The Legend of Korra: Book 3

My son and I just finished the first three episodes.

Fantastic!

So far, it has the right feel to it (JMHO). What's with these vines?

We really enjoyed it.

:techman:

A great start to the season. After a slow burn with Books 1 and 2, they really got things going in just three episodes. I can't wait to see what these super benders want.

I kind of feel bad for that woman with no arms. She has to be kept away from water but that's difficult because people need to stay hydrated, so I had a thought... What if they cut her arms off so that she couldn't use her hand movements to bend small bits of water in a more precise fashion?

We also got a love interest for Jinora with Kai. I figured he might have been lying when I first saw him and he told them about his parents.

I didn't like the pressure that Team Avatar was putting on these new benders to leave everything behind and go with them. It was very unbecoming of them but still, they managed to shift gears and put some humor into it which I liked.

And Korra is still Korra. A bit arrogant and hot-headed. I did feel for her though. We're in a new era with media scrutiny and she has poll numbers. Then there was that vine debacle that made things worse. Talk about pressure. Didn't ask for the job Korra? Be careful what you say.

This was awesome! It feels like the series is back on form. The band is back together, with a few additions (Jinora, Bumi, Kai). Mako and Bolin are a team again. And Korra and Asami make a great team, now that the whole romantic triangle with Mako is a thing of the past. (Is it wishful thinking that I was getting kind of a shippy vibe from their scenes together? I doubt Nickelodeon would have the courage to show a same-sex romance on a kids' show, but could it be the producers are tossing Korrasami shippers a bone, a la the Xena/Gabrielle innuendo? I'd be fine with that...)
I didn't think of the Korra/Asami 'ship but I did get to thinking that it might be nice if the girls started talking about sex and whatnot instead of just kissing. Might be interesting too if Korra got into a spat with Tenzin because she wants to share a bed with her boyfriend at the air temple or something. None of this will ever happen of course but I can sit back and imagine. :alienblush:

ZUKO!!! ON A DRAGON!!!!!!!
He was in pretty good shape. He's still walking and flying around on a dragon. I read Peach Wookie's post and saw that he was voiced by Bruce Davison. I could hear it but wouldn't have picked up on it if I hadn't read about it beforehand.

Hey... you know, it just occurred to me that we don't know how Aang died. Could these guys be responsible?
I thought that Aang fell ill in his later years and died due to having been in the avatar state for a century. That wasn't established onscreen though, so I suppose they can change their mind.

What's with these vines?
Back to nature. Whatever else is going on, we'll just have to wait and see. I'm sure there was a clue in what that hog said.

I was referring to the socioeconomic aspects, of course.

That's just what I meant. It seems to me that the economic stratification has gotten much worse. Before, there was a clear social stratification, but the lot of the poor didn't seem nearly as bad as it is now, with the people living in utter squalor and not even able to get edible fruit. While, conversely, the royal palace has grown even larger, more expansive, and more ornate, so it's clear where the wealth is going.

And the Dai Li are just as bad as they were before.

Except this time I think the monarch is directing them herself rather than being a clueless figurehead.

Oh, I didn't even notice she lacked arms. I thought I was just having trouble seeing them through the water. Damn, I need to buy an HDTV.

We also got a love interest for Jinora with Kai. I figured he might have been lying when I first saw him and he told them about his parents.

Yeah, Kai was an obvious scam artist from the word go. He was just too eager to join them, and his story was just too perfect.

And I don't think I like it that Jinora likes him. She's always been such a smart, together sort of girl, and I don't want to see her turning into a fool for love.

These characters are prone to make mistakes and struggle to figure out the right path, which is a good thing from a storytelling perspective. What matters is that they figure it out eventually. And it was really fun hearing Tenzin spell out the "attractions" of the ascetic Air Nomad lifestyle.

But Bolin's plan proved to be an excellent idea, and I loved his patter. "The one, the only man with an arrow pointing to his nose, Tenzin!" (I wonder if that was a P.J. Byrne ad-lib.)

