Re: Anyone Else Wanting the "Rebooted" Borg?

I think that, with this reboot, it could be a really good time to explain how the Borg actually came into existence. Additionally, there has been enough Trek cannon to justify finding them in Kirk's time. There have been many theories out there that the first Trek movie actually introduced the origin of the Borg. Maybe this new universe can create them and make them the scary, fear illicit force they were before the Trek movies introduced a queen?

I like the idea of a Borg reboot.

Re: Anyone Else Wanting the "Rebooted" Borg?

It seems to me those saying no are doing so because their mind is seeing repeats of Voyager. But this is a new timeline. They could be made insectoids if Abrams really wanted to. It is a clean slate so to speak.

Then why make them Borg at all? Just make them something new.

Then perhaps my OP should be a bit clarified. Maybe a species in the spirit of the Borg could be brought in. A powerful, cold, and malovelent enemy that will stop at nothing to "end" humanity, by assimilation or another means.

Re: Anyone Else Wanting the "Rebooted" Borg?

Besides, Kirk'll just pull a "Landru" on the Borg and the movie will be over in six minutes.

Yes. He will bust out some Nomad skills and the whole collective will collapse. Kirk is a master with the machine intelligence.

Again, please, God, no Borg.

Re: Anyone Else Wanting the "Rebooted" Borg?

NO BORG. Its been done to death (literally). They worked well for TNG, but that was it. If someone wants Borg, they can watch VOY. The movies that follow need to keep with what has worked with this one. Keep it fun.

Re: Anyone Else Wanting the "Rebooted" Borg?

I don't know the history of the Borg (although I guess they were trying to contact their people in the past in First Contact) but it seems to me that there is potential in a first contact story with a "not-as-highly-evolved" Borg.

That said, I'm not a fan of these story ideas people are throwing around: a new Khan story, a new Doomsday Machine story, a new Harry Mudd story . . .

At least, not for the films. ;)

Maybe a new V'Ger story.

The V'Ger theory kind of got debunked when VOY stated that the Borg have been around for 800+ years.

Again, that relies on the faulty premise that this movie belongs to the same universe/timeline. It doesn't. A radically redesigned Borg, keeping the malovolence and intimidation there, would not be redoing the Borg you think of. Again, Klingons, Cardassians, Andorians, and Romulans all exist in this new timeline, and they've had more stories than the Borg in the other one. So why aren't those considered rehashing while a radically redesigned Borg would be?

Re: Anyone Else Wanting the "Rebooted" Borg?

NO BORG!!

It's too soon after they've been exploited to death by Berman and Braga

Oh, I remember. Being a Voyager buff myself... but it is one theory out there that could now be plausible since this tmeline is different. Who knows what the ripples caused and shook up?

I, for one, don't want any of those to be the focus of the next movie either. Individual members of those species in the background as set decorations, fine. I want something NEW. Otherwise, what was the point of wiping the slate clean?

Re: Anyone Else Wanting the "Rebooted" Borg?

A friend made this comment shortly after we went to see the new film. My response was an intense "no", because perhaps the greatest sense that I had after seeing the premier was that the next film needs to be an entirely new story that stands on its own two feet.

That doesn't, of course, mean that there shouldn't be elements that are already part of Trek lore, of course. If Klingons and Romulans have a right to be in it, the Borg do too. But this reboot is about making Trek new and fresh again, and I have no urge to see them consciously try and one-up First Contact or TWoK. We need to keep going in new directions, a Borg movie would be a step back.

Re: Anyone Else Wanting the "Rebooted" Borg?

I've considered for some time that Berman and Braga missed a huge trick with the TNG movies by not bringing back the aliens from the TNG episode Conspiracy.

The could be introduced subtly in to the Nu-Trek time line, which perhaps gives options for a continuing story arc over a couple of sequels.

Re: Anyone Else Wanting the "Rebooted" Borg?

No ... wrong time and just couldnt see it working. No point in a reboot if it just does the same thing again. I would like to see more about the other federation planets etc.. and not just threats to Earth....

Even though it isnt Canon, the DC Fontana scritped (least I think it was) game Star Trek Legacy had the borgs origins as V'Ger, the original probe got sucked into a - you guessed it - Black hole! and - you guessed it - went back in time, to some advanced machine race who sent it out to learn all it could, only when it did learn all it could, it needed greater capacity to store that or some such, and started using more human hosts against their will, and eventually became the Borg.

I Think.

Re: Anyone Else Wanting the "Rebooted" Borg?

No. No Borg, no Khan, no Doomsday Machine, no Q...what is the bloody point of wiping the slate clean if we're just going to re-hash things that have already been done?
Actually, I wouldn't mind seeing the planet killer in the next movie... think of all the sh!t they could blow up. :D
