DC, but this sounds similar to what you're thinking about:

Phalanx (Marvel comics)

Lol, Cal was in Doctors Without Borders, who would have guessed? Wow. What a great guy.

Happy Cal is just the best.

Probably not, but Phalanx?

Next week's AOS "features an exclusive scene from Age Of Ultron".

The logical assumption is that it will involve an attack on Hydra in eastern Europe.

Ward was pretty cool towards the end of tonight's episode, and it looks like he's going into full awesome mode next week.

Loved the shot of Fitz with his hand trembling on his gun.

Looks like Bakshi isn't fully compliant. (Though you never know on a show like this.)

Nice ending. I guess Coulson realized he was in way over his head at this point in time, at least from the perspective of having too few assets at his disposal while trying to go up against Hydra. He knows he needs help.

I guess Coulson hasn't stopped looking for HYDRA after all this time, amidst the Real SHIELD threat. I thought getting Ward and Bakshi on his team was about outwitting Gonzalez and his crew.

Yeah, I felt like I lost part of the plot, with Coulson going after HYDRA instead of prioritizing getting SHIELD back.

I'm hoping that May is playing a deeper-cover game, because she's starting to come off as a Real SHIELD crony.

I find myself not caring about the Skye storyline and looking forward to the other threads.

For me, the Skye/Cal storyline was the most compelling, moving thing this show has ever done. I feel such sympathy for Cal, whose plight is really poignant. All he wants is to bring his family back together and take care of his daughter, and his joy at finally having them together was palpable, but he's a victim of what was done to him and what he did to himself, and he just can't help but be dangerous. It's all so sad, and Maclachlan plays it brilliantly. I was tearing up in every scene involving Cal, Skye, and/or Jiaying.

I really enjoyed the episode, another solid entry.
I did enjoy it when Skye mouthed her given name aloud: Daisy Johnson
It seems she's coming to terms with who she is and maybe will even at some point insist on being Daisy, if not Quake. The mists changed her, revealed to her who she was so perhaps she embraces her name as well.

For me more Deathlok is a good thing! If this spinoff with Bobbi/Mockingbird actually happens I hope either Deathlok becomes full time with Coulson or he's full time on the spinoff. Until more details are known I'm feeling the spinoff is about a year premature, but we'll see. Awaiting more info and they may not feel ready to mention that till well after Age of Ultron debuts.

The testing on Supers and mention of Von Strucker is hard to miss. It makes it more and more likely that Wanda and Pietro are going to be Inhumans for the film.

Next week hopefully has a few minor threads for AoU, but most certainly the week after does!!

Have they established Cal's power and/or origin yet? I noticed there were a series of mysterious green vials in his office drawer...

^In the episode where Cal assembled his own team of villains, he explained to them that he'd experimented with drugs/chemicals to enhance his abilities, which led to his emotional instability.