I didn't think of the Korra/Asami 'ship but I did get to thinking that it might be nice if the girls started talking about sex and whatnot instead of just kissing.

Can't they do both?

Ming-Hua. It's going to take me a while to get all these names down. I've got Zaheer so far. I hope I can remember that.

Damn, I need to buy an HDTV.
Yes, do get one.

Here's some more trivia I found about Book 3...

- It has been confirmed that more information will be learned about earthbending in Book Three.

- Lin will play a larger role in Book Three than she did in Book Two, and more information about her family will be revealed.

- Bumi will also be more heavily featured in Book Three.

- It was revealed by Jeremy Zuckerman that Book Three will be more like Avatar: The Last Airbender.

- Due to Nickelodeon shortening the series' screentime, Book Three episodes will be twenty-two minutes long, down from twenty-three minutes as in previous books.

^Kai will be Jinora's Jet, I have a feeling.

So he's going to very ambiguously die?

Ming-Hua. It's going to take me a while to get all these names down. I've got Zaheer so far. I hope I can remember that.

Ah, so that's Grey DeLisle's character. Although I doubt a waterbender could be related to Azula.

And Zaheer is Henry Rollins, who was Mad Stan in Batman Beyond, Johnny Rancid in Teen Titans, and Robotman in Batman: The Brave and the Bold. Okay, he's someone Andrea Romano likes to work with, but I still don't find his voice very impressive here.

Ghazan is Peter Giles, who's unfamiliar to me, though IMDb says one of his credits was a video game based on the other Avatar, James Cameron's version. And P'Li, the fourth member of the gang with the Combustion Woman power, is Kristy Wu, one of the all-too-few Asian cast members in this Asian-centric series. Looks like she was one of the potential Slayers in the last season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Other guests include Skyler Brigmann as Kai, Jayne Taini as the Earth Queen Hou-Ting, Gary Cole as the Dai Li sergeant, longtime voice actress Susan Silo as Mako and Bolin's grandmother Yin, Mitchell Whitfield as Grand Secretariat Gun, and veteran voice actor Pat Fraley as the leader of the bandits Korra and Asami tangled with. For some reason, Avatar Wiki doesn't yet have guest cast lists up for the first two episodes.

Darn.

I really enjoyed the premiere.
I loved the fact that they pretty much got everybody back together and set off pretty quickly into the main arc of them looking for more new Airbenders fairly quickly into the episodes.
The airship is awesome.
I like Kai, he seems like he was a fun addition to the cast. I'm curious to see what other new Airbender characters they will introduce through the rest of the season.
The bad guys seems like they should be pretty cool villains.
I wonder if we will visit any other locations from The Last Airbender as the season goes on?
The stuff with Mako and Bolin meeting their family was fun.

Three solid episodes in a row! I love how the cast keeps growing bigger. How far we've come from those slightly underwhelming S1 episodes. I'd glad we're getting away from the awkward Bolin-Korra-Mako-Asami love rectangle and they're all just friends now.

The new villains are interesting. I like that there's a team with different powers. And an evil Airbender! We've never had that before! I'm also glad the Airbenders are coming back and Bumi is one. It's interesting to see how pervalent the White Lotus is in this time period; now only did they train the Avatar but they run all the prisons apparently. I don't think they've even been mentioned in the inter-series comics so far, I'd like to see the story of how they came to prominence.

I also like the idea of a little pickpocket being their only recruit, but I too could really do without the nice bookish responsible girl falling for the bad boy.

It was so cool to see Ba Sing Se again! I suppose the criticism could be made that they're basically redoing the same story from A:TLA but that's okay. I was actually glad to see the Earth Queen was not sympathetic to their plight, though.

Why didn't we see a single spirit flitting around Ba Sing Se? The vines at least I get would be localized to Republic City since that's where Vaatu attacked, but I thought this was supposed to be a world wide occurrence.

