What did you think of "The Wedding of River Song"?

Well given there were 7 eps in the first half and only six in this half that'd be more like Series 6.46, which to my mind has been better than Series 6.54....

And as for the "season numbering controversy" it turns out that ALL of you are wrong. This isn't season 6, or even 6.5, it's season 32. There was just a slight gap between seasons 26 and 27.

as long as it doesn't have a bloody .5 then i'm happy! :bolian:

No bloody A, B, C or D.

Here at Trekbbs we add a "0" to everything :D

I wonder if #9 for SFX's review is a Beatles reference.

1 First, a heads-up. We didn’t get an office preview of this one because, at Steven Moffat’s request, no previews were sent out. Instead, I had to go to the show’s London PR office for a private screening. But one thing’s for sure – if we had had a preview version in our office, I would have watched the whole thing over again straight away. Sadly, I was a little too embarrassed to ask the PR guys if I could do that there and then. Now I wish I’d gone, “Sod professionalism…”

2 The reason I’d want to watch it again straight away is not because it’s massively complicated and you need to rewatch it to make sense of it. In fact, it’s a surprisingly simple tale, though told in a clever way. No, I wanted to watch it again because a) it’s so rich with detail and b) it’s enormous fun.

3 There is technobabble, but that’s largely a red herring

4 The teaser looks like it was more expensive than the rest of the “back six” put together. It’s a visual and conceptual delight

5 It does answer a lot of questions, but some old ones (from Matt Smith’s first series) are still left open, and some new ones are posed

6 There are many, many glorious special effects sequences

7 The denouement is bound to cause some debate. If you like the episode, you’ll be able to rationalise it, but if you don’t you’ll be going, “But hang on, in that episode…?” But that’s Doctor Who fandom

8 You’ll discover a whole new meaning to the phrase “Live Chess” that has nothing to do with Harry Potter

9 The Doctor wonders if he could be the fifth member of something

10 Wi-fi comes in handy

11 There’s the return of an old look for the Doctor

12 There are some unexpected (truly unexpected) returning characters

13 There’s a moving tribute to an old friend

14 The Doctor offers and eye for an eye patch

15 A big revelation may remind you of Little Britain

16 There are some peculiar postmen

17 Somebody’s portrait looks nothing like them

18 The episode title may not be as much of a red herring as you might think. But then again…

19 Bow ties are not just cool, they’re useful on occasion

20 It’s a bit of a gamechanger

21 The eye patch is explained

22 I can guarantee that some people will go, “Oh I guessed that all along,” at one point, but considering millions of fans on thousands of websites have been discussing every possible outcome, it’s not surprising that some people will have come across it. I’m happy to say, I was pleasantly surprised. Maybe I’m thick

23 It’s not faultless – I have quibbles – but it’s ambitious, and clever, and unique, and surprising, and funny, and visually stunning, it’s emotionally engaging and it’s unlike anything else on TV. And I can’t wait to see it again

based on my so-so feeling for the majority of episodes for this season, I expect I'll be dissapointed by the resolution, but such is life. And I did note the tip of the hat with the numbering system. Though I think the whole .5 thing is more of an American thing than say a UK thing, As sometimes in America half seasons would be released on DVD and be numbered 1.0 and 1.5 whilst in the UK we would normally get an entire season in one. So perhaps this is where it started to creep in.

it's bloody Battlestar Galactica's fault!! ;)

SFX Wedding of River Song Review, SPOILERS

Thanks to Samurai8472 for posting this. I'll be forming thoughts.

This tells us nothing. Sounds par for the course.

4 The teaser looks like it was more expensive than the rest of the “back six” put together. It’s a visual and conceptual delight

If this is true, Series 7 should be Moffat's last unless he gives some resolution.

6 There are many, many glorious special effects sequences
Yea!

7 The denouement is bound to cause some debate. If you like the episode, you’ll be able to rationalise it, but if you don’t you’ll be going, “But hang on, in that episode…?” But that’s Doctor Who fandom
This statement bothers me. It seems to say that sloppy plotting is okay if the story is peppy.

