Speak to me of Merchandise

Well I am still waiting for the movie trading cards which have been put back to December 2013.

That absolutely SUCKS.
HOW CAN THERE BE NO KHAN ACTION FIGURE?!

There's to be one in Kre-o form.

Otherwise, I'm waiting for a "Sherlock" action figure to turn up... and I'll perform a headswap with a 2009 figure.

Kre-o, shmee-o. Pfft. NO interest.

And yeah that thought occurred to me too.

Maybe Startrek.com will sell some super expensive Cumberbatch special edition action figure at some point?

Revell is also releasing a model kit of the new Enterprise (after the kit announced last time by Round 2 got cancelled). It's supposed to come out this month, but not in the US so you've got to order it online.

Yeah, saw that. It looks really good but I'd rather have a ready made to display model rather than one that I have to fix up and paint. Kinda like the ready made one of the Ent-D that Aoshima released a couple of years ago..

The merchandising for these flicks has been a disaster. When Tron Legacy was released, I bought my nephews some pretty awesome light cycles and action figures that have neon lights and illuminating hologram faces that actually move and talk. They loved them and they had never even seen a Tron movie before.

What do we get for Trek? Figures that look like they're standing uncomfortably in a sweater knitted by grandma. Tragic.

The reason why the Playmates 2009 Star Trek action figures didn't sell well was because they did not look very good. I've seen better figures made and the figures they did were half hearted. The larger 12" and the 6" ones looked pretty decent I think, but it was the smaller 3.75" ones that didn't look really good, could've been better. I think they did good on the Enterprise electronic toy as well as the electronic phaser, communicator and tricorder toy props...

And did Playmates end up releasing some of these? >>> http://trekmovie.com/2009/06/13/exc...tes-2nd-wave-of-star-trek-movie-figures-toys/

There maybe is still hope though in Diamond Select Toys. They have the license to Star Trek. But currently, it seems their license are doing the non-Abrams Star Trek. They have been doing some great looking figures of TNG and TOS figures and ships.. So I can only wonder how good the figures would look if they were to do figures and ships from Abram's Star Trek....

I think the opposite of everyone else. I thought the small 2009 figures were OK. Certainly no worse than most of the cheap TOS figures.
I thought the 2009 communicator and phaser were rubbish with the silver paint over plastic. Compare them to the beautiful TOS phasers and communicators and tricorders. Of course compare the price also.
The Wave 2 toys did not come out. I'm still waiting to complete my bridge and transporter room. I even wrote them a letter asking them just to release the pieces for all those losers who bought Wave 1.

Are the Wave 2 toys in a warehouse somewhere?

No. They never progressed beyond prototypes. A mail order firm, NewForce Comics, even tried to negotiate to get the Wave 2 made as an exclusive, but they had to agree on a huge minimum run to close a deal. Too risky!

I didn't mind the Wave 1 3.75-inch figures--I grew up with the original Kenner Star Wars toys, so having exact likenesses was never a big issue for me--but the only thing I didn't like was that they didn't have McCoy and Chekov in their regular uniforms (I would have had their Academy uniform versions in Wave 2 or Wave 3 instead).

IIRC, though, one of the complaints retailers had about the Playmates Star Trek XI line was that there were too many figures in the regular uniforms as it was, resulting in them "looking all alike" on the shelves from a distance.

Art Asylum never went away. IIRC, they just work for (or with) Diamond Select now and gone back to how they originally started as a studio-for-hire.
