A "lady of the night" asked me out

No word from her yet, guys.
Perhaps she's been too busy with law school?

Actually a lot[\b] of them are college students who really want the extra money. Some of them are really focused and career-minded, if they more or less love the job then I really like how they're empowering themselves.

I dunno, there's plenty of other jobs to get to work through college that pay well, and usually pay more for attractive women. Stripping, Hooters waitresses, among other things.

I don't think selling your body and risking getting any number of diseases (not to mention the social stigma) is a good way to do it.

Now, don't get me wrong, I've no problems with prostitution and think it should be legal. (But very, very highly regulated to ensure the health of both the service provider and the customers) but right now unless you live in Nevada, or whatever other states/areas have it legalized) I think you take a lot of risks when it comes to sleeping with a prostitute.

There are just far too many unknowns.

And all of that said, were it legal I'm not sure I could be in a relationship with one because it'd just be too upsetting for me to think that this woman I'm with slept with several other, strange, men during the day. At the very least I'd think that'd reduce the enjoyment of the activity for her and "work fatigue" would mean she'd just not be in the mood for it at home.

Just MHO, I couldn't have a relationship with a woman in the sex-trade even if it was legal. An exotic dancer? That's not as big of deal since it doesn't involve anything physical.

But the intimacy of intercourse would make a relationship with a prostitute too uncomfortable, be a load on my already stress and anxiety addled mind and put an extra layer of worry (even in the most safe of conditions I suspect STDs are still possible) on me.

Sure, these women are deserving of love and relationships too and certainly there are men out there who could see through the woman's job and have a relationship with her. I'm just not one of them.

Real life, grittier My Fair Lady sagas and mini pop music librettos. Almost every time I visit, it's brought home how much good stuff I've missed in not joining the carousel much, much earlier. Schmuck!!!! :)

Good to know all that stuff about Trekkies being nerds with immature attitudes towards sex isn't just unfair stereotyping!

Jeez, take a chill pill.

It might have been an un-gentlemanlike comment but the core statement is correct.

Could any one of you push the knowledge away that when she comes home from work she has slept with several men? And could you, if you're horny, then have sex with her (provided she's in the mood at all after having sex all day)?

That's the problem i see.. she could be a stripper (i understand that in most establishments touching the stripper is a big no), Dominatrix (as far as i know Sex and anything coming close to it like blowjobs is also not the norm) or clean houses half naked and it wouldn't be that big of a problem but having actual sex is just crossing a border.

If he can deal with it then he has my respect.. that takes true commitment and an openness that i lack. But, once again, there should be an understanding before the relationship progresses any further as to where they stand on the issue. Nobody will be happy if he "accepts" it officially as her job but is dying inside a little each time she leaves for work or if she assumes he's ok with it because he didn't tell her he isn't for fear of losing her.

That can only lead to desaster down the road.

are these issues relating to her job about the risk factor or just a general "ick" factor? Because if it's the latter, I've always found it sort of amusing that people don't think it's degrading to clean toilets or bedpans or perform in mascot costumes for money, but somehow to exchange SEX, pretty much among the most natural activities on Earth for money is beyond the pale.

I mean, if it's the risk factor regarding disease and stuff, that's one thing, but I'd be more ashamed to date someone who worked for a payday loan company or telemarketer than was a sex worker.

I think you didn't understand what i meant or i wasn't clear.

For me it's about the intimacy. If i'm in a relationship with a woman i am her only partner and she can be sure i won't sleep with other women.

I couldn't handle the fact that when she returns from work she has slept with other men, no matter if it happened in safe and "clean" way with condoms and such but the fact alone that another man had sex with her is simply a dealbreaker for me. I don't know if that is considered prudish, conservative or whatever name you may have but it is like it is for me.

I wouldn't have problems if she was an ex-prostitute and she's healthy or if she's a stripper or anything related to the sex industry so long as she has no intimate contact with other people.

For me it's a two way street.. i don't have sex with someone else so i expect her to not have sex with anyone but me.

This is what i wanted OP to think about.. can he handle the fact that she is having sex outside the relationship (doesn't even have to be the issue that she is a prostitute, she may want an open relationship for that matter). If he is lying to himself to keep her he will only hurt himself and sooner or later her too when he can't keep it back and neither would have to be in this situation if they talked about it before getting serious.

Well, I'm obviously no expert on this, but I can only repeat what I said earlier: With sex workers or porn actors, the sex would not seem to be particularly intimate. It's work. Done solely for money or film. I would not call that intimate. It's not done for love, just for a job. They may not even enjoy it at all.

I mean, if your SO was an actress, would you have a problem with her kissing another person in a film? No? Then why this? Yes, I know sex is a much greater degree than kissing, but I see the basic principle as the same. What's done onscreen is just work. Actors (porn or otherwise) don't love their costars, and sex workers don't love their johns.

Indeed, you could look at it as a badge of honor, so to speak...sure, dating a porn actor or sex worker might seem weird, having them do all those things, but at the end of the day, they still come home to you. After all that, they want love and affection (and they certainly deserve those things as much as any of us do), and you are the only one who they trust to give them that. Why not look at it that way?

Ah, I see what you were getting at.
