Probably a brilliant episode for a lot of younger viewers, but I found it a tad too silly and arbitrary.
Moffat's tenure in a nutshell, really.
There's a lot of stuff I liked this week, but I just can't get past the layers and
layers of stupid that have become part of the show since RTD left. I mean, a robot Amy piloted by hundreds of tiny assassins? The entire cast mugging for the camera as a car drives them down? In a crop circle? The.
FUCK? The show feels like a cartoon, like it should be animated in Flash or something, not starring real actors and filmed on location. And I
liked JesusDoc from Last of the Time Lords, FFS.
That said, Mel's regeneration scene was brilliant, and I loved the new, dangerous River/Melody. She never seemed entirely trustworthy, even back in the Library two-parter, so it was nice to finally have that out in the open and confirmed. Oh, and Moffat is the king of amazing and witty montages. It was nice to see more of young Amy's life.
So...I can't really say this was bad, but I didn't love it. And, truthfully, I'd toss everything Moffat/Smith into the ocean if it meant one more season – one more episode, even – of Davies/Tennant.
