2399 Starfleet commbadge close-up

Why go back to Voyager uniforms
Because Starfleet uniforms are cyclical. You have jumpsuits with ENT, with the same colors as TNG, then the USS KELVIN solid colors. Then two piece style. Then back to one piece style with TMP. Then two piece, and on and on.

There is no logic to it.

He was an Ensign wasn't he? Single gold dot.
I don't remember seeing his rank in any of the trailers.

Edit: Ah right, it was seen in a leaked promo video.

Hm, so she's not a ensign. I guess she could be a NCO, or she's a Rear Admiral, Lower Half. Maybe not all Admirals wear that grey uniform.

Or it's a whole new thing.

I think "in-universe," the reason why Starfleet uniforms change so much is because Starfleet itself is constantly changing, adapting to whatever time its currently in, and nothing more publicly reflects that constant change better than the uniforms, IMO. I could see Starfleet ditching the First Contact/late DS9 uniforms not long after the Dominion War and a period of short-lived interim uniforms were introduced during the postwar era. The uniforms glimpsed during the trailers could be a PR office's idea of the fleet's return to simpler (prewar) times, but with some updates.

Current day Trek is normalizing different uniforms for different assignments. Disco has the old school blues, the Enterprise has the colourful unis with the collars, the ship from the Tribbles short has a colourful variant with a central zipper and collars. Lower Decks has a more colourful TNG-ish uniform at a time when Picard flashbacks and tie-in comics give us a very different mostly-black look.

In-universe it's like every ship has the Star Trek Online uniform changing app and the captains go wild with it:p

STO even had an in-universe reasoning for it, more lax uniform rules.

Not sure why they needed one. It's a video game.

Indeed. Perhaps they find it to be morale boosting to move away from uniforms associated with the war and a more exploratory style uniform.

Hopefully this means better dress uniforms.

The constant change in uniforms only occurs when TV shows/movies are in production anyway. Note, there's nothin set from 2293 all the way to the mid 24th century, and Starfleet kept the exact same uniform in that time period, minus the removal of the collar about half way through.

It's the "All Good Things" badge with the split narrowed, moved from the centre to the Discovery 2/3rds position and the top parts removed.
For comparison:

The emblem on left side of the uniform reminds me a bit on the combadge that Captain Braxton wore.

So we can agree it’s not an ensigns rank..,

Interested to see what it is, despite Admiral of the week uniform on TNG, we never saw two different types on one episode so I don’t think she is an Admiral...

If it’s one pip admiral, why does the other admiral have a completely different uniform?

Maybe they finally decided to allow Admirals to wear more sensible uniforms when in the field?

We'll know one way or the other in three weeks.

All I want to know is where these folks were at when working on a show that was supposed to be concurrent with TOS? One of the big things that has me excited about Picard is the fact they haven't fucked with the look.
