I've always gotten a Troughton/Tennant combo vibe off of him. Tennant moreso in "The Eleventh Hour," and Troughton more in every episode since.

David cgc: I think Bacl was responding to Classic Fan when he said this:
And the Doctor already going FORWARD to see what they had done so he could go back and convince them to do it differently, surely though to do that he wouldve crossed his own timeline (possibly again) as Amy and rory wouldnt been able to get out without him. Hmmm.
I was confused about this bit as well.

Average. I wanted to enjoy this one and it had sparks of entertainment in it. But, it also seemed to drag. Something didn't quite gel in this episode. It's hard for me to pin. I liked Rory and the dynamics between the 3 time travellers. The space fish were not compelling.

Yeah. That.

I have a major problem with the sonic screwdriver healing Amy's vampire bite wound. This crap is getting ridiculous.

I wondered the same for a moment or two, until I remembered that the Doctor, is... well... a doctor. I was pleased that as well as treating her wound, he also gave Amy something to counteract the alien blood she'd received - and I was half-hoping that it would be a jelly baby!

Just my thoughts.

Yah, I was saying "Aw, c'mon now!" when he used the SS on Amy's wound, but I quickly forgot about that when he popped the candy in her mouth, and she happily went "Mmmmm".
Then, when they were all sitting at the table while the Doctor was trying to think, I absolutely lost it when she starts talking about the "fish people" around the candy she's still working on. :guffaw:

Just rewatched it.

One new troubling thing that didn't occur to me before: The Doctor didn't seem at all concerned about saving this entire race of creatures. Sure, they were going to sink a city and kill hundreds of thousands to survive (or, a few higher-ups of them were) but there's an entire race down in the water and the Doctor didn't seem at all concerned to save them.

He seemed to have made up his mind about the aliens when the alien mother didn't know the name of the girl that was killed. At least that was my impression.
I don't think it's that troubling, though. Past Doctors have been rather ruthless in that regard, as well. It's just a departure from Ten (though I'm not sure he was consistent about offering everyone a way out, he did offer to help the villains with their problems very often).

I don't think that's a fair analysis of the Doctor's actions here. He didn't kill the converted women -- the father did. And he didn't do anything to harm these aliens -- he merely prevented them from harming others. And he tried to save the mother, the last surviving female, from her own suicide.

I'm sure the Doctor would have been willing to try and save them, but once the mother was dead, there was no more hope for them.

USA's turn! I'm afraid I didn't care for this one. First one of the season I thought didn't work. Come to think of it I generally find the historicals pretty boring in the new series, I think the only one I actually liked was "Fires of Pompeii". It particularly suffers coming right after that excellent River Angels two parter.

I agree. The future and present-day stories are almost always more interesting than the historicals.

Agree. You basically summed up what I was thinking about this episode, that just aired here in Australia.

I liked this story almost as much as I enjoyed "The Eleventh Hour." I liked it more than I liked the space whale episode, which I also enjoyed. It was far better than the Dalek dud, and it was also better than the Weeping Angels two-parter.

I see a lot of Troughton-like qualities in Smith's Doctor, too.

I was thinking that myself. Though I'm getting more of a "one straw from breaking and going batshit" vibe underlying a lot of Smith's doctor-- a creeping insanity.
