Agents of SHIELD - Season 2 Discussion Threads. (Spoilers Likely)

Could theta protocol be somehow related to the creation of Ultron? If Fury/Stark/Banner, or some constellation thereof, are working on an advanced AI defense system and are making Coulson "run errands" for them it would explain him not being able to tell the others.

But then there are the bunk beds...

The hand-dryer gag was my favorite part of the episode. :rommie:

Well, not really, because May's story was incredibly heartbreaking and very well done. It's easy to see why she became so closed off.

In the present day, the SHIELD vs. SHIELD storyline has taken an interesting turn, with both May and Simmons becoming increasingly suspicious of Coulson's activities. Of course, either nuSHIELD is lying or Coulson has good reasons for what he's doing. At least he better. I have no interest in them pulling an Evil Coulson twist on us.

Or it could just be a disagreement. What's wrong with having a team of superpowered individuals? Obviously, Deathlok is an ally. The risk, however, is huge. I don't have a problem with people opposing it.

Thanks to whoever above mentioned that Raina is clairvoyant. My brain processed that she can see the future, but it totally neglected to make the simple leap to that word she was so fond of last season, clairvoyant.

You're welcome.

Whitehall is dead and done.
...Whitehall is dead...

Uhm, just how certain are we that Whitehall is dead and done? If Skye's mom is still alive, and he stole some of Skye's mom's powers, it's not too hard to make the jump to him still being alive.

Admittedly about 80% sure. At least for now anyway. Sure, they could bring him back but I doubt it'll be anytime soon.

If she got sliced up into a million pieces and survived, surely Whitehall can survive one measly bullet. (Wait, is that how he died? I forget.)

It may have been two or three rounds, but yeah, it's possible. On the other hand Skye's mum was able to heal herself (after Cal stitched her back together) because she's an Inhuman and has an innate ability. It seems likely to me that what Reinhart took from her was only good for that one rejuvenating shot.

Plus hey, maybe Cal can finally get his revenge. (Though you know it would be the opposite. If Whitehall comes back, he's going to be the one to kill Cal, and spoil the happy family reunion.)

That said, I'm not holding my breath for Whitehall to come back. From a narrative perspective, there's just no need to bring him back right now. We've got enough going on with the battle for Shield and the Inhumans. (Though he would be a logical foil for the Ward/33 pairing. It might be a fun scene to see Whitehall order 33 to kill Ward.) But from a powers-and-abilities perspective, there's every reason to think we could still see him at some point.

Indeed.

The simplest solution is usually the best, and someone upthread suggested that he may just be building a new prison for super powered people. While there's some logic there, the problem is that he's been hiding it from May and Simmons and everyone else. Even if what he's doing is not evil and there are good reasons behind it, the way he's doing it actually does kind of make him out to be a villain. Too much hiding, too many secrets. The fact that May had no clue he'd been working with Deathlok and had no idea what Theta Protocol was is a bad sign.

I have a feeling they're going to blame the Avengers, and have Stark or Fury or Maria Hill be the one who told Coulson to do this job in secret, but that's still a cop out.

Just as I type this, I wonder of Theta Protocol, or some of Coulson's mysterious journeys and meetings, have anything to do with all the Agent Koenig's. He's been absent lately, maybe a bit too absent if you know what I mean. Maybe the cots are for new bases and safehouses since so many of the old ones were compromised.

I did wander if Avengers, inc. had anything to do with this. Of course it sidesteps the whole "they still think Coulson is dead" conceit (which they're keeping up why exactly?) unless of course Hill is doing this without actually telling Tony it's Coulson who's been helping them.

Whatever the "Theta Protocol" is it sounds like some sort of contingency, as opposed to an ongoing project or an operation in progress.
A contingency that requires 200 bunk beds can only be one of a few things. A prison was the first thing that came to mind, but a shelter/bunker would also work. Disaster response perhaps? I imagine a lot of people got caught in the crossfire during the incidents in Midtown, Harlem, Greenwich and when the Triskellion went up in flames. Maybe they're refitting the hellicarrier as a hospital ship/evacuation platform? Something to get a whole lot of civilians clear of a disaster area in a hurry?

On the other hand, if it was an Avengers thing then surely Stark would be picking up the cheque, no?

