Who Would You Cast As Captain Picard In A New Series or Movie?

Impossbile. Picard is one of the few characters that I think is impossible to recast with a new actor.

Yes, Patrick Stewart was THAT good. ;)

As a die hard trekkie I had no problem with re-casting the role of Kirk and Spock et al. But the thought of another playing Picard is tantamount to blaspheme!

And I grew up on the original series in the 70s!

Depends whether this is meant to be an absolute reboot, a quasi-reboot like the current movies are to TOS or a prequel/ sequel to TNG and the movies.

If they want someone who resembles Stewart, Hardy has to be the obvious choice, even though I never found him that convincing as a Picard clone in Nemesis. James Marsters might be an interesting choice. Kevin McKidd might also fit the bill.

If they're after someone who is not really physically like Stewart but brings similar authority and presence, then the likes of James Purefoy, Ciaran Hinds or Jean Reno would also work.

I'm generally of the belief that actors don't have a monopoly on a character. Admittedly, it's a tall order to play a role someone continuously inhabited for 15 years, but not impossible. Technically Patrick played Picard more than Shatner played Kirk, but the latter actor was associated with his role far longer, and they rebooted HIM.

Not sure TNG has the public recognition for them to ever attempt a JJ Abrams-style reboot, but I could see a fan-made adaptation in the style of "New Voyages".

Considering the recent trend, especially in the movies to make Trek characters into action heroes...

Michael Fassbender or James McAvoy come to mind.

Tom Hardy, perhaps.

Hmm... Fassbender would be an interesting choice. Mind you, why not go French and have Jean Dujardin (The Artist) as Jean-Luc Picard? That'd solve the French issue. ;)

Brice de Nice as Picard? No, just no.

How about Tom Hiddleston?
Sure, physically he's not very close but anyone that can nail the following speech (without hamming it up) can do Picard:

Picard will never be recast - the hard core fans would accept no substitute, and the general public would never be interested in a TNG reboot because ol' JL isn't a hip, swingin' brawler. Thank Zeus!

I suspect the same thing would have been said of Kirk a few years ago.

And the most iconic Trek character of them all, Spock. Now played by Zachary Quinto.

Since Charles Xavier from the X-Men movies is basically Picard in a wheelchair with telepathy, and they replaced Patrick Stewart with James McAvoy in the prequel X-Men: First Class, I say the Picard character can definitely live on without Patrick Stewart.

Er, no: as a hip, swingin' brawler, who was always chasing after ladies and punching aliens in the face, Kirk had/has a lot more mainstream appeal than Picard, and that should have been as obvious a few years ago as it is today.

It's like asking the general public whether they'd prefer to see a "Young Han Solo" or a "Young(er) Luke Skywalker " movie. The former's gonna win a mainstream public poll by a mile, every time.
