But if you want to guarantee that you get more airbenders in a couple of generations, you breed airbender with airbender. So Harmonic Convergence has provided.

I don't even know if that would help. Are two benders guaranteed to have a child who can bend? I don't think that's been addressed. Aang and Katara had a non-bending child, so it's possible but then again, they were from two different nations.

I've always wondered what would happen if the Fire Lord had children and none of them could bend fire.

Can't wait to see what's going on. Some of what I've read suggests that it isn't so much the harmonic convergance but the fact that Korra left the spirit portal open or something like that. You might be right though and it might have been the harmonic convergence itself.

Apparently if Zuko hadn't been a bender, Ozai would've abandoned him...

It also depends on whether or not we see some other sort of paradigm shift that ends the avatar cycle. For example, what if the nature of bending were to change so that Korra was either no longer an avatar or the sole person who could bend all four elements. It's something I've talked about at length in the Book 2 thread. This season is called "Change" but the whole show so far has been about change. We're only halfway through the series and so far we've seen the world entering the modern era, a movement to end bending, a harmonic convergence and demonic threat that ended Korra's role as the avatar (though temporary), and now we have spirits living among humans again along with a resurgence or air benders. It wouldn't surprise me if we saw more upheavals that culminate in a world without an avatar as we know it. Or who knows, Korra could become something greater than an avatar. We've got two books to go to find out. We've also got some new people looking to put an end to the avatar. I think we can expect to see a new angle there that we haven't seen before.

On a side note, its interesting that Raava was destroyed and along with her, the avatar memory bank, yet she retained the power of the four elements. I guess expedient storytelling was in order.

But Raava was restored and merged with Korra again, starting a new Avatar cycle. One could make the argument that Korra is the first of a new line. Fire started the first cycle. The new cycle began with water...

According to the Avatar wiki, the Air Nomads prior to the genocide were exclusively benders because their high degree of spirituality guaranteed bender births. So even though Aang and Korra had two non-airbenders, I think Jinora, Ikki, Meelo, and Rohan would have solved the problem naturally.

But Aang and Katara were benders of different types. Tenzin's four kids would, until the Harmonic Convergence, marry benders of other types or nons. But now, they might marry pure airbenders.

Today's the day. They delivered on their promise that we wouldn't have to wait as long for the new season. We only had a 7-month gap this time, though I'm sure that's due to the network having to move up the timetable due to the recent leaks. Here's an interesting article to tide you over...

'The Legend of Korra' Should Not Be Premiering on Nickelodeon This Friday

Three episodes tonight. nearly a quarter of the season in one night.

^I agree with that article. It sets a dangerous precedent to buckle under to pirates like that. I'm happy to get to see the episodes early, but it doesn't do the show any favors to cut short the promotion and buildup.

    Agreed.

    3 episodes? Tonight?

Luckily it's in my TiVo so I wouldn't have missed it, but still that's crappy promotion of the show...

I thought I had my DVR set to record TLoK, but I just checked and it wasn't in the scheduled list. I plan to watch it live anyway, but just a reminder that it's best to double-check these things.

This was awesome! It feels like the series is back on form. The band is back together, with a few additions (Jinora, Bumi, Kai). Mako and Bolin are a team again. And Korra and Asami make a great team, now that the whole romantic triangle with Mako is a thing of the past. (Is it wishful thinking that I was getting kind of a shippy vibe from their scenes together? I doubt Nickelodeon would have the courage to show a same-sex romance on a kids' show, but could it be the producers are tossing Korrasami shippers a bone, a la the Xena/Gabrielle innuendo? I'd be fine with that...)

    Other things of note... ahem...

AIRSHIP!!!!! I love the airship! As if I didn't adore Asami enough already, now she comes with a gigantic awesome airship that makes a perfect base of operations for Team Avatar's World Tour! How are the toy companies not all over this show?

    Also...

    ZUKO!!! ON A DRAGON!!!!!!!

Another wow moment for me was when Zahir broke that earthbender out of the second super-prison, and the guy showed what his special power was. Lava-bending????? It seems strange that an earthbender can create molten rock without having firebending -- but just as I started to type that, it occurred to me that waterbenders can easily put water through phase transitions, solid to liquid to gas, so there's no reason why earthbenders shouldn't be able to change solid rock to liquid in the same way. It probably just takes more chi energy because the melting point of rock is higher.

So it looks like the villains are a gang of super-bender criminals, one of each (although Zahir wasn't an airbender until now, which is oddly convenient), who have it in for the White Lotus and the Avatar. Hey... you know, it just occurred to me that we don't know how Aang died. Could these guys be responsible?

Seeing Mako and Bolin reunited with their extended family was cool, although incredibly coincidental given the immensity of Ba Sing Se.

Did anyone catch any of the voice credits? I recognized Greg Cipes as Mako and Bolin's fruit-vendor cousin, and Jeff Bennett as the farmer who refused to leave his family to become an air nomad, but nobody else sounded familiar. Old Zuko sounded a bit like Kurtwood Smith, but not enough for me to be sure. Anyway, whoever's playing Zahir, I don't care for his voice at all. It's just not an impressive bad-guy voice.

Bruce Davison was Zuko's VA this time.

Watching now. The Earth Queen is nothing like her father.
Also, it seems that Ba Sing Se hasn't changed.

As in Senator Kelly? I should've recognized his voice.

Well, the trains seem electrical rather than Earthbending-powered. And if anything, I think things have gotten worse. The old regime maintained order and stability in Ba Sing Se and kept the people placid and content by convincing them there was no war outside the walls. Long Feng was oppressive, but I think he was smart enough to maintain the appearance of stability, peace, and prosperity so the people would go along with the status quo. The Earth Queen, on the other hand, seems to be letting crime and poverty run rampant because she's too concerned with her own wealth and luxuries to bother with the management of her kingdom (queendom?). Earth King Kuei was clueless but well-intentioned; this queen is just a spoiled brat.

I was referring to the socioeconomic aspects, of course. And the Dai Li are just as bad as they were before. Anybody else think the Ba Sing Se airbenders will end up at Lake Laogai?
