I think Thomas might help deal with green. I just don't want any pork from downton once he's been dealt with. As for Edith I just can't see a happy ending for her there is no way they can find her husband and she can't be a unmarried mother in 1922, so I can only see for her to be sent away and being forced to give up the child.
I also thought Mrs. Hughes was going to kill Green. I was bracing for her to sudden grab one of the canes behind her and thrust in his gut. Not very lady like, but I felt her fury. I was a little worried Violet would die from the bronchitis, but thankfully not. Just another round of her and Isobel bonding. The writers must know a large portion of their viewership would vanish with Maggie Smith.
Great finish tonight. Some foreshadowing for what may be coming for the Christmas episode. Glad to see that Bates didn't do anything stupid, but maybe I have my own speculation as to what happened on that street; a "gentle" nudge perhaps? And I was glad to see Daisy get more screen time tonight. She had hardly anything this season it seems.
Bates' answer to Anna was prectically admitting it, wasn't it, though? "I always have a good reason for the things I do." Like, you know, revenge. It did feel strangely satisfying, I must say. Daisy's storyline turned out to be a lot more moving than I had expected, especially the bit with Mrs. Patmore in the yard. I think there will be a lot of stuff that seems unsatisfyingly wrapped up now show up again in the Christmas special. I expect Mr. Green's death, Jack's and Rose's relationship and Mary's two suitors to play a role.
I dont know about Green coming up again. Gillingham said that there were lots of witnesses to the accident so I think (I hope) that storyline is done. Definitely seeing Jack and Rose again, she wont let that end easily.
I think that Thomas might find out about Bates' involvement in Green's death in some way and try to use it to his advantage. Then again, maybe the twist is that everyone just assumes Bates did it while he was really just doing something in York. It's odd they didn't show any of it.
Where the fuck is Gregson. I bet the Christmas episode will take place after Edith has gotten back and she just carries on like nothing ever happened.
Since this series almost everything interesting happened off-screen you might be right about that. It would be a shame, though.

Well it was clearly hoping for a suspenseful ending, but as a lot of people have pointed out online, travelling to London, orchestrating and carrying out the perfect crime and making it back to York in one day by modern car would be tricky, let alone 1920s rail. I really hope it doesn't turn out that he did it, because it really does make little to no plausible sense.
The Christmas episode, Mary is a moralistic cow one second, and ready to lie and thieve to save her skin the next. Almost every episode I like her a little less. There was not enough of Maggie Smith and Shirley McClaine. Christmas with those two verbally smacking down everyone for the whole episode would have been glorious. It could have been worse, nothing like Mathew dying to make a Christmas downer, but I am glad the war is coming to knock these clowns off their pedestals.
What war? It's 1923! Anyway, I thought the Christmas special was better than the season 4 finale. The finale kind of fizzled out...
I thought there was a lot of humour in the special. I enjoyed the sarcasm match between the Dowager Countess and Cora's mother. The fresh wind the Americans brought was also a nice change and it gave Carson an opportunity to shine. One of the best things of the episode was Daisy's and Mrs. Patmore's relationship which was just sweet to see. I hope that Daisy got all the hints dropped in this episode that she should take up the offer of her surrogate Dad. The scheme they came up with to save the honour of the Prince of Wales was hilarious. I got a kick out of them being so oblivious to the fact that they have a master criminal as their valet.
Oh I really enjoyed Paul Giamatti's performance. Having seen him in John Adams, I thought he was the best actor (and character) in the special. I hope it's not a one-off appearance of Harold! While Mr Bates continues to surprise me. He may be a murderer, but he is one skilled liar and pretty amazing at forging handwriting. I'm also glad Anna is back to her cheery self while it was rather kind of Mary to destroy the only evidence which could have implicated Mr Bates committing murder.
We already saw his forging skills in the episode where he came up with a scheme to have Mosley's debt paid. So, when they were talking about forging a letter to get entrance to Mr. Samson's (is that the name?) apartment I was thinking to myself that they should ask Bates. And then they did. In this episode we learned that he's also very good at being a pick-pocket. I appreciate Lord Grantham's not batting an eye when Bates told him where the letter actually was. It was very sloppy of him to leave the only piece of incriminating evidence in his coat pocket instead of destroying it right away. I wonder whether this will be the last we've seen of that storyline or whether it will come back in some form in the next season.
Well I started watching Downton Abbey from season 4 so my knowledge of the series is a little lacking.
Are we having another time jump at the start of the next season? Do we know? It seems a lot of storylines have made it to a point where they could take a jump into the 30s. The line about the brownshirts made me wonder...
1924 is just after the Beerhall Putsch (1923) and the SA (formed in 1920) was duking it out in street violence with Socialists, Communists, and in general anyone who disagreed with them, through out the 20's. Dolph was released in Dec of '24. Edith's beau could easily have run into a group in 1924. A time jump isn't impossible, 1928 to 1930 would be a likely place for new drama I should think. The Nazi's start becoming a political force to be reckoned with, Hirohito formally becomes Emperor, Chiang Kai Shek comes to the fore front, the UK goes off the gold standard ('31 I think) so a lot of stuff heralding the future that Shirley McLaine said was coming starts there.
