Oh, I definitely want to go some day. I've been to "Mexico," but I'm putting that in quotes because it was Cozumel as part of a cruise. But Mexico proper is part of my ever lengthening list of places I'd want to go to (or return to) if I had the time and money.
Unfortunately I haven't seen a lot of Mexico, just Mexico City, Puebla City, and the outskirts and surrounding villages. I would love to go back and see more of the country, though. Puebla City is a fantastic place to visit ... a perfect mix of native history, Spanish colonial history, art and architecture, natural beauty (the twin volcanos overlooking the city are stunning), cuisine, and night life -- it really did have everything.
One of the best nights I had was just exploring the city with one other girlfriend...we had drinks, visited shops and galleries, and bought a bunch of tropical fruits we'd never tried before at a massive fruit and vegetable market. Then we realized we were lost at 2am in downtown Puebla and so hailed a taxi. Neither of us spoke much Spanish, though, and while we managed to convey to the driver that we needed to get to our hotel, the driver didn't know where our hotel was....uh oh.
The hotel was next to a very famous 15th century cathedral, so I blurted out, "Iglesia!" Which would have been useful accept that Puebla city is famous for having something like 200 historic cathedrals. For the next half hour we drove from church to church, stopping in front of each, the driver pointing out the window and asking optimistically, "Iglesia?" and my friend and I shaking our heads defeatedly and saying, "No. No iglesia." Fortunately, the driver had some paper napkins and I can draw, so when I finally thought of doing a picture of the cathedral, he was able to recognize it and get us home!
And coincidentally to the topic of this thread, the best coffee I've ever had was in Mexico, brewed in traditional clay pots and served with flan. I still salivate just thinking about that coffee!
