Agents of SHIELD. Season 1 Discussion Thread

My daughter is a big Firefly fan - I wasn't really watching shows during its run - and she was totally convinced that the show is Firefly.

She spent the hour comparing each cast member and pointing out that the "Bus" was Serenity and the lab was equal to the medical bay.
An interesting observation.

Coulson=Mal
May=Walsh & River
Grant=Simon & Jane
Skye=Kaylee

Fitz & Simmons do not equate to Book but I can see at least where she's going with that analogy.

If the show is going to stabilize it's viewers then the next episode or two should bear that out cause you can't have nearly 30% drops and stay on air.

For second episodes, yeah, it was expected. Most articles I read said something to that effect. I'm just adding that it should stabilize over the next few cause those type drops will not be expected, or I suspect tolerated, going forward.

If you want you can cram any show into Shield and compare it.

Shield ain't Firefly and vice versa. Both shows are very different in tone, cast and direction so a comparison can only be drawn if someone wants to look for it and has to have it.

The characters also don't even match at all, there are no important similarities other than a few shared skill sets like the combat prowess of Melinda May/Zoe and Big Hunk (can't even remember his name)/Jayne.

How about:

Coulson = Adama
May = Roslin
Ward = Apollo
Skye = Starbuck

Or maybe switch the last two around....

If you have to draw traits from two different characters on one show to compare to one character on another show, I'd call that proof that there is no legitimate analogy.

And "Coulson=Mal" is ridiculous. The only thing they have in common is that they're the respective leaders. In ideology and temperament they're total opposites. The only character who bears any resemblance to Mal is Skye, because she holds similar anti-authority views and is similarly at odds with the law.

Pretty much all the comparisons are ridiculous, really. It only proves that Browncoats miss the show so much that they're desperately looking for traces of it in Whedon's newer work. But if Whedon were a one-trick pony, he never would've created Firefly to begin with.

That's about the extent of it for me and only because the layout is (roughly) similar, the loading ramp, etc. There's also a Kaylee-ee vibe from the female "twin." But I think drawing any other connection is stretching things a bit. (Though them calling the plane a "bus" is similar to how the crew called Serenity their "boat.")

From Simmons? I don't see that. She's rather more upper-class than Kaylee. I guess they're both techies, but that's tenuous.

Except that by analogy with naval terminology, "boat" might be a correct term for a craft of that size. Although the fact that it has smaller support craft onboard (the shuttles) would qualify it as a ship, but it's reasonably close. "Bus" is rather more figurative.

It's more the perky, smiley, cherry vibe she gives of and, yeah, some of the techie-glee she gives off. It's slight but there, I feel.

How about:
Coulson = Gomez
Melinda = Morticia
Ward = Pugsley
Skye = Wednesday
Fitz = Cousin It
Simmons = Thing
The Plane = Lurch
Lola = Fester

I haven't gotten any Firefly vibes from these characters, but from other Whedon properties, Skye feels like Faith, and to a lesser extent, I get an Angel vibe from both May and Ward(but for different reasons) and a Willow vibe from Simmons.

That's the best theory I've heard yet.

Bit of a long shot (and I'm no expert in Marvel comic mythos) but isn't the guy who gave that sceptre to Loki supposed to be the master of death or some such? You know, the sceptre Coulson was stabbed with? The one last seen in SHIELD's (Romanoff's) hands?

Just saying maybe there's a connection there.

That would be Thanos, yes. Interesting thought, although I suspect that they're going to save any big Thanos-related revelations for the movies . . ..
A tie-in with Thanos seems like a strong possibility, considering what's supposed to be coming up in the movies.
