What if Neelix was less of a goofball?

He might have been useful as a Quark type character, setting up deals with other races and not giving Janeway the full details, but then we probably would have complained about him being a copy of Quark.

Any copies of Quark would be lesser Quarks.

I think the character works fine, he is savvy about some stuff but hardly a Greedo.

I've been reminded how different Neelix was in "Caretaker".

He's really like a rogue in that. He plays the crew for his own ends.

Compare that to the cartoon character he evolved into.

It's like the Voyager creators all went to the George Lucas school of creating embarrassing and pointless sidekicks.

^Neelix isn't the best character but he isn't as bad Jar Jar Binks.

I do like the scavenger Neelix idea. Keep his back story of his planet being destroyed the same and make him more of a nomadic space diplomat.

That may be why I have mixed feelings about him. He gets a personality transplant of some kind, becoming more cowardly. Then he suddenly gets his balls back in "Homestead".

^It could be because of that Talaxian female. Neelix is always ready to fight an opposing species for a woman.

I don't really feel like Neelix could have been a more serious character. Even his appearance is comical.

IMO he gets criticized for being jealous but his real problem was that he should have dumped Kes early on and just let her go. She was playing Tom and Neelix against eachother, then that mind-reading alien episode showed that she was somewhat interested in Tom as well. In the process she just made Neelix look bad even though he was right about Tom trying to pick her up. Horrible girlfriend.

Neelix should have had a revelation fairly early into their stay on Voyager that she was out of his league and on a trajectory taking her further out of his league with each passing hour.

But that's what almost all men think about their wives, unless it's about getting citizenship.

As soon as they think they can do better, that is when they leave.

No one wants to trade down.

Statically being the catch in the relationship is one thing, but Kes wasn't static. She was on an Ocampan learning and being curve that was reducing Neelix to the role of puppy. The only reason it was working out with Tom in the alternate timeline was because soon she would die so he got to be the catch by being younger and able to take care of her.

The main event was GOO day.

And what happened then, Neelix revealed himself to be a bumbling newb. Unlike Tom who obviously embraced all that biology and got with the program.

What's the difference between Elogium and Pon farr?

Biological forces demanding Tom's pants to fall to the ground.

Two fit girls, both in the grip of sexmania, gagging for a trip to the city of lights, whereafter to one he says "No thank-you" while the other suitor gets a baby stuffed inside her.

Hey the warp lizard babies? I wonder if that was a human choice, or an unavoidable instinctual mating drive like with the other two?

Amazing.

The same thing happened to him three times.

More?
