So, it's up at DVD Empire now for $79.99 (SRP: $118.00)

I'm somewhat shielded from the sticker shock (got a $25 Best Buy gift card left over from Christmas)... but what does everyone else think? Would you buy it for $80?

It's a tad higher than I would prefer, but still VERY reasonable considering the incredible time and energy involved (it's not like this is the typical DVD set that probably just gets thrown together in a week).

Plus there's the fact it's TNG in freakin HD-- something I seriously doubted would ever ever happen.

Hell yes I'm going to buy this.

I paid $90 a pop for TNG on DVD. No way in hell am I spending more than $60 at max for the blu-rays. Fool me once, shame on me. Fool my twice... *shakes head*

:raises hand:

Ummm. How were you "fooled" into buying TNG's DVDs for $90 a piece? Did younot know what the price was going to be when you picked up the box? Did you not get exactly what you were expecting when you bought the set, that being the season of TNG on DVD?

Hell, if nothing else we got a LOT of box for that $90. ;)

I remember picking up each season of TNG (and DS9, for that matter) for $99.99 on DVD upon release. Some stores were even charging higher than that. A $60-80 price range for the blu-ray release sounds quite reasonable to me given all of the work that has gone into making these. It's not like this was a simple task. CBS/Paramount has gone the extra mile by going back to the original film negatives and re-cutting the entire series, complete with newly re-composited (or, in some cases, completely new) visual f/x.

I don't recall this being asked before, but does anyone know if the promos are simple ports (or up-converted) of the of the originals or were they re-composited as well?

Well in the UK I paid about £54 a set from a RRP of £84. And at the time I considered that a bargain, considering on video they would have cost £130 a season at the start of the run.

So I have no objections to paying £50 for the Bluray now.

Wow, coming back to TrekBBS after a LONG hiatus, to check up on the TNG-R news, I'm still amazed at how CHEAP the members are here, when it comes to buying their favoirte shows on Disc. Seriously people? $80 for a totally re-post-edited show that is remastered in HD from the old NTSC-VHS days? That's a steal! Considering that the DVD sets priced at around $100 10 years ago that just incorporated a slapped on digital conversion of the existing SD version, $80 after all the work CBS/Paramount put into reworking this series is nothing! Especially after we probably won't get but 2 or 3 seasons per year. Instead of a new season every other month on DVD like we did back in '02 at $100 a pop.

Couldn't agree more. People should quit whining and be glad this unlikely project ever saw the light of day. $3 per episode in re-mastered re-composited and re-edited hi-def glory is not too much to ask.

I'll happily pay $80 a season, but no more than that. I agree they've put a lot of work into it, but given we're expected to buy all 7 seasons, I'm sure as heck not paying $100+ for them. If it's 80 though, I'm happy.

I always said to friends that the only way I would ever double-dip on TNG was if the episode promos were included . . . and now they are! I am happy to pay up to the original DVD SRP cost for these blu-rays.

Promos? Whadya mean, promos?
As posted by the major Trek news sites a few weeks ago, the Bluray release will include the original episodic promos.

You mean the Episode Previews? These are major selling points for some? Even when they're included on big releases like HBO series and whatnot, I skip them. Why do I need to see a preview for an episode when I can just hit play for the episode itself?

For myself, I wouldn't call it a major selling point... or even really a minor one, but they do have some fun nostalgic value. I'll definitely watch them at least once.

Well, in case you hadn't noticed, the economy these days sucks.
So I hear. Blu-rays are a luxury, not a necessity. If they're too expensive, just don't buy 'em.

I don't buy a lot of titles on Day 1 because of the over-pricing of BDs, but I will buy'em when they drop below the $20 for films. TV shows are a bit different as number of episodes differ greatly between shows. So you really can't go by that. Almost gotta go price per episode and judge for yourself if it's within your budget.

IIRC, the price per episode for these Trek shows on DVD was around $3.85 @ $100 per season. For this HD set, it comes to about $3.10 @ $80. Not bad really.
