I'm reminded of Fry from Futurama describing Star Trek as "79 episodes, about 30 good ones".
I don’t think so. The first episode really seemed to present Picard as an authentic older version of the character whose thoughts and feelings were consistent with what we know of him. I feel better about what STP is doing for TNG than the TNG movies did, that’s for sure.
If anything I think Picard will elevate TNG. While I didn't dislike Nemesis, it was kind of downbeat ending for TNG. After a single episode they have already enhanced the rewatchability of Nemesis (I did get an urge to watch it again after seeing Picard), and if they somehow manage to resurrect Data that would even be more true.

Picard has completely changed the way I look at Nemesis. The fact that NEM is no longer the end of "TNG" takes the sting away from it. And the fact that it's effectively a prequel to Picard (along with "The Measure of a Man") makes it a necessary entry for watching the now-continuing story.
Nope. I personally love when new installments of the franchise change and challenge my notions of what came before. I've been watching TNG for over 30 years, and it has become (I have to admit) stale and mundane to me now. If PIC ends up giving it a new coat of paint by allowing me to view characters and events from a different angle, that's exactly what I want, and it will only enhance / renew my appreciation for it.

TNG is my favorite TV Trek (narrowly over TOS). Not afraid of Picard one iota.

The funny thing is that David Goodman, who wrote that episode, went on to write the Enterprise episode Precious Cargo - one of the all-time Trek stinkers.
Not afraid but maybe creates a bittersweet feeling. If the first episode is to go by this is going to be a great show but I think it does maybe take some of the magic away. Basically taking a more adult look at the universe is good from a artistic perspective but you also don't want your youthful feelings tampered with either and disrespected.
It is sad to think Picard spent so many of his later years angry and seeing himself as a failure and not as a hero that everyone in the Federation looks up to. One thing you can't say about Kirk is he was never seen as less than he truly was. He went out a legend befit of his status in Trek, even if the actually death scene was crap. well except for the "It was fun, Oh my" moment.

Yeah I agree and for my purposes Dallas ended with JR Returns. It could have and maybe should have continued but it wasn't handled right.
I agree and the new series can take anything good from Nemesis and build on it in a constructive way.
JesterFace asked a good question here. While I don't think Picard will hurt what I think of TNG that could happen for some or has happened with other shows.
It was worth considering this potential problem.
No one's gonna take away my beloved TNG and no one's gonna take away my headcanon(s). AND no one's forcing me to watch PIC. So... nope.
That's what they all say at first. They know how to get to everyone eventually!

What I don't watch I don't know (although in my case being a Sir Patrick fan - unfortunately - requires of me to follow the news along, which has been... exhausting, to put it mildly, I just wish things would quiet down already but I guess I ain't gonna get that wish any time soon). But, all in all, ignorance is bliss. And I'm also VERY good at ignoring things I don't like. For example, I have the X Men 3 DVD on my shelf in my Sir Patrick collection, still wrapped, never watched... because no way am I ever going to watch THAT. I know exactly where my limits are when it comes to what I can take in this regard.

I was fearing some major unneeded changes, like DIS did to the Klingons. And continuing post-Nemesis was really troubling, with the reboot inbetween and all.
But the first episode really managed to make lemons into lemonade. They retro-actively corrected the science of the Romulan supernova, and wove a convincing story around it, with the rescue-fleet, refugees on Earth - and all that only as background worldbuilding!
That was truly amazing. I'm still open to where the main story leads. But this is the first time since 2004 I felt the "old" Trek universe is back, in a new cloth. And regarding the new storyline - I honestly can't think of any other Trek series that started this strong. Considering the baggage (from Nemesis to ST09) that's utterly impressive.

Not at all, then again I am not in as deep as the rest of you are in all things Trek.
I watched the Picard pilot with an open mind just as I did Discovery.
I will do the same for the S31 show if/when it actually appears.
I have a list of shows I watch each season, the only thing that changes is the order that I watch them, with shows that I enjoy moving up the list and shows that I find lacklustre falling down the list.
Sometimes shows fall off the list altogether due to lack of time to watch them all.
I see now why they fast tracked Picard, they were pretty sure they had a winner on their hands.

With you completely on the enhancement if viewing. I have the inclination to watch Nemesis again myself, but someone else currently has my blu-ray movie set, and it's not currently streaming on either Amazon or Netflix in the UK.
