Where’s all the speculation?

I expected the conversation around The Villain of the Piece to ratchet up following the announcement of the name John Harrison. But that doesn't seem to be happening.

Have we all just decieded, “oh, screw it: we’ll find out at the premiere,” or what?

I initially thought it was a new character until somewhere Bob Ocri or one of the other writers said Benedict Cumberbatch played a character from established canon.

I never, for one second, thought it would be Khan. Gary Mitchell seemed more credible, and I thought what little evidence there was had been mounting more toward that direction, but I wouldn't have been surprised if it wasn't.

I'm just going to assume it's "John Harrison" and the name is what it is. Sounds English enough. If it's not, if it's another red herring, oh well.

EDIT: I did send a text to my brother jokingly saying "JOOOOHHHHNNNN!!!!" in reference to TWOK but that was just something that popped into my head after someone said "The Wrath of John Harrison" doesn't have the same ring to it. Kind of funny actually. Like "The Wrath of Bob".

I think most have accepted that John Harrison is the characters name and we're all more focused on wonder what he does in the film.

I think the issue is simply that over the last few months, so many people here thought the villain was going to be Khan, or Gary Mitchell, or Garth, or Kor, or [fill in blank with TOS villain name]. Now that it's John Harrison, a new character whom nobody knows anything about, there's really nothing to speculate about anymore, other than that he seems to be a Starfleet officer and a terrorist. What else is there to say?

There is a thread here where someone is claiming a studio insider suggested who John Harrison is an alias for.

But also, I think people are sick of being dicked around bay Bad Robot on this issue, as reflected with this article. Best quote to perfectly sum everything up:

Not really, as reflected in this thread http://www.trekbbs.com/showthread.php?t=196993

And as for where speculation is AJBlue98, did you even look around?
There are plenty of threads and dozens of pages here filled with speculation. One look at the first couple of pages shows as much.

Now that we knw his name, there is virtually no more speculation as to who Cumberbatch is playing. Before we were told his name, the speculation ran the gamut from Khan, Charlie X, Gary Mitchell, Gary Seven, Kang, Arne Darvin -- and even Trelane. However, now we know he is some guy named John Harrison.

As for his motives, again speculation of the villain's MO was all over the place, depending on who it was thought the character might be. Now we know a little more about the character, and there is a lot less speculation.

I think the speculation will again begin to pick up once people start considering what John Harrison may be all worked up about, or when we find out more about the plot (such as if London was destroyed and when, plus what Harrison's relationship is to our Heroes).

My bets are that he is Gary Mitchell. John Harrison made it to the galactic barrier and became more powerful.

I think "The Wrath of Ringo McCartney" would be a better name.

...but then again, that sounds like a "Western/Cowboy" movie.

"Studio insider" might be stretching the truth a bit, but I was referring to this thread.

I don't know about other people but, frankly, I'm bored. This "John Harrison" business better be good 'cos for a while there I was really hyped for Gary Mitchell and Elizabeth Dehner. And now? To tell you the truth, I feel a bit let down.

Oh, I'm sure Benedict will do a fantastic job playing this John Harrison whatshisname but.... I was kinda hoping it wasn't going to be another villain hell bent on revenge (I mean, ffs, didn't we already tread that tired ole line with Nero?) but it seems like that's all Orci and Kurtzman can come up with between them and their zillions of moolah.

I'm half-expecting Harrison to be revealed as Khan at the end.

I was suprised that Alice Eve was Carol Marcus and not Elizabeth Dehner - I rewatched "Where No Man..." and the ESP stuff Spock confronts Dehner about could have been lifted straight from an episode of Fringe.

The easter egg in the comic about McCoy and Dehner having a history was a very clever misdirection. Perhaps a red herring rather than a true easter egg - and there are lots more!
