GI Joe 2

What I'm hearing is that they're doing the conversion for the overseas market where 3D is king (and where the first movie really made its money).

This is all data they should already be aware of is it not?

Did some accountant knock on a door and say "Gosh, gee willy boss did anyone notice the receipts on the first film are dominated by overseas take? And look how the global market eats up 3-D!! When does Retaliation come out again? It's in 3-D isn't it? What no, then it's never too late to move it I suppose."

All data that anyone who passively follows box office trends would know. Let alone the people who are paid to make it their business.

I think both this and the original were filmed with the intent to be 2D movies, so this sudden decision to convert the sequel to 3D just months before its release does come across as a spur-of-the-moment thing.

People at Sony have to be thrilled, this gives Amazing Spider-Man a much bigger box window with weeks after Prometheus and weeks before Dark Knight Rises.

The only live action movie I've seen in 3D is Avatar, so this pisses me off. I was looking forward to seeing this (in 2D).

I think it is funny that this movie gets pushed back a year and yet both GI Joe movies are still released in less time than it takes to release the next Star Trek movie.

Why would Hasbro go along with this? They're going get royally fucked on the action figures now without a movie in theaters to promote them with. It's not like they can push those back, too. They're already out, and on store shelves.

I'm bummed. I was looking forward to this, I still am, but other than a cash grab I really don't think it was necessary.

So finally, people are realizing that Hollywood has no idea what it's doing.

first, after the Hollywood blows its wad with avengers and TDKR, the general populace will have its fill of comic book films. Notice those two films will have their success in due not to 3-D (in Avengers case) but to years of build-up (for both). But is the general public really hungry for separate films again about the Avengers and then they reunite to fight more aliens? Were people really excited for Green lantern last year. Are they really all that excited for spider-Man again this year? And now, the studios have fears for the non comic book films like this one.

It's sad.

"You have been sank by Battleship*."

Just like that they killed a film franchise and a long running toy line.

WHO'S GONNA BUY MOVIE TOYS FOR A MOVIE THAT WON'T BE OUT FOR NEARLY A YEAR?

Besides collectors.

*I blame Taylor "Friday Night Blights" Kitsch. He's cursed.

Seen toy prices lately? Collectors are the only ones who can afford them anyway.

Well, to be fair to Hollywood, it's not like the FIRST GI Joe film did all THAT well, and this one isn't starring a Robert Downey Jr. (Bruce Willis isn't the star he once was, and The Rock never was).

So, yeah, studios SHOULD be concerned for a movie like this one, and if they can make more money here and overseas by upconverting it, then, that makes sense.

Moving it from a prime summer release date to a march release date indicates that the studio has no faith in it. And studio execs who claim that it will make more money at that time are clearly lying to us. They know full well it won't do as well.

Clearly COBRA has infiltrated Hollywood and is behind the 3D craze.

Hmm, perhaps that means James Cameron is Cobra Commander.

This is moronic. While I do have a deep fear that test screenings or something similar went poorly, it's probably no coincidence this announcement was made a week after Battleship opened. What no one at Paramount or Hasbro seems to grasp is that no one wanted to see a Battleship movie. Not even if it has Liam Neeson and Rihanna. Not even if it were their sex tape.

However, there is buzz about GIJoe. Or rather, there was. This movie is going to come out nine months after toy releases, tie in comics, slurpy cups, and whatever else has run their course, and Retaliation will have been handled about as well as Resolute and Renegades.

It couldn't be any worse than the initial offering of Gi Joe could it? It would have to be monumentally bad in order to be graced with that honor...

Why would they do it then? I can't believe studio execs want to knowingly make less money.

It could be any number of reasons. "Studio" execs care much more about the success of the studio than the success of individual movies.

There are reports of the Rock saying there will be reshoots on Retaliation.

There could have been some backroom deal that involved Ted getting a better release date.

Maybe with Battleship flopping hard they didn't want to release a movie that looks similar.

Whatever the reason, I don't believe for a second that it is because they woke up a month before it was due to release and decided to convert it into 3D.

Could just be a case that they wanted to move the film to a less crowded time and decided to do a proper 3D conversion in the meantime.

If they really didn't have any faith in the movie, they wouldn't fork over more money into it for a conversion. They would've just released it as is.
