A defence of Kirk's 'Why are you talking to me, man?'

I laughed to myself thinking about this the other day. I was watching "Where No Man Has Gone Before" and Gary Mitchell says "man" in a fairly similar manner... its been around a while.

There are MUCH worse lines in Trek...such as referring to Shakespeare "in the original Klingon" and "Only Nixon could go to China".

Now THAT'S some mofo embarrassment there. This line? Not even close.

I think the more sane people who are nervous about that is that....well, Orci and Kurtzman's writing isn't exactly the most impressive.

You guys have seen Transformers, right? Noble alien leader of the Autobots says, 'my bad'? Believable, right?

That whole "hiding the giant robots from my parents" scene was hilarious. The disparity was what made the line funny.

Same thing here, but to a different effect. We're used to a mature Kirk, a captain who always needs to seem professional as a representative of the Federation. Now we're seeing him back when he was a drunk teenager. If it's not slightly jarring, the writers have failed.

I can understand people being concerned about these writers suitability for Star Trek. But seeing the use of a colloquialism by a youth as any sort of substantiation for that concern? That's just desperately trying to justify a pre-decided dislike of the movie.

In fact, online complaints have led to the ADR replacement of Kirk's line in post.

The line will now be delivereded as "Why are you talking to me, Herbert?"

It was hoped that this substitution would satisfy the fans.

Unfortunately, in doing so the producers tripped over a bit of continuity in "The Way To Eden" where Spock has to explain the meaning of the word to Kirk.

Since the news of this naked assault on canon has leaked out, four new anti-Abrams petitions have been launched online: three calling for total excision of the scene and one demanding that Bruce Greenwood be digitally replaced by CG'd file footage of Heath Ledger's audition tape for "The Dark Knight."

Their writing is very impressive.

Don't have any issues with the line, but I wouldn't go that far.

Uhura: “I’m impressed, for a moment I thought you were just a dumb hick who only has sex with farm animals.” Kirk: “not only.”

The above is clumsy in that Uhura's line is obviously structured to lead in to Kirk's response rather than being something someone would actually say. It also seems unnecessarily crass, although it's possible that could be justified in context.

I have not seen Transformers and have no plans to do so (though neither am I ruling it out.) There are at least a couple of generations who have grown up with Transformers toys and Transformers on TV, but those generations are not mine.

As I explained here, however, I am not the least bit bothered about this particular line; I think it's entirely appropriate to the situation in which it is spoken. Whether or not I am sane is a matter for another discussion.

Maybe the whiners are hoping they'll change the line to: "I am currently inebriated and lack the proper coherence to converse with you in a social and respectful manner."

The line is now "Frak off you frakking motherfrakker!" They know the sci-fi nerd LOVES the "futuristic" fake swearing.

I cannot for the life of me understand why people can judge a movie on the strength of a second and a half of dialogue seen out of sequence and context.

I'm sick of it actually - this forum is full of halfwits who seemingly only wish to agitate about something they've not seen.

The word 'man' has raped my childhood.

Yeah right - you fucking asked for it - watch it and then complain.
This guy is my new hero. I salute you, sir.

I would, and did.

THIS! IS! THE INTERNET! Of course people are going to bash a movie based on a few seconds of dialouge, what did you expect people to do form a mutual appreciation society.

Yeah....I didn't think the writing in Transformers was very good... and that's a whole MOVIE'S worth of work to base my opinion on.

Not just one line.

They just make me nervous for their ability to write a satisfying script.

As for the people who say...wait to watch the movie before complaining....

I offer this rejoinder....wait before you watch the movie before you're ready to start high-fiving everyone.

People who have objections to what's going on are not just idiots to look down on or pathetic myopic fools. Some of them are well-reasoned and logical.

Just as I'm sure you feel that defending this as yet unseen film to the death is well-reasoned and logical.

I agree on Transformers... but they also wrote Mission Impossible III, and I rather liked that one. Until this movie proves me wrong, I'm gonna chalk up Transformers to two words - Michael Bay.

Wait. So some are making an issue out of Kirk saying "man"? Seriously?

Then I guess I must have dreamed that scene in WNMHGB where Gary Mitchell says, "Hey, man, I remember you back at the Academy..."

Um, no.

See I happen to be a Star Trek fan. I am excited about there being a
Star Trek movie coming out, it looks cool and there hasn't been a Trek
to dissapoint me yet, hence I am a fan.

I have yet to see any well-reasoned logic in the arguments against the film.
A bunch of whining and nitpicking yes. I don't see how one could criticize
people for being excited about a new Star Trek movie as... Star Trek fans.

I can see how naysayers who claim to be Star Trek fans are criticized...
even non-Trek fans I know who have heard about some of the things "fans"
are saying think it's illogical... "Aren't they Star Trek fans?".

Well I am, so I will be excited for and think this film looks great.
Because it's kind of normal and logical to not be depressed or pissed
off about a movie of my favorite franchise being made.
And will continue to find it utterly illogical that people could already have
judged it "bad" or be "scared" about it.

Let's see if I can boil at least my thoughts down:

Do I.....

Enjoy the work of JJ Abrams? Nope.
Enjoy the work of Orci/Kurtzman? Nope.

Which means I'm a little nervous about what they do with my favorite sci-fi series.
