2016 MLB Regular Season - It's an Even Year...

I'll admit to be still learning baseball. What are all the dates for baseball free agency and how does it all work?

How long til someone does a photoshop showing them going back to 2016 in BTTF 2, and snopes ends up debunking it?

Go Cubs!

And also, should issue a moratorium on stupid BTTF jokes. It was annoying enough last year when it was actually at least 2015, now we're delving into the 'maybe Doc just screwed up his coordinates' territory. Seriously, stop. Also, it was less of a prediction and more a way to show how strange and unusual the future was that even the Cubs had finally won a WS...

Also, should be a good series. Both fun, likeable teams, and on a personal note, it's like watching a Red Sox inter-squad game. So many connections there, can't be upset no matter who wins!

In theory, teams have until five days after the end of the World Series to tender qualifying offers to their pending free agents. Those players have one week after that to decide whether or not to accept the QO (which affects whether or not draft pick compensation is attached). The winter meetings are currently scheduled for December 5 - 8.

However, all of this is in theory. Normally, there would be other dates set in stone (like the deadline to tender contracts to players who are arb-eligible), but everything is up in the air because the current Basic Agreement expires at 12:01 a.m. on December 1. We don't know, for example, if the QO system will remain in its current incarnation under the terms of the new CBA. (It shouldn't, but this will be one of Tony Clark's first real tests as the MLBPA chief.)

Kyle Schwarber is going to be DHing Game 1 for the Cubs.

Come the fuck on, Maddon. What the Christ.

Wouldn't you just prefer to have Lester hit for himself? ;)

Seriously, though, why not? Got a big bat, let him take a crack at it. If he gets hurt (or just isn't panning out because of rust), can always injury-replace him next game. Maybe it's messing with the mojo of the team or whatever, but if he showed enough in the minors that he's not a hot mess at the plate, certainly worth a shot.

Schwarber went 0-2 with a walk in his first Arizona game and 1-3 with a slide-in double in the second game.

No worse than Soler at DH.

I feel like Kluber and Contreras don't really have stark enough left / right splits to justify benching one of the hotter bats in the lineup for a dude who hasn't faced major league pitching since April (and he looked bad in the AFL).

Heyward and Contreras benched, Schwarber at DH and Chris Coghlan in right field tonight.

I know Maddon loves pulling levers and pushing buttons, but, whoo boy, Coghlan's terrible in the field. Oof. I'm guessing that since it's an AL park, Maddon's hope is to jump out to an early lead and then put Heyward or Almora in the outfield after Cleveland's bullpen comes in, but Coghlan has literally been worse at the plate this year than Heyward so I don't understand what the fuck is going on here. I generally like Maddon's lineups, but sometimes he gets so far up his ass with nth-dimensional chess (both with lineups and bullpen management) that it makes no sense.

Should've put Zobrist in RF and Contreras in LF. Willi's a little better than Coghlan in the OF and a much better hitter.

And that would also have kept one of the team's hottest bats in the lineup, instead of trotting out Chris goddamn Coghlan.

Always my annoyance when the Sox used to see Maddon so many times a year. Does stupid shit just to do it and be a rebel sometimes, definitely can outthink himself. And the press just eats it up and tells us what a genius he must be because he played 8 guys over between 1B and 2B. Doesn't usually work, but hey, he's thinking outside the box, right? Crazy amount of love, but never won anything (yet). I dunno, just don't get it. Sometimes he just tries to get too cute.

Well, we just had about sixteen straight hours of rain in Wisconsin and that system is barrelling straight towards Ohio ... I have to think there's a very real chance of a rainout tonight.

As a surprise to no one, Yoenis Cespedes will opt out of his contract with the Mets. We knew this would happen and I really do wish him luck, hopefully he lands with a club he wants to be with. (maybe even us) He really was great for us while here, he's probably the reason we were in the playoffs.
