Spoilers 31st/32nd Century Ships Revealed

I wonder if those webs are the bussard collector analogues.

Also, here's the game's description of the Mars class:
"
Mars Pilot Escort [T6]
This starship's design was born in pursuit of alternative forms of FTL travel that do not rely upon a Dilithium-based reaction. The ship's sleek and streamlined structure, as well as relatively substantial propulsion subsystems, evolved from attempts to reduce warp bubble footprints, and otherwise facilitate the ship's travel using theoretical subspace propulsion techniques. Although the experiments with subspace manipulation ultimately failed to produce viable travel alternatives, the technology was still deemed suitable for defensive purposes, resulting in the Mars-class Escort project being deemed a qualified success. The vessel has been put into production by Starfleet with these specialized subspace emitters in place, but re-purposed to serve as deterrents against factions that might threaten the Federation.
"

With dilithium starting to get scarce in 2958, the Mars class may have been launched in either the 30th or 31st centuries.

What is that. :barf:

It's like someone added a modelling modifier that screwed the geometry up but they kept it anyway.

Not a fan of most of the 30th century ships really. After the above, the "bottle opener" Voyager is probably the next ugliest.

Then there are some that have no practicality whatsoever and are just designed because kewl (easily done, but it takes a true designer to come up with some beautiful and practical). Like why is the "new Constitution" covered in bandages? It looks cool but what purpose does it serve over just a regular saucer? Likewise the ring ship, why a ring?

The only one I think looks great is the USS Thant, definitely a standout for me. Not over-designed like most everything on Discovery, but clean lines, simple geometry and the ship itself is believable. At least in that image. I've not seen it in s3 yet but I'm sure the visual effects will do their best to show it off terribly, as usual.

Nothing about federation ships has ever been practical. The bridge for example, it's in an exposed, vulnerable, easy to shoot spot. At least 32nd century starships have done away with this for the most part.

Personally I like all of the new designs, but the Mars Class is without a doubt my stand out favourite.

A lot of heat in the comments of whether "Detached Nacelles" make sense or not. Suspension of disbelief. Most argue that detached nacelles exist to prevent another "Burn". Not all vessel classes seem to possess said nacelles

Angelou

tikhov type

Eisenberg

Saturn

Constitution

But is it conceivable they are infact, attached.....

1: Look at all the wireless technology in the trek universe.

"Remote power transfer" (TNG: the next phase)

"tractor beam"

' Particle beams via navigational deflector"

"subspace field emitter"

Given this is 8 centuries after events of 23rd century, imagine if someone told you you couldn't recharge your phone without a wire plug. So wireless transmission technology undoubtedly improved.

Second if you look at Mars class the nacelles and ship body look like they fit together, perhaps connecting to charge the vessel.

third, the nacelles May indeed be connected by "Pylons" that aren't visible to the observer. By the 24th century; Starfleet encountered races with technology to augment and place objects in subspace.

- Dominion: Mines in subspace

- interspacial manifolds.

Borg use it to send data across hundreds of lightyears and maintain physical ship hubs.

As did the Delphic expanse aliens with their Spheres.

The "Think Tank" vessel hides in subspace.

32nd century starships may infact have "Pylons" semi connecting nacelle to ship, but said pylons do not exist in real space, except when the ship is Shut down.

Indeed.
it is comparable to how our ancestors would be flabbergasted by the way we use magnetism or the Casimir effect for similar features, if on a smaller scale. It is conceivable that in the centuries hence, Starfleet learns to exploit another physical phenomenon that keeps components tethered to one another without requiring either a physical connection or active power.

Edit: Just a few more days until the book comes out and we'll finally learn the class names, and which ship is the mysterious Liu Cixin. Perhaps it's a Mars-class ship? The Le Guin is not mentioned in the Table of Contents.

It was a big deal early on that the detached parts of NCC-1031-A would all briefly reattach for spore jumping - and for warp drive. Was the latter supposed to happen with the other ship types as well, only the VFX folks didn't do any better a job with that during the finales warp chase than they generally do?

Going by STO, only the Crossfield reattaches its nacelles during jumps/warp.

I'd say it mirrors how only the Intrepid class swung its nacelle pylons into warp mode.

None of those ships are really that much bigger than late 24th century ships.
On an ego note, I'm preening that my Universe-class ship in STO is still the largest canon Federation ship class.
(Taking non-canon, licensed productions into account, the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-∞) is still larger, with a diameter of 250km).

Weird that they have some classes listed as Unknown that CBS officially named while Season 3 was airing.
Presumably, production of the book locked before those names were revealed in the promo posters.
However, this book has come out almost a year after the season's airing?

As was mentioned by other posters before, the Eisenberg class USS Nog has different hull detailing from what was added in "Die Trying" post-production.
