There was no plague. The Doctor knew this from actual history. The plague was a lie that the Calvierri's used as a pretext to close the city to protect their interests.
There was a plague, it was just that it'd ended a few years earlier.
Yes, many, many years earlier (around 200 years, in fact). My point still stands.
If you're referring to the Black Death, it didn't just disappear after its worst outbreak in the mid-14th century. There were many recurrences of it for centuries before it finally disappeared. There was one particular outbreak of bubonic plague in Venice from 1576 to 1577 which killed 50,000 people. It's likely that this was the plague to which the characters were referring.

This was a good, solid and most of all, fun episode.

Thought the 'mine's bigger' gag was funny, and Rory dueling with a broom hilarious!

The only thing it looses marks for is that it was all wrapped up too easily and far too quickly - another hapless victim of the stupid 45 min format.

Huh, I didn't know about the Venice plague.

You learn something new every day.

lol@everyone over at GB thinking that part of a cloud in the sky was a crack.

Why LOL? Looks pretty cracklike to me:

I must admit that if this is a crack reference then it is the most sublte one that we have had considering the smash over the head with a mallet references in VOTD and TBB.

I'm catching my roomie up on Who. Today we just got finished watching Boom Town from season 1. He pointed out that the white light from the crack is like the white light from the heart of the Tardis. That the Slitheen reverted back to an egg, everyone here disappears.

I bet somebody has mentioned this before on the other forums. But he just excitedly told me so I figure post it here. Haha.

Good episode! Lots of fun! I thought the Doctor was a bit heartless, but he tried to be nice at the end. :)

I'm always vaguely astonished to hear people say that. While I tend to agree that a given episode should be longer (they're only 45 because of commercials), all the same, the hour-long drama is the standard television format.

:shrugs:

Some stories work within the 45 min format, some don't work as well.

Basically, as it is now, your story either goes for 45 min, or if deemed necessary then 2x45 min.

For some stories 45 minutes is an eternity, for others it is really pushing it.

To me, this story felt like it's final act was all crammed into a very tight space time-wise. 45 min just felt too short - I think it would have been better at about 75 min (3x25 min in the old format).

This episode wasn't bad, but some of the scenes didn't seem to transition well from one another. For instance, when the Doctor gets electrocuted and knocked out, two scenes later he's sitting in Rossana's chair. I kept looking to see if I missed a scene, but nope. It just feels like an awkward transition to me.
