Spoilers 31st/32nd Century Ships Revealed

USS Enterprise. NX-02

Or maybe they'll just start slapping emojis as suffixes.

In some far future episodes of Doctor Who they give coordinates as things like "five-point-four-slash-cup-slash-sixteen" or "five-point-five-slash-apple-slash-twenty-six". Took me an age to realise they were including emojis as part of their alphanumeric system in the far future.

In regards to the Enterprise, Starfleet may choose the simple registry, NCC-1701, because, truly and without prejudice, there is only one Enterprise.

The name, the missions, have transcended Starfleet lineage.

Or maybe have no registry number at all, because if there's one starship name that doesn't need it, it's Enterprise.
The Registry Number contains the <Single Letter Generation Suffix>

How will you differentiate between all the generations when you talk about one of the many vessels named "USS Enterprise"?

How will StarFleet Bureaucracy be able to identify which ship is which in it's records?

It's not like anybody uses the term "The Enterprise-D" in TNG era casual conversation unless it's relevant to compare against other Enterprises.

Most folks just call it "The Enterprise".

Historically, the <Single Letter Generation Suffix> is never part of the name, only the Registry #.

It's only ever appended to the Vessel Name in casual conversation when it's relevant to compare against the various generations of vessel using the same name.

You just know if there's an Enterprise in this era fans will want to see its adventures over that of the Discovery...

One tantalizing glimpse on screen of her will inspire collective gasps of wonder.

It's why I think they'll save it for a big event. Like revealing the original Enterprise at the end of season one.

IIRC, The J only had "NCC-1701" written on it, no bloody J

I can see a new Enterprise cropping up in the 32nd/33rd century somewhere down the road after both DSC and SNW have finished their runs.

Speaking of the Enterprise-J... I think it looks significantly more advanced (and it's certainly much larger) than any 32nd century ship we've seen so far. It's a really weird discontinuity.

Honestly, I think the writers probably forgot about the E-J. That, and the fact that it technically belonged to another timeline entirely. It’s possible that it never existed. We’ve seen nothing to indicate that it did, in the form of some hologram starship lineage display, like what’s been shown in Picard or Prodigy.

I felt the same way about the E-J for the longest time, too. But then I started flying one in STO. That thing is one bad-ass battle wagon. :D