When are they going to reveal WHY Zaheer and his gang were imprisoned by the Order of the White Lotus?

It really annoys me that Zaheer could only have had airbending for 2 weeks max and yet he's already masterfully skilled at it. That's ridiculous.

Where does Zuko's dragon come from? It looks too small to be the red dragon master form the Sun Warrior city.

What's Queen Hou-ting's endgame? To conquer the United Republic?

If Zaheer's gang is indeed responsible for killing Aang, then what do they hope to accomplish by killing Korra? It would be years before they could pinpoint down the next Avatar. Unless they hope to goad Korra into entering the Avatar state wherein they could kill her and Raava.

Looks like Zaheer was already a master martial artist, so maybe he was able to apply some of that skill and wisdom to air bending.

Is there any evidence that Zaheer's gang killed Aang? Or is this just speculation?

As for them trying to kill the avatar, doing so while Korra is in the avatar state would do the trick but I expect something more clever that hasn't been attempted before. First we had Amon with his chi bending, then we had Vaatu extract Raava, so there's other options.

Why didn't we see a single spirit flitting around Ba Sing Se?
Good catch. Maybe it's because the place is a dump. :p But seriously, good catch.

The stuff with Mako and Bolin meeting their family was fun.
That was the least interesting part for me. I hope it goes somewhere good.

Another thing... I wonder if Zuko will run into Iroh.

[Edit] Okay, one more thing... If Wan could talk to Raava, couldn't Korra do the same?

When are they going to reveal WHY Zaheer and his gang were imprisoned by the Order of the White Lotus?

At a guess, I'd say... later. ;)

What's Queen Hou-ting's endgame? To conquer the United Republic?

I think she's just driven by greed and vanity. She wants to have all the stuff and not share it with anybody else, which is why income inequality has grown so horribly worse. So she wants to take back the lands that used to "belong to" her dynasty. I'm not sure she's thinking in terms of "endgame" so much in terms of "I want it now gimme gimme gimme!!"

Looks like Zaheer was already a master martial artist, so maybe he was able to apply some of that skill and wisdom to air bending.

I read a suggestion that he may have incorporated bending forms into his martial arts all along.

A wild guess on my part, nothing more.

Yeah, that does kind of bug me -- that so far the impact of the spirits' return seems limited to Republic City.

^ You and Enterprise aren't the only ones who are speculating that these benders might have killed Aang. Others online think so too. If that's the case, I'll be a bit annoyed because the show runners said that Aang died because his time in the ice caught up with him, so I had that in mind eventhough it wasn't established on screen. I don't want to jump to conclusions though, so I'll wait and see.

As for Zaheer, I found this...

Furthermore, Zaheer is well-versed in Air Nomad philosophy and history, mainly teachings of the legendary airbender, Laghima, who lived the final forty years of his life untethered from the ground. His extensive knowledge further improved his discipline and focus in airbending.
Source. Read the link to Laghima too.

This statement might hold a clue about what he really wants. I wonder if he has plans to expand his skillset somehow. Here we have a man who studied an air bender, runs a gang of super benders and now has eyes for Korra. He doesn't just want to kill her.

If this season's going to be more like Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Queen Hou-ting is bent on "reclaiming", then I hope Zuko's daughter the current Fire Lord will appear this season!

A thought about the evil benders... if they were responsible for Aang's death... maybe they mortally wounded him where if he hadn't been in the ice berg... he might've recovered.

<<Looks like Zaheer was already a master martial artist, so maybe he was able to apply some of that skill and wisdom to air bending.>>

Isn't his first line of dialogue a comment about how he's been studying the writings of an ancient Airbender?

Nick.com doesn't seem to have them available yet...and it looks like they only have a random selection of episodes from Season 2. I was going to watch the last couple episodes before diving in Season 3, but they aren't there.

And now the site won't even load for me at all, so who knows what's up...
