Orphan Black - Season 2 Discussion

Well, I'm pretty conflicted about this finale.

Stuff I didn't like:

Rushed, with a pretty anticlimactic resolution half-way through the episode. Some of the direction/editing felt a bit too flashy. Cosima apparently dying and having that hallucination struck me as cheesy and exploitative. What was the point of the whole convoluted-pencil-contraption thing? Marion was going to free Sarah anyway so it seems like it was there only for shock/revenge value. Sad to see Duncan go, he turned out to be surprisingly interesting. Helena getting yanked away AGAIN only minutes after the big reunion (did no one notice or care the next morning?).

Stuff I'm unsure about:

The dance party - on one hand it was cute, a nice opportunity for Tatiana to show the differences between the characters and a good technical achievement - OTOH, it was a bit too cute and fanservicey and I feel like Helena meeting the other clones should have been dealt with in a somewhat more ambiguous way (she is still an unhinged killer). Paul/Mrs S - Paul being a spy for the military makes him more interesting and the two of them actually play off each other nicely but the whole web of allegiances and "who knows what?" is so convoluted now.

Stuff I liked:

Marion isn't just a simple villain and has an agenda of her own (and a little clone of her own!), that's interesting - and it's great to see Michelle Forbes getting an expanded role. The Duncan/Rachel scene while he dies, great acting. The clone interactions - Sarah and Cosima talking in bed was such a wonderful scene (IMO, much more effective with its' subtlety than the dancing). Cosima in general was great this episode, like when she was doing "science" with Kira. Helena being adorable as usual. Mark and Gracie are still in the picture, they haven't just dropped out of the show. The male soldier-clones - originally I would have put this in the second category but the more I think of it, the more I like it, there are some potentially interesting parallels and conclusions to be drawn from that storyline.

The pencil thing was there because neither Cosima nor Sarah had any idea that Kira and Sarah were going to be freed. Cosima felt she had to do something to try and save her niece, and that was all she could come up with off the cuff. It also makes it next to impossible for Rachel to impersonate any of the others now, so there's that added extra bonus.

Also, come on now, what kind of archvillian doesn't wear an eyepatch? Not any type I wanna watch!

Indeed. The "Clone Fury" look will elevate Rachel's awesomeness greatly.

I liked that Cosima and Scott (who has slowly grown into a great character) took initiative but it was such a ridiculous and contrived plan. How did they know she would give Sarah Kira's drawing at exactly that point? How did they know Rachel was going to clear the room? Sarah could only take out one person with that thing and even that required the person to be at exactly the right spot so as to be hit in an extra vulnerable place. Besides, Scott was right there after she shot Rachel, so why didn't he just take Rachel out himself (he could have just, say, injected her with something, like she did to Felix)? And how was Sarah going to get past the guards in the building, even with that card? And why didn't Marian just stop the procedure herself if she wanted Sarah to go and was basically waiting for her? It seems like needlessly sloppy writing just to get a shocking but silly "take that, Rachel!" moment that could have been achieved in lots of better ways. Sorry if I'm nitpicking :p, but I was enjoying the episode up to that point and then that took me right out.

I did think about Rachel getting a badass eye-patch next season. :rommie: But I don't want her to turn into some crazy villain archetype, complete with a gruesome injury inflicted by the person she wants revenge on, and I'm afraid that's where they're going. I don't want her to turn good either, that would be impossible, but compared to the way Helena has been redeemed, just turning Rachel into a crazed villain seems pretty boring.

The season should hav been 13 episodes because the pacing has been off all year.

However the pencil thing still would have worked because of the fact Sara could kick everyone's ass and the virgin doctor could have helped. You are way too over thinking one thing in a show about clones.

While contrived I thought the pencil scene showed how intuitively the clones and Kira work together. Kira is a smart survivalist like her mum and aunts, stealing the phone like that too.

All the clones are starting to think of each other as sisters, even if Sarah and Helena are the only "true" sisters in that sense. So it makes sense for them to welcome Helena into their group, even though the atrocities she's committed in the past (which by the way, was due to the Proletheans manipulating her, a fact I'm sure Cosima and Alison are aware of).

And yes, it was fanservicey to hell, but I loved it because it's something I've been waiting for ever since Helena showed up at the beginning of season 2.

I REALLY FELL IN LOVE WITH HELENA THIS SEASON

lol

I don't get the fanservicey comment. They all want to see each other, they are drawn to each other, they finally show them together in a relaxed setting. We loved it. Is it fanservicey because we loved it?

^^^I guess so, yeah. The icing on the cake would be having Rachel in the scene too (how? I have no idea).

I enjoyed the scene because it's fun watching Tatiana play off herself.

After all the crap they all went through this season, wasn't it earned though? I mean it was the family reunion to end all family reunions, and I really love what it did for Sarah. Here's this girl who finally does have a family, and since we think Cosima is going to die, why not have one final fun night before the shit returns. I thought it was a beautiful scene and shows how far this show has come in just two seasons.

It was a great scene. I loved Helena dancing. I was a little weirded out at just how stiff Allison was with Helena, it seemed a little much even for her. But maybe she was not all that focused, maybe she was too busy thinking about getting back to the delicious Donnie and the freezer.

And If we're going to get on the other clones' case for letting a murderer like Helena into the club, leave us not forget what Allison and Donnie had in that freezer a short while ago...

You know, just now I was lamenting the fact that Allison didn't get a whole lot to do in the finale, and then something hit me:

In any other show, we might be upset a character didn't get a lot to do because that would mean the actor/actress wasn't featured that much...that's not a problem with Orphan Black though :D

I didn't mind Alison not getting a lot of screen time in the finale. Her story kind of wrapped up in the previous episode, culminating with doing it on the Freezer. You can only do so much in a 45 minute episode, which is why I really wished the episode was longer.

True SjShark, the previous episode was kind of Allison's finale. She is a fantastic character, I enjoyed her stories the most though Helena really shone for me this season. It's hilarious that we all have people we want to see more of on this show and they are all the same actor!

Which just further demonstrates how fantastic that actor is. They should just put Tatiana's name on the Best Actress Emmy every year and save some voting time.