Seems more likely that is something he's doing with Fury IMO.

I do hope Reinhardt comes back. Reed Diamond is just delightfully menacing, whether he's playing slightly-campy-WW2-Nazi!Reinhardt, or modern-day-corporate-board-member!Reinhardt.

That's the only reason I'd like to see Whitehall back. I don't mind at all that Coulson killed him, but Reed Diamond is really good in the role. Maybe he might show up again in some flashbacks or on another season of Agent Carter.

The best speculation I've heard so far...
...is that this is a setup for the recently-announced spinoff ABC is developing, and that it will be an Avengers Academy-type show.

I'm kind of wondering if it isn't building a back up base in case they lose The Playground.

Coulson was pretty concerned when there was a possibility of Hunter blabbing about where they live to Talbot.

I think it would make sense that this "Theta Protocol" thing links to the upcoming Age of Ultron crossover episode(s). Newly-minted DIrector Coulson starting right off with seeking the aid of the Avengers is logical given the fall of S.H.I.E.L.D. And doing it in secret to protect the reconstituted S.H.I.E.L.D. from HYDRA. Though consulting with the Avengers would detract from his (re-)recruitment drive.

Also, guys, a new Avengers: Age of Ultron spot is out, and it shows
War Machine defending Helicarrier 64. Maybe the U.S. military seized 64 following the HYDRA revelation and have been maintaining it this whole time.

Argh! I'm gonna be at Disney then. There's no way I'm going to make it till I get home without being horribly, horribly spoiled.

For the record, I came across a copy of Marvel's Avengers: Age of Ultron Prelude, a short comic written to tie-in with AoU telling us a little about the origins of Baron von Strucker and the twins. According to this comic, the Project Insight hellicarrier aboard which Cap fought the Winter Soldier was named Charlie.

I suppose this means the other two were Alpha and Bravo?

I knew right from the start that the little girl was going to be a bad guy or involved with them somehow.
I knew she'd be important; I didn't guess she'd be the Big Bad.

Somebody on another board mentioned that, when they were in the Kree temple, that he told May to execute the Theta Protocol if he didn't come back. So perhaps he's not keeping as many secrets as we think. And hopefully he's got good reasons for keeping what secrets he does. And maybe nuSHIELD is lying or exaggerating.

No, there's nothing wrong with that. I just don't want them pulling some Grant Ward twist with Coulson himself. I'd be fine with an Avengers Academy or School for Gifted Inhumans or whatever.

Geez, what if Coulson has really been dead all along since Loki killed him?

On a completely seperate note: The actors from Avengers with on a talk show after SHIELD went off and they had a bunch of people calling in to ask questions, one of them was Clark Gregg asking if they would come on his show. The six of them kind of sat there until Chris Evans yelled "Sure!" and the others murmmered to some degree after. I realize that they are all "movie" actors and they are expensive, but could they work something out to have them appear on something? It would be really cool to have Cap show up on SHIELD.

Or, this spinoff in the works, I know I'm dreaming but bear with me please, could be an anthology show, kind of like the old one shots, but expanded to fill an episode or several. Like a 3 episode mini series starring Captain America, then a one episode featuring Iron Man, and a 4 parter with Hawkeye and so on. SHIELD people could cross over at times, or not. I wonder if Spider Man could even pop up. Does Sony have the TV rights to Spidey? What if he was one of the people they were looking to add to the index? And since he is basically a suit I don't think they would need to struggle to get the actor to appear. Do they even have a new Spider-Man actor?

Samuel L. Jackson's a "movie actor," and he's been on the show twice.

Me, I'm kinda hoping that at least someone from the TV cast will have a cameo in Age of Ultron. I read something a while back about a secret actress cameo in the movie, and I'm hoping it's Ming-Na Wen or Adrienne Palicki.

Not yet.

In the Kimmel segment, Ruffalo and RDJ both turn around to look at Evans before he says anything...Renner also glances in his direction a the same time...a hint?

^^ That would be cool. Cap would be my first choice. And I just found out he's a local guy, too.

Yikes. I certainly hope not.

A little more enthusiasm for their colleague would have been nice. :rommie:

That's a cool idea, but I'm sure it wouldn't happen with the big names. But there are lots of other characters that they could use in that format.
