‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Renewed for Fifth and Final Season

It's amazing how some people can't comprehend the fact that we don't all worship at the altar of William Shatner as James T. Kirk and actually have legitimate investment in the newer shows.
I worship at the altar of James T. Kirk. The character is bigger than Shatner. I love how Shatner played him, but the character will outlive him. That's the true sign of a good character.

I think I'd offer a partial disagreement here. The deepening of lore really started with TAS. A surprising number of the episodes were given over to things like filling in Spock's backstory, returning to Mudd, returning to the Shore Leave planet, more tribbles, more Klingons, more Romulans, more Orions, etc.

Obviously, there was more than that. But they were clearly throwing bones to the developing fandom who was doing early theorycrafting.
Good point, I tend to overlook TAS when I shouldn't.

Be that as it may, the original series was wasn't really concerned with world building, but did try to remain consistent once certain things got fleshed out (the UFP and so on).

James T. Kirk is still the quintessential Federation / Starfleet Captain for me.

Anson Mount's portrayal of Christopher Pike is my second favorite Federation Captain and Avery Brook's Benjamin Siko is my Third favorite.

The characters of Picard, Janeway and Archer (as written) have never come across as good Captain's although as Archer is the first of his kind with not much to draw on - he gets a bit of a pass.

Picard isn't a Captain, he's a poor diplomat.

Janeway was written as bipolar in that whether or not she would consistently follow or not follow Starfleet directives depends on her mood in the episode. Not the actresses fault - it was all the writers.

It's been a while, but now I remember why I chose the "ignore comment" option for xxxxxxxx:)

OK Captain Jollydark. It's against the rules to refer to someone that you have on ignore. To be honest, no one cares who has someone on ignore. That's his/her business.

No warning this time, but next time, yes.

To all:

A reminder ahead of the season premiere. Tempers may flare and people will disagree on stuff. Remember, it's only a TV show. If you get emotional about it, it's a compliment to the writers. However, keep those emotions under control please. Do NOT get personal with your fellow posters. No insults, even tame ones. It's OK to disagree. The world won't end if someone disagrees about something. Honestly.

I don't even want a 20+ episode season. Can we find a happy medium though, like 13-15 episodes?

It wouldn't be so bad if there were 20 episodes, but the first ten were shown at the beginning of the year, and the next ten nearer to the end of the year. Having only ten episodes shown roughly within two months, and then not seeing any more until that same time next year, is too long of a wait IMO.

Ah, so the Prodigy approach. Yeah that could work. These companies need to find a way to keep streaming shows in people's minds because amnesia is a real thing, especially with all the content out there.

Though I too, miss the days of 20 episode seasons, I know that era is long gone. As far as SNW final season goes, I hold out hope that perhaps that sixth and final episode of S5 could be a two-hour one. To go out with a big, epic story. Just my .02 cents worth.

They have tested the waters with made for P+ movies, so having a SNW movie to wrap it up would be nice. It would already be better than Section 31.

Sadly, their test yielded less encouraging results than a random SpaceX launch.

Besides, Disco wasn't allowed a telemovie to wrap it up even before Section 31 shit the bed for any future telemovies. SNW doesn't stand a chance.

I’m not sure one bad (presumably—haven’t seen it) movie necessarily means no other movies. Cinema would have died an early death otherwise. Moreover, if the same people who make SNW to such acclaim made the movie, shouldn’t we be optimistic?

I think it has more to do with the fact that Star Trek is doing reasonably well with TV shows at the moment, as far as episode count goes the shortest of the current shows was thirty episodes at its own choice. There is no real reason to branch out to TV movies, and indeed the only reason Section 31 went that route was to accommodate Michelle Yeoh's schedule. If Section 31 were a success it might have led to more Star Trek TV movies, but since it didn't, best to stick with the proven success formula.
