2016 MLB Regular Season - It's an Even Year...

Just saw a replay of a Cubs fan reaching out for a ball, before it was caught by the Cubs outfielder. I wonder if the fan realized he had a Bartman moment.

Anyone who has ever blamed Bartman for what happened in the 2003 NLCS (and I was fucking there at Game 6) is conveniently ignoring Moises Alou's tantrum, Alex Gonzalez booting a routine grounder that even a seven-year-old could have fielded, and Kerry Wood completely shitting the bed in Game 7.

A lot of the blame should also be put upon the Fox broadcasters who seemed to go out of their way to specifically identify Bartman, and constantly showed camera shots of him and where he was sitting. That endangered him as much as anything else that night - probably even more than Alou's hissy fit.

If not for the broadcast, nobody would have picked Bartman out of that group of six or seven other fans who were reaching for the ball. It's not like Alou called him by name, after all...

I've seen the same kind of argument against blaming Buckner for the Red Sox's loss in the 1986 World series ;)

Or blaming Don Denkinger for the Cardinals losing the WS in '85.

None of these incidents ended the entire series. People keep forgetting that.

If Cleveland does have to win the series, I wouldn't object to them getting the win off noted piece of human garbage Aroldis Chapman.

Anybody that blames a single person, player or not, for an epic collapse is nuts.

It takes a team, the whole team and nothing but the team to fall apart the way the 2003 Cubs did.

You could literally see the air go out of them.

Well, the Cubs are making it interesting. They should win the first game back in Cleveland and then hold on for an epic game 7!!

Also, game 5 dusted snf in the ratings department. Love it.

I was not unhappy when the Yankees decided to trade him off. Can't say a felt the same when the did the same for Miller though.

You know I was addressing the Bartman discussion right?

As far as Chapman, I think the Cubs need to keep him more than anybody.

Is there any likelihood that the Yankees could get Miller AND Chapman back?

Chapman basically said during the build-up to the trade deadline that he had no intention of re-signing with any other team and wants to go straight back to the Yankees. (Him making it so abundantly clear is why I wasn't exactly a huge fan of the Cubs dumping a pretty good prospect haul for a three-month rental.)

Come on, you heard Maddon, no one's perfect. What an awful, tone-deaf thing to say...

If and I do mean if the Cubs win the World Series, it probably was worth it.

You don't think Chapman might get caught up in this Cubs hysteria and decide to stay? Especially if they win the WS?

Realistically speaking, the Cubs have a relatively short window because while the offense will, theoretically and hopefully, continue to evolve, they're having a hard time developing starting pitching (Carl Edwards was projecting to be a front-line starter but he's only got the frame to go an inning or so). The free-agent market is dogshit for the next two years. Lackey's going to retire after next year, Arrieta is quickly proving that 2015 was a fluke and he's a #2 starter at best, God only knows what Hendricks will become and Lester's due to start regressing at some point.

If I'm Chapman, I only sign with the Cubs if they offer about a hojillion dollars.
