The Legend of Korra: Book 3

Red could be anyone in the Fire Nation, and the name is presumably a counterpart to the White Lotus. Or it could just be to imply violence, since blood is red.

Certainly sound's like a rival organisation to the Order of the White Lotus. Indeed this whole new group has had a distinct "Evil Team Avatar" vibe going on.

I wouldn't preclude Azula's involvement, but just the word "red" is hardly indicative. Even less so when you consider her name appears to be derived from "azul" (i.e. "blue".) Also, if it was a fire nation thing specifically, then you'd think they'd *all* be firebenders, no?

Not clear what they want with Korra exactly. Not to kill her evidentially, which makes sense since she'd just re-incarnate into an earthbender. The only thing I can think of is that they mean to eliminate the avatar for good somehow...but that feels like a bit of a retread of last season.

The episodes are so short hat I could watch the entire season in one night. I'd definitely go that option if I could.

I heard that the Red Lotus is what Zaheer's gang is called. We'll see.

What does he want with Korra? Perhaps her abilities after studying her. I don't know. I heard that we're supposed to find out in 3x09.

Or perhaps they want to send her into some sort of real or spiritual abyss from which she can never return.

The recent episode had the lowest rating of the show so far with 1.08 million viewers.

And the new scheduling will only cause a one-week delay until the finale. If they had stuck with two episodes per week, the season would have ended on August 15th. Now it's ending only a week later on August 22nd.

Word of it being canceled might have something to do with the ratings.

They were leaked online in Spanish so let's throw all the episodes out there really quick, then randomly just stick them online? It's all very very weird.

^Airing them online wasn't "random" -- the show has consistently performed extremely well online, even as the on-air ratings have struggled.

And let's remember that the 2-part finale of Book 2 debuted online six days before it was aired on television. So this isn't entirely out of the blue. The show hasn't suddenly been moved to an online forum; it's been there all along in parallel with the TV broadcasts, and has been doing much, much better there.

What we're seeing is part of the migration of first-run television to the Internet. I expect that if Konietzko and DiMartino create a third Avatarverse series, it will most likely be a Netflix original or something of the sort, bypassing conventional TV altogether.

I would really enjoy a third Avatar series.

Can you imagine the evolutional progression of a world that involves not only Benders but Spirits & Technology?

That would be one trippy Future/Fantasy series indeed.

I would love to see them do something set in a completely modern world. It does seem like the logical next step too, since we're already in an equivalent to the first half of the 20th century technology wise.
As for the episode, I loved the fight with Zaheer's gang.
I really don't see Suyin being a villain at this point. I didn't really see her encouraging Korra and the rest to go off as an attempt to put them in danger, I just thought she felt they didn't need Lin to protect them. I could also see her encouraging them to go after Aiwei being do to her feeling betrayed, and wanting to see him caught.

I've often thought it would be cool to see how a magic-based fantasy universe would work once it got to the space age, as a change from the cliched medieval fantasy setting. Maybe Bryan & Mike will actually give us one someday. How would bending powers work in space? What is space even like in a universe where the Moon is actually a spirit?

On the other hand, there is a certain charm to the period settings that I wouldn't necessarily like to lose.

That does beg the question whether the spirit world is a cosmic thing, or if it's bound to just this one planet. Perhaps other planets have their own spirit worlds, or equivalent? Perhaps each would be a reflection of their physical world. So a lifeless rock would have a spirit realm like a howling abyss where instead of taking the form of planets an animals, they'd be more elemental in nature.

It should be noted though that the moon spirit is not the moon itself. Was saw quite readily that the Lal (or the other one who's name I forget) left the spirit realm and took the form of a koi fish.

That said, I wonder if the sun has a spirit too (indeed, why wouldn't it?) and if so, could that mean all the stars have spirits. Something even more potent and primordial than either Vaatu or Raava?

There are certainly possibilities there for a sci-fi setting...

Except the Moon disappeared completely when the koi fish was killed. Which suggests it's not a tangible physical body as we know it, and is some kind of spirit manifestation like the vines in Republic City.

I can see an army of Firebenders flying off in their spaceship to try and harness the power of the sun.

Also, Vacuum Benders would probably be a thing.

Did it actually physically disappear or did it go into sudden eclipse? IIRC it was prettty open to interpretation in that regard. Don't get me wrong, there's clearly a physical link there and it may indeed have originated from the spirit world, but I don't think it disappeared so much as went inert.

Indeed, Korra seems to establish that it *couldn't* have vanished since with the portals closed at the time, physical matter couldn't pass between worlds.

...on the other hand there's Zhao and Wan Shi Tong's library soo...yeah, I have no idea how any of that works.

The Avatar franchise hasn't ever referenced "modern" physics like gravity, has it? I was a bit surprised when season 2 showed that the world of Avatar is a planet just like real-life Earth.

^ This show? Or The Last Airbender?

I've always assumed that it was a different planet rather than some sort of fantasy "flat world". Both shows have showed us that it's a planet. I don't know when that was made obvious though.

As for the moon, I wonder if anyone can come up with a real-world explanation for how it can turn red and then disappear. That would be quite a challenge. I've tried but haven't been successful.
