2399 Starfleet commbadge close-up

All I want to know is where these folks were at when working on a show that was supposed to be concurrent with TOS? One of the big things that has me excited about Picard is the fact they haven't fucked with the look.

This uniform is as "uniform" with TNG as the Discoprise uniforms are to the TOS uniforms. The truth is we saw two "classes" of uniforms in TOS: the RGB ones, and the blue jumpsuits. The Disco suits are just modernizations of this:

I'm a "you do you" kinda guy, but that is simply too big a leap for me personally to make.

And I'm not someone that thinks they should've just brought the TOS designs to the 2010's completely unchanged. At the same time, they acted like it was a binary decision: not change a thing or change everything. There was a halfway point to be had, to be faithful to what came before while updating it for the 21st century. We even see this in action with the Enterprise, its sets and uniforms. They weren't perfect, but in comparison to the Discovery designs they were magnificent. I did notice they took the Starfleet Bedazzler away from the Picard series wardrobe folks.

Of course, it is a mileage may vary type of situation.

I think it would be better to ask that question in the thread dedicated to the teaser. Which I just did.

It's obviously the same jumpsuit worn by Starfleet crew, repurposed by the costume department. So I picked the wrong picture. I think it's pretty clear what I meant.
It's not as clear as one might think. Even one of the Starfleet Magazine articles called it a "patient jumpsuit" rather than an actual uniform. It took me a bit of digging to find the picture I did.

I’m pretty sure this is either a Commodore or a Rear Admiral Lower Half. All admirals in TNG had pips framed by a box. They just likely changed the look to be framed by a trapezoidal design.

I’m intrigued by the potential notion that this might be a Romulan officer in Starfleet. At first, I’m wondering why she would have a differently-designed rank device, if it is a specifically Romulan designation. Then I remembered that the Maquis officers in Voyager all had different rank devices, as “provisional” non-Starfleet field promotions, all basically having a Starfleet analog of equal standing (but not quite).

If there is some joint Romulan/Starfleet officer exchange going on in the 25th century like they had with the Klingons in the 24th, it would make sense that there would be a subtle indication as to the officer’s origins. Also similar to T’pol’s maintaining of the Vulcan “Subcommander” grade on Archer’s Enterprise.

I definitely feel like some story elements in this new show have been potentially lifted from STO. Not sure if this is a good or bad thing yet, if true. We shall see.

I am very pleased that they got rid of the silly bumpy-headed Romulans in favor of more TOS-looking ones. Never liked the bumps for them. It seemed particularly silly to me that Spock could walk freely amongst them (ostensibly, in disguise) in “Reunification”, when none of the TNG Romulans were smooth-craniumed. He should have been immediately outed as a Vulcan, especially since they went out of their way to give both Picard and Data head bumps to “blend in”. Really bad sub-plot hole there.

Personally, I prefer something based on the captain's insignia for commodores where they wear the same uniform as officers or a plain collar on a flag officer specific uniform (as in TOS or the modern RN), and something a little less American-esque than the clunky "Rear Admiral Lower Half", but rather something more like Flotilla Admiral (used by the Bulgarians, Danes, Finns, Swedes and Germans in the RW) like say Group Admiral (commands a Task Group), Branch Admiral (minimum rank for HQ staff corps leaders) or Wing Admiral (commands a Galaxy or Cruiser Wing).

Personally I prefer the title Commodore over any Admiral designation. No idea why it was scrapped, either in TNG or in our Navy.
A quick read for history indicates it has come back as a honorary title for senior captains in charge of multiple units, squadrons or ships in modern usage.

It originally was removed due to foreign powers not treating American commodores as Flag Officers, thus the adoption of "Rear Admiral (lower half)."

IIRC, the US Navy eliminated it because confused some influential politician who didn't understand the difference between Commodore the rank and Commodore position. Star Trek removed it because Starfleet really is based on the US Navy despite all who claim otherwise.

Oh, shit, I just poked the bear by caressing the Forbidden Topic.
