Did anyone laugh when...

Sheesh, people, you knew it was coming. Just like every Planet of the Apes movie sneaks in a variation of, "Take your stinking paws off me, you damned dirty ape!"

 

Imagine the outrage had it been omitted!

 

The true role switch would have been if Carol screamed Khan. But simple role switches like this are always silly, and everyone knows that the right way would have been for Keenser to scream it. Did you know that the poor creature can, in moments of severe emotional affect, deliver unparalleled screams that you would have never expected?

 

Interesting, you make a good point. it would have been interesting of carol screamed Khan. than would have been less obvious and unpredictable.

 

And quite a bit more awkward since Carol Marcus was in sickbay with a shattered leg.

 

But, she could've screamed, "Khaaaaan!" after she saw him crush her father's head. Moment missed, I say.

Come to think of it, Kirk could've screamed, "Harrisssoooon!" after Pike was killed. Wonder how that would've gone over.

Or, Khan could've screamed, "Spoooooccck!" as the torpedoes exploded in the Vengeance.

Good stuff, all of that.

 

I have to say that the head crushing scene was great and Pine and Eve's facial expressions really sold what Khan had done without having to see it.

 

Agreed. Pine, in particular.

 

Or Chekov could've screamed....then it would've really been 1982 all over again. (which reminded us of 1979...which in turn reminded us of "Day of the Dove" and "Mirror, Mirror". )

The scream had to be there; Spock had to do it.

 

It was dumb and seemed forced.

 

It worked far better than in TWOK.

 

It became something of a meme over time exactly because the line didn't work well and Shatner already had a popular reputation as an emoting ham actor (well deserved or not). For some, over time it became the derisive example of Shatner as an actor.

If the moment worked in TWOK, then why would it become the butt of such humor over the years, since?

I can't imagine anyone getting really exercised about Spock's shout if the original one wasn't there to compare it to. And the odd thing is, it seems more often compared to the Shatner's shout in TWOK as ham acting, not the appropriateness of the shout as Kirk made it in the context of the movie.

 

I always preferred the original.

 

Shatner's scream reminds me of the overly expressive ("ham" in its worst/cheesiest examples, and I won't argue with anyone who calls it "hammy" in TWOK) nature often employed by actors trained for the theatre rather than film (as Shatner was). Olivier, Laughton and others (I'm not saying Shatner is/was as good as Olivier--before someone jumps on me for suggesting such a thing--though he was considered a promising theatre talent back in the day) have had equally overly expressive moments on film. The ham is on glorious display in one of my favourite films of all time--Spartacus.

Quinto's scream can be critiqued for its delivery (I don't mind it, but other approaches might have been better) but I fail to see how it can be considered less appropriate, in story, than Shatner's scream. The circumstances leading up to Quinto's scream are far more compelling than those leading to Shatner's. If Nimoy's death scene had happened just prior (at the same point in the film's elapsed time), Shatner's scream would have made more sense (though it might not have saved it from being parodied--we'll never know).

If the Quinto scream was not in the movie at all, I wouldn't think anything was missing, so in that sense it is not essential to the story by any means. However, if it is going to be in the story, there really isn't anything wrong with the timing of it.

 

kirk was not his best friend, kirk was his potential best friend.kirk and bones were best friends.

 

Kirk and Spock were definitely best friends through ID, even if Spock didn't quite realise what he had until he lost it. His jealous reaction to Carol is absolutely priceless. I'M THE SCIENCE OFFICER. I GET TO HANG WITH JIM. YOU ARE NOT WANTED HERE.

 

Spock seems to have job posting insecurities. he gets pissed at carol when she is announced as the new science officer, although he seems to let go of his anger with her when he realizes she was sort of a fraud.

he challenges captain pike's decision of putting kirk as first officer


he also does not put uhura on the right ship even though he knew she was right for the job on the enterprise.

Kirk and spock where friends but I would not call them, best friends in STID, If kirk wanted to have a serious personal talk with someone as a friend and confidant, it would have been Bones and not Spock. Bones was his best friend, they perhaps even shared the same dorms together and have known each other longer than they have known Spock.

My personal opinion is that they rushed the kirk and spock friendship. the writers tried too hard with their friendship this is proven by the remake of spock's death in wrath of khan.
