2399 Starfleet commbadge close-up

And Commodore Probert of Starfleet is mentioned over subspace radio in TMP, set in 2273.

It originally was removed due to foreign powers not treating American commodores as Flag Officers, thus the adoption of "Rear Admiral (lower half)."
I believe wedgies also had something to do with it. Giving someone the old 'commodore' didn't quite have the same pazzaz as giving someone the old 'rear admiral (lower half)'

1) Flag Officer of the lowest grade
Starfleet has consistently used Commodore for this rank, when shown, rather than the somewhat clunky Rear Admiral, Lower Half used by the contemporary USN.
TNG season 1 does feature one-star flag officers who are addressed as "Admiral" rather than "Commodore."

Trekcore has a photo of the new badge, or at least a replica being given out at the premier: https://twitter.com/TrekCore/status/1216892503703486465
I say this every time, but I wish the fan guesstimate from the early spy photos was the 2399 badge:

trekcore posted another picture of the swag combadge and now it looks like it's silver and gold (not black like in previous photos). is this a different pin or was it just a trick of the light in the previous shot?

Huh... those really look quite different. I wonder if this is a "what color is the dress" kind-of deal or if there really are different designs. Maybe the gold/silver version is standard use and black/blue goes with S31, like they do in Disco. They're pulling a lot from that series into this one - why not the badge design as well?

Perhaps it is a trick of the light and the combadge actually is gold / silver.

But something that's been nagging at me since the discussion about the apparent Rear Admiral Lower Half pip is: if this is an admiral we're seeing, what's the significance of her division color? How often do we see admirals in operations gold?

I believe there are two possible explanations:
1) We're seeing a Rear Admiral Lower Half in charge of something engineering related: perhaps the Starfleet Corps of Engineers / the rebuilding of Utopia Planitia.
2) Picard era uniforms are shifting back to command gold / operations red, perhaps to maintain a visual continuity with the redesigned TOS uniforms from DSC (and perhaps the rumored Pike miniseries).
