3D interiors in Blender

@CaptainSerek: Thanks! I hope to keep them rolling then! :)

@batboy853: I know what you mean, if I were to remake this bridge from scratch, I'd do it a bit smaller. However now the chairs, side consoles, doors, and all other identifiable elements are of the correct shape and size when compared to the Enterprise-D bridge. The side chairs do look a bit weird but I've checked them time and time again, they only look that way because we're not used to seeing that kind of chair used on a wall console.

I've started work on my next commission this week, and it's a return to the USS Quasar! I'm working on a lounge for the ship, pretty much its equivalent to Ten Forward. However, it's not just a Ten Forward redress...

If you look at the saucer section of Nebula-Class ships, there are no windows along the rim of it (at least on the physical model, when they did the CGI model they just kitbashed the Enterprise-D model without a care for these differences). According to behind the scenes information when the Nebula was conceived as the USS Phoenix, it was supposed to have a smaller crew than the Enterprise, and be less a ship of the line, and more of a workhorse.

Because of all this, we came to the idea that the ship would not have dozens of small lounges like the Enterprise has, but rather only one that's very big. It'll be two decks tall, and be on decks 2 and 3, with a balcony on the former looking over the main floor. Given its location and large layout the room will have windows looking both forward and upward. Because of its location, the lounge is called Two Three Fore.

The lounge itself will be a fusion of the Rec Room from TMP and Ten Forward, while incorporating several new elements like the aforementioned balcony and a main staircase to access it. I've started work on the side walls which are based on the aforementioned Rec Room, though each segment will be longer.

Cool. I like the idea of TNG-era set inspired by the Rec Deck, as so much of the other sets were the basis of everything from that time as well. :)

That should be interesting, especially with the "skylights." IIRC, Data, Geordi, and Worf all had quarters in that area of the ship on the Enterprise, but they never showed the windows.

@Lt. Washburn: Haha, that's right, it's one of the few TMP sets that wasn't kept long enough to be used on TNG.

@cardinal biggles: Indeed, those quarters should be below those windows according to the blueprints. We could assume (and indeed it's the solution we used on Stage 9) that the windows are covered by the lights, and these could be turned off to show the window into space, kinda like a mix between a light fixture and a blind.

I've modeled the basic shape of the front area and the balcony. I've also added the remaining TMP style walls, with the central panel being double the length of the other ones. This is because there will be little alcoves with tables behind these panels, that can be accessed via the space in between them. Logically, the central panel will have two alcoves behind it (one accessible via each end) and thus needs to be longer. Keep in mind that this is still very early and can change significantly before reaching a finished state, as that's the nature of doing a largely original room rather than one based on a preexisting set.

Also, here's a little diagram giving more detail to the room's location and size. The little red drawing on the right side of the image is a mirrored diagram of Ten Forward, to give you an idea of the size of this lounge.

@DanGovier: Your video regarding the TMP rec room proved quite instrumental on this. :)

I've been working on getting the scale right before moving forward, and I had to shrink everything substantially to get there. The area is still the same on the deck, but the whole room is a lot shorter on the Z axis. Turns out that the TMP lounge is actually closer to 3 decks tall (which of course doesn't fit at all on the TMP Enterprise), so I had to change the walls a bit to make them work with exactly 2 decks.

I've also filled in the remaining basic structure with the floor and internal wall. A Ten Forward style bar will be placed along this wall, with a giant screen on top mimicking the TMP one.

I've further modified the walls per feedback, and refined the lights a bit more, adding some different hues when the sources are seen at an angle.

I've also cut the ceiling windows in, I'll be adding details to the ceiling area next. particularly some more lights so that I can stop using magic balls of light to illuminate the room. :p

Oh, okay, now it makes sense. I had the wrong axis for mirroring in my head and had the interior rotated 90 degrees, so I couldn't correctly picture the lounge until I saw the last two screenshots. I was wondering why you had those tiny windows at floor level at the front of the lounge. ;)

@Matthew Raymond: Yeah I had a feeling I wasn't expressing myself very well, one of those areas where my English is still lacking a bit. I'm glad it's more clear now that the room is closed off.

@Lt. Washburn: I actually proposed that idea back when I was first approached to do this room, but the bar at the back ended up wining. :)

I've reworked the windows to be more accurate to the Nebula-Class model, as I had just done them on the Galaxy layout. Now the four windows on each set are evenly spread out, and have less rounded corners.

Other than that, I've started the bar area, with its huge screen on top, and I'm toying around with different ideas for the ceiling lights and details.

If you’re going that far, why not just make the seats recliners with individual built-in replicators? :p

Oh, I like the idea of built-in replicators, but perhaps built into tables and not seats (unless you're going for a more Movie Tavern (TM) kinda thing). Just have the meals materialize from a rectangle on the surface of the table, then the table buses itself by dematerializing everything on the table once everyone has left. Personal items left on the table are automatically transported to the ship's lost-and-found. (Of course, it would work the same with just a tray build into the seat.)

That would be a great venue for stock shuttle racing. :p

Given that presumably the replicators on Ten Forward have the same available items as those on crew quarters, I'd assume that the whole experience of going to TF is primarily a social one, and having a waiter tend your table is a feature rather than a necessity, though indeed your idea @Matthew Raymond would be more practical.

I've done a bit of progress on the bar area, and a lot more lights! We've decided to go with a more Rec Room style lighting rather than the darker Ten Forward style, so there are big ceiling lights now.
