How Do You Take Your Coffee?

Since I go to Starbuck's or Peet's 98% of the time, I get either a latte or a cappuccino. But in the office or at home on weekends, I usually drink coffee with cream (Cofee Mate) and sweeteners (Splenda, Equal, Truvia). Lately though, I've been drinking Thai tea on weekends. This stuff's pretty good!

I have never had this 'mole' of which you all speak.

Mole is a sauce popular in Mexico made of cocoa and spices that often goes on meat. Chocolate was originally used as a hot spicy drink and in savory dishes by the natives of north, central, and south america. It wasn't until Europeans got ahold of it that people started mixing sugar in. Spicy chocolate is very, very good.

Beat me to it. I've never had it, but I know it was the original way to have chocolate.

^Get thee to a quality Mexican restaurant and order some mole, poste haste!
Really? TSQ, I thought it was you who recommended stevia sweeteners to me. I only use it for coffee, though.
Stevia, yes. Truvia, no. Truvia has another sugar alcohol mixed in with the stevia...one that is known to cause severe nausea and stomach pain in some people (not everyone, but definitely me). There's even a warning on it, if I recall correctly.

I can't say I actually know any quality Mexican restaurants. The closest I had to a quality Mexican restaurant was when the cooks at the restaurant I used to work to brought ingredients from home and made everyone lunch. At least, I can't think of any that serve Mole.

Oh, I definitely want to go some day. I've been to "Mexico," but I'm putting that in quotes because it was Cozumel as part of a cruise. But Mexico proper is part of my ever lengthening list of places I'd want to go to (or return to) if I had the time and money.

The only time I have ever been to Mexico was for my brother's wedding 5 years ago. It was a nice resort (Riviera Maya) and the reception was in Playa del Carmen. I had a great time, despite the timeshare-selling mob at the airport, but that was a minor thing which we were warned about in advance anyway.

I didn't realize that. Oftentimes I get nausea or an upset stomach anyway that it's hard to tell what causes it.

Unfortunately I haven't seen a lot of Mexico, just Mexico City, Puebla City, and the outskirts and surrounding villages. I would love to go back and see more of the country, though. Puebla City is a fantastic place to visit ... a perfect mix of native history, Spanish colonial history, art and architecture, natural beauty (the twin volcanos overlooking the city are stunning), cuisine, and night life -- it really did have everything.

One of the best nights I had was just exploring the city with one other girlfriend...we had drinks, visited shops and galleries, and bought a bunch of tropical fruits we'd never tried before at a massive fruit and vegetable market. Then we realized we were lost at 2am in downtown Puebla and so hailed a taxi. Neither of us spoke much Spanish, though, and while we managed to convey to the driver that we needed to get to our hotel, the driver didn't know where our hotel was....uh oh.

The hotel was next to a very famous 15th century cathedral, so I blurted out, "Iglesia!" Which would have been useful accept that Puebla city is famous for having something like 200 historic cathedrals. For the next half hour we drove from church to church, stopping in front of each, the driver pointing out the window and asking optimistically, "Iglesia?" and my friend and I shaking our heads defeatedly and saying, "No. No iglesia." Fortunately, the driver had some paper napkins and I can draw, so when I finally thought of doing a picture of the cathedral, he was able to recognize it and get us home!

And coincidentally to the topic of this thread, the best coffee I've ever had was in Mexico, brewed in traditional clay pots and served with flan. I still salivate just thinking about that coffee!

I just looked it up as I couldn't remember the name. The sugar alcohol in Truvia is erythritol. Wiki says that erythritol is known to cause nausea in doses over 50g. Some people are more sensitive to it than others. If I have just two packets of Truvia I am in horrible pain. I used to stick with pure stevia extract, but I've found that Stevia in the Raw (the same brand as Sugar in the Raw) has an exceptional flavor and doesn't cause nausea, so I buy that now. Because stevia has a slight bitterness to it that people find hard to get used to, most stevia products, like Truvia, also contain other sugar alcohols.

I'll definitely look for Stevia in the Raw. My fasting blood.sugar has been on the high side lately. Hopefully I'll get in better shape again this summer and keep my numbers down.