8 You’ll discover a whole new meaning to the phrase “Live Chess” that has nothing to do with Harry Potter

9 The Doctor wonders if he could be the fifth member of something

10 Wi-fi comes in handy

11 There’s the return of an old look for the Doctor
I doubt this, but I hope that it has something to do with Tom Baker's brief voiceover in the Ganger episode.

12 There are some unexpected (truly unexpected) returning characters
See above.

13 There’s a moving tribute to an old friend
Gonna have to say Sara Jane, but the Brig deserves some love, too.

14 The Doctor offers and eye for an eye patch
So he offers the Eye of Harmony to Kovarian?

15 A big revelation may remind you of Little Britain
Somebody must be gay.

16 There are some peculiar postmen

17 Somebody’s portrait looks nothing like them
So we've got Churchilll returning. Perhaps this means Van Gogh, too? If so, they really need to expand on that unnecessary historical network thing from TPO.

18 The episode title may not be as much of a red herring as you might think. But then again…
Teasing dude loves to tease.

19 Bow ties are not just cool, they’re useful on occasion
If my highly unlikely scenario for items 11 and 12 is correct, then maybe a bow tie can be as useful as a scarf.

20 It’s a bit of a gamechanger
Aren't they all? I'm going to go ahead and say that River will be revealed to not only be the daughter of Rory and Amy, but that she is somehow Sexy the TARDIS, thus marriage and wifery.

21 The eye patch is explained
Well thank goodness. The eyepatch keeps me up at night wondering what it all means.

22 I can guarantee that some people will go, “Oh I guessed that all along,” at one point, but considering millions of fans on thousands of websites have been discussing every possible outcome, it’s not surprising that some people will have come across it. About not everything being answered... I'm betting that from "Eleventh Hour" we were already getting geared up for the 50th anniversary. I'm betting when it comes around, we're gonna find ourselves scrambling to our seasons 5, 6, & 7 DVDs to catch everything.

As I pointed out in the "Closing Time" thread I half expect everything to not be wrapped up in a nice bow. This doesn't seem to be how Moffat writes or wants to execute his story. I personally don't mind that. We will get some things addressed and clarified and solved, new elements introduced and set up. Just like last year. I still believe we are building up to a much bigger story than what we've been shown so far...what exactly? I dunno. That's part of the fun of watching!

Re: SFX Wedding of River Song Review, SPOILERS

Is this teaser different from the "prequel to the wedding...."?

And is it available anywhere?

Moffat, do your worst!

That's what I'm afraid of. In many ways, this season has been even more convoluted than Series 5's ridiculous time-crack. I'm curious enough to stick around and see what happens, but truthfully, the Doctor Who that I used to enjoy is long gone.

:klingon:

Some questions will be answered while more questions arise.

That's how excited everyone is!

Or bored.

Whichever.

I'm trying to restrain my excitement. I won't get to see it until two weeks after it airs because I'm about to go on vacation.

^And everyone was worried I posted the thread to early.

BTW if a mod really wants to pull rank and change the season number in the title, be my guest :)

Meanwhile... frankly I'm shocked beyond belief that the entire plot of TWORS hasn't leaked yet. Or maybe it has and I just haven't stumbled upon it. Could I actually watch the finale and not know what's going on? We'll see.

Yeah, that is kind of strange. I've usually accidentally glimpsed at least one spoilery fact this near to the broadcast date.

Indeed. I knew who was in the Pandorica and knew that Rory was returning before the episode (and I really wish I hadn't known). This time around, all I know is that Churchill and Dickens have small appearances and everyone is wearing a patch. And lots of time jumping in general. Lots of vagueness but no real spoilers.

Re: SFX Wedding of River Song Review, SPOILERS

Really looking forward to this on Saturday!!!

I'm betting that River has some connection to the Tardis too, hence the fact why she is a Timelord... she'll probably split in two creating suranne jones or something contrived and random like that :p

Re: SFX Wedding of River Song Review, SPOILERS

You know I'm thinking something similar. Or maybe it means "wedding" in that she'll merge with something. I really want to like this episode coming up, I really do. The "game changer" and "not all mysteries answered" items make me think that this is really going to suck. If SM doesn't wrap things up by the end of next season he should be fired.

Why? Why must everything always be wrapped up in a tidy little bow? Its BETTER NOT KNOWING IT ALL.
