I was a bit worried. Yes.
I was fearing some major unneeded changes, like DIS did to the Klingons. And continuing post-Nemesis was really troubling, with the reboot inbetween and all.
But the first episode really managed to make lemons into lemonade. They retro-actively corrected the science of the Romulan supernova, and wove a convincing story around it, with the rescue-fleet, refugees on Earth - and all that only as background worldbuilding!
That was truly amazing. I'm still open to where the main story leads. But this is the first time since 2004 I felt the "old" Trek universe is back, in a new cloth. And regarding the new storyline - I honestly can't think of any other Trek series that started this strong. Considering the baggage (from Nemesis to ST09) that's utterly impressive.
