A question to those that dislike this new movie

I am curious, please allow me, for those that dislike this movie, would you have rather it was never made in the first place?

The reason I ask is that this movie has generated an excitement that hasn't been seen in this franchise of Star Trek in a very long time. An excitement and media coverage that has expanded around the globe and has brought a lot of people into Star Trek whom may have not liked it or been into it before.

I've seen Star Trek all over the media this past week, print, online, TV, radio, it is everywhere. There is a buzz, there is excitement, there is talk about this great franchise. I even saw some marathons on TV, along with some Star Trek specials. The History channel even aired a special yesterday called: "Star Trek: Beyond the Final Frontier"

So, I'll ask, would you have rather not have had this movie be here now creating all this buzz and interest in the franchise? Are you against bringing in new people to the franchise and getting them interested?

It seems this movie has really been positive for the franchise of Star Trek, it has renewed interest in it, even with people that may not have gotten into it before.

So would you really rather none of this have happened?

of course not...

I can hardly wait until the rental DVD is released. I'd really like to see the movie.

Just a guess, but I think they would like for it to have happened but according to their expectations and specifications.

I think that's the difficulty in making a movie like this: you can't please everyone; you're gonna piss off someone; so you might as well do the best you can and hope for the best.

the only things i disliked about the movie were logical things...

like why in the world was the enterprise built in Iowa and why did all of these recruits go to iowa for the trip to san francisco?

and

why is engineering so vastly different from anything we've seen before?

i just dont understand those two things...

I don't understand. Are the only options

a) badly written movie

b) no movie ?

Isn't that setting the bar for Star Trek pretty low?

Anyhow, I hope that there are sequels and that they are WAY better.

My point is, some people make it sound like they would have rather this movie never come out. Perhaps they don't realize the affect it has had on the franchise, renewing it, bringing it to the forefront, it is all over the media, people are getting interested in it once again, it is bringing in new fans. Just the fact it exists, and has succeeded, is great for the franchise, it has been a while since I've heard so much buzz over a Star Trek movie!

I think that's fair. It is a bit of a binary question, like, "So, do you hate freedom or support us? Your call."

And based on two posts I read here on TrekBBS, there are people who want Paramount, CBS and PocketBooks to end all ties with previous Trek and concintrate all efforts on projects based only on just this new Trek.

Let's see what happens when all of the "Cheerleaders" and "Fanboys" find a new project next month. And sanity returns to the Trek Universe.

You bet there are "fairweather fans," those who just came out to this movie because it's a good movie. These people will also see the next movie, as long as it's good too. What they do in the meantime is not very important.

I don't think hardcore Transformers fans care about what everyone else does in between Transformers movies.

The oldTrek books will continue, I'm sure of it. However, a new series set in the Star Trek universe does sound very good. Pocket Books, take note! :D

I didn't like the movie. My problems with it are due to writing and not anything like breaking "canon" or recasting. I personally disliked some key parts of the recast (specifically Spock) but in theory they could have still made a good movie, and still can.

The sequel will hopefully be better, and if it is I will welcome it with open arms. I went and saw all the Star Wars prequels even though I hated every one of em because I was hoping the entire time that the next one would be better.

If making this movie is the price to pay to reinvigorate the franchise then I welcome it even if I thought it was a bad movie. I don't particularly care for the production design, I don't agree with some of the character decisions, but this is one movie out of a potential 20+ more years of storytelling, and hopefully at least some of that is to my taste.

They have and will... They like money,

Plus I can read a new series of Trek books. And by mainly reading only nuTrek, maybe I can keep up.

I liked the movie, and to answer your question... possibly I wish this movie was never made.

I enjoyed the 24th century and history that Star Trek already had. Personally, I think a lot rides on the next movie. People excused the plot in this movie because it was cooler, the special effects were amazing, the pace was action/adventure and good. Will the next movie just be dumbed down plot for action again? Or will the spirit of Trek, and "SCIENCE" fiction return?

Basically, just because this movie was pretty good, DOES NOT mean that Trek is headed in the right direction for the long term. One can hope so. But only time will tell.

I'm certainly concerned that if future movies don't deliver with more story, that rating will immediately lower, and then what..? We have two different Trek universes? That makes it a lot harder to pick back up.

And in an alternate reality, what if this movie was never made, Star Trek rested another decade, and then a badass movie set in the 27th century in the established timeline came out.. that spawned future series and films??

Just way too hard to say if it was good this movie was made only 3 days after its premiered.

The oldTrek books will continue, I'm sure of it.

Agreed, at least as far as the 24th century goes. They've spent a lot of time setting up this Typhon Pact, and dammit, they're gonna use it!:)

While I'm not happy with this movie, I'll be happy if its success spawns new Star Trek material in the "prime" universe as well, like direct to video movies starring characters from the 24th century shows. I've also heard of the possibility of Of Gods & Men getting an official Paramount DVD release.

I guess given those two options I'd rather the film was made, better some Trek than none at all.

I'd really rather have just had a film where Vulcan wasn't distroyed and the timeline continued as normal.

I would have rather they didn't blow up Vulcan (for the most part).

I haven't seen it, but I'm hoping for the best. That being said, on the off chance that it sucks, are you saying that I should just be happy that new Star Trek is being made regardless of the quality, just as long as it's "popular?" I'm not really looking for mainstream validation for my Star Trek fandom. An ideal sitation would be to have a good movie that's also successful. Like a Star Trek IV type situation. Great movie, very commercially successful, didn't compromise or dumb itself down to appeal to a mass audience. That's what I'm hoping for here(fingers crossed.) If I think it sucks, I'm not going to swing from JJ Abrams's balls and be like "Oh, thank you, JJ, for bringing back Star Trek! Even if it's a turd, at least no one will think I'm a nerd for liking Star Trek because everyone that used to make fun of me loves this movie now!"
