There's a lot of good/interesting stuff in this ep but also some dubious and seemingly nonsensical choices. Not sure why such a big thing was made of the Doc's death. That and the save seemed very contrived, as (initially anyway) did River's sacrifice. Probably a brilliant episode for a lot of younger viewers, but I found it a tad too silly and arbitrary. Maybe I need to rewatch.

Well the Doctor has already regenerated because of poison (5th to 6th) and from memory he said it felt different.

Though can't say I was that suprised by the revelation in it.

But surely the answer to the question, is 42. :P

Well, it answered quite a few questions for me, which is a step forward.

Too many deaths/near-deaths of main characters though. It just kills the drama. But as an enjoyable episode, that aside, it worked.

Another massive disappointment. That's the 4th episode this series where the setting has been essentially irrelevent to the story Moffat is telling, the Hitler stuff in particular fell horribly flat. To be fair if you interested in the ongoing story then there is lots to enjoy but I really don't care whats going on and just want it over. Also Matt Smith wasn't as engaging as usual though that could be because he was stuck with this weeks - oh no someone is dying scenes.

On the positive Amy is inching towards not being the worst companion in the history of the show and Alex Kingston was a lot of fun to watch. Plus the next few episodes sound good so hoping for better to come.

well that is the last time I bother to even speak to my sister (and friend) before an episode, they were already slagging it off.

Needless to say having watched the episode, it was AWESOME, just AWESOME.

ok the show is over using the Doctor is dying stuff, but wow I never expected this episode to answer quite so many questions as it did, ok its given us some new ones, but this feels it was more answers than questions.

I like the idea of the tessaract, I really did. That said I used to hear the Numbskulls comic strip, even if it was just there to help the plot along a bit, and also the people inside were kinda dumb coming back too early in Hitlers timeline.

i honestly have no desire to even download this episode or watch it on iplayer. rest in peace doctor who.

So... the unknown question. If it is hidden in plain sight, then surely it is...

"Doctor Who?"

In other words, what is the Doctor's real name? And the Silence believe that Silence will fall when that question is asked.

But we know that question will be asked, because we know that River knows the answer, because she whispered it in the Doctor's ear in the Library. So presumably, that is when Silence Will Fall.

Following Melody/River's timeline...

* She's born just before "A Good Man Goes to War."
* She's kidnapped by Kovarian in "A Good Man Goes to War."
* She's taken to America in the 1960s, where she's raised by the Silence in the creepy orphanage, until she escapes, in "Day of the Moon."
* She somehow makes her way to New York, where she regenerates in 1969, presumably into Mels.
* Mels somehow makes her way to England, where she finds and befriends Amelia Pond. And yet somehow she is still only a child in the 80s, even though she specifically said the last time she regenerated was in New York. So either there are more regenerations in there, or she did that "making herself younger" trick she talked about.
* Mels meets the Doctor in 2011, goes with him to Berlin in 1938, where she regenerates into River.
* She kills and then saves the Doctor, and begins her strange relationship with him (from her POV).

Then there's all the various adventures we've already seen her on, in Gallifrey knows what order. Until finally...

* She dies in the Library.

Yes?

.

That was fun - I like that River better than the normal River... by which I mean, really, I'd do her.

As would I!

I've read enough comments here to really have me psyched for tonight, but I don't want to know everything, so I'll stop reading for now.

Four hours to go for the BBCA broadcast!

:bolian:

ok now ive calmed down a bit, Im going to add some others points

I was dissapointed that the holograms were rather flat looking 2D images, I think the use of those holograms are a great way to bring back past Doctors, but its going to need to be better than that. Why didnt he use the image of the TARDIS when she was human?

The regenerations, it would seem that River gave up her regenerations just to bring the Doctor back from deaths door (if not death itself), wouldnt be too surprised to see it retconed to say he has some extra regenerations, it also undoes any drama born of River having regenerations, as she is basically a regular human now, other than her bond with the TARDIS.

her being considered a war criminal maybe why the Dalek asked for mercy, after it checked its records on River.

I don't really like single episode stories. Very few of them work well in my view. As a two-parter I would have really enjoyed this but as it was the pace was just too frenetic. Some nice double bluffs involving River. It's very hard not to love her and easy to see how she could carry her own spin-off!

That was awful. I can't believe the show has turned into this. What absolute drek.

Probably a brilliant episode for a lot of younger viewers, but I found it a tad too silly and arbitrary.

Moffat's tenure in a nutshell, really.

There's a lot of stuff I liked this week, but I just can't get past the layers and layers of stupid that have become part of the show since RTD left. I mean, a robot Amy piloted by hundreds of tiny assassins? The entire cast mugging for the camera as a car drives them down? In a crop circle? The. FUCK? The show feels like a cartoon, like it should be animated in Flash or something, not starring real actors and filmed on location. And I liked JesusDoc from Last of the Time Lords, FFS.

That said, Mel's regeneration scene was brilliant, and I loved the new, dangerous River/Melody. She never seemed entirely trustworthy, even back in the Library two-parter, so it was nice to finally have that out in the open and confirmed. Oh, and Moffat is the king of amazing and witty montages. It was nice to see more of young Amy's life.

So...I can't really say this was bad, but I didn't love it. And, truthfully, I'd toss everything Moffat/Smith into the ocean if it meant one more season – one more episode, even – of Davies/Tennant.

Ok, so I missed most of the bit in the cornfield, and I felt that it was a little too over the top in places, the tesseract was really sort of unexplained and just there, sure, ok, it goes around punishing unpunished criminals but, it just felt like there needed to be more reasoning there imo, or at least some more back story.

But it never made me groan, or facepalm, or anything bad as I thoroughly enjoyed it. Which is something Who hasn't done for me in a long time/ever. So chalk this one up as a win for me, even though it was sort of all over the place.

Loved that we got some Amelia this episode, and young Rory was awesome as well, as was the moment where Amy realised that Rory was in love with her (and not gay!) The Mels/Melody/River thing was plainly obvious for all to see, and as soon as she got shot it was obvious what would happen next. But who cares cause it was so awesomely done.

As for the Teselecta, the effects of that I just loved, and it actually kind of made sense.

About the only thing I didn't like was Hitler himself. I wonder, I just wonder, if they tried to get the guy from "Downfall" (Bruno Ganz). That would have 1000 kinds of awesome.

Re: 6x08 Let's Kill Hitler (Grading/Discussion) (SPOILERS!!)

well, firstly shouldn't it either be 6.5x01 or 6x08 and not 6.5x08?... ;)

I thought there were a number of really great moments but it felt like an episode driven by exposition and spectacle than by plot.

i do hope we get more with the four regulars (yes, Alex is included as a regular for me! :D) in the back half of this series.

oh, and now that the doctor has downloaded his profile from robo-amy and knows more about his death can we assume he has/ will have a plan of action before too long?? :bolian:
