Promos? Whadya mean, promos?
As posted by the major Trek news sites a few weeks ago, the Bluray release will include the original episodic promos.

You mean the Episode Previews? These are major selling points for some? Even when they're included on big releases like HBO series and whatnot, I skip them. Why do I need to see a preview for an episode when I can just hit play for the episode itself?

Yeah, I'm with you. They are nothing but a fun novelty and in no way would ever influence my decision on whether to purchase or not. But that's just me... :techman:

Why are the episode promos anymore important that vastly higher resolution and better picture quality?

Nostalgia, plain and simple. I was six when Encounter at Farpoint first aired and I watched most TNG episodes first-run. Those episode promos would get me so excited for next week that I would be bouncing around with anticipation. I want to own that piece of my childhood. My memories of TNG involve picture quality that varied from region to region, but the promos were always there!

I don't recall this being asked before, but does anyone know if the promos are simple ports (or up-converted) of the of the originals or were they re-composited as well?

Likely AVC encoded SD with DD audio @ 192kbps (in other words, not in HD or even up-converted -- no point)... similar to how the TOS previews were on their respective Blu-ray season sets. It would take a lot of effort to replace the footage in the promos with the newly scanned footage.* I doubt an EDL even exists for them, so they'd have to be done manually.

* I suppose some crazed TNG fan with months and months of free time might try to upgrade the promos him or herself. Of course, the cheesy video transitions in between shots would have to be recreated in HD too! ;)

As long as the promos are a separate feature and not made a part of the actual episode. It annoys me to no end when I pop in an old DVD (for, say, Columbo) and I first have to fast forward through a promo that spoils all the biggest moments at the very start.

Sorry for an off-topic post, please delete or move if inappropriate, but inspired by this news (and the newly released Season 1 of That '70s Show on Blu-ray), I began thinking what other 1990s series I'd love to have on Blu-ray, and the obvious one is The X-Files. Interestingly, the Fox 25th Anniversary special that aired a little while ago had a segment on the show and it looked good, but I don't know if those were actually restored HD shots:

So I'm wondering how possible it would be. It seems like the same process was used as with TNG.

I think those high quality shots were probably from the last couple seasons, when the show switched to widescreen (either that or they were grabbed from the movies).

X-Files isn't a series I would want to buy, but it would definitely be cool to see some HD episodes rerun on TV instead of the crappy ones we see everywhere now.

Re: The OFFICIAL STNG-R discussion thread!

If they remaster all 178 episodes I would expect them to develop very good cost efficiency in the remastering process. If TNG-R sells well maybe they will use this expertise to remaster DS9 and VOY at a lower cost? There is always hoping! :)

The tech is always advancing...scanning the negatives into digital takes less time than 5 years ago, who know what will happen in the future.

The Star Wars blu-ray set was not enough to get me off my backside and finally buy a blu-ray player, but TNG? Oh, most definitely.

Excited to see what the first episodes will be (I know it sounds like one will be "Encounter At Farpoint"), and what the extras will be, new effects etc.

Compared to George Lucas' criminal treatment of "updating" the Star Wars trilogy, the TOS-R was incredibly reverential and appropriate, and I'm hopeful TNG-R will be as well.

Cannot wait!
TOS-R spurred me to buy and HD-DVD player. I already have a Bluray player, but I only own 3 bluray discs. STNG-R will definitely be on the list!

Seriously? There's still some of these animals? I thought that they were extinct. What animals, you say? Those that are either too cheap or too stubborn to buy a BDP. Not even a PS3?

Com'on folks, what year is this and what new fangled tech are you waiting for? The point is if you keep waiting for the next big tech to drop, you'll never have any tech. I'd like to get all new CD releases to be BD-A with DTS-HD MA, but we all know what happened with the DVD-A format. When any format becomes widely adopted, like cassettes, CDs, VHS (over Beta-Max), DVDs, and now BD (over HD-DVD), it's time to adopt to that format.

I continue to be amazed at his forum. For a sci-fo forum to have so many members that are slow to adopt to new tech, just runs contrary to the theme of the forum. It'd be like a wargaming forum with members who are viciously anti-war. I mean, what's the point? Like fighting them in pretend, but don't believe in anything strong enough to fight and die in one.

But anyway...

What are we still debating here anyway? Whether BD tech and proper remastering can provide a much better viewing experience than standard DVD? or what? Cost perhaps? That may have beena a good argument a couple years ago, but not now. Bargin bin BDs are as cheap now as DVD ever were. And players are as cheap as DVD players were as they were going out of style.

The problem is that a lot of us tech saavy people are wary of getting stuff that'll be outdated within a few years. Honestly, if it weren't for the fact that HDD prices are still jacked up after SE Asia got hammered by flooding, I'd just get 2TB+ external HDD and find an external Blu-Ray drive, check out the TNG-R Blu-Rays from the library and rip the stuff I want from them. The only problem is that it's hard as hell to stream large files to a set-top box or console, but that's easily overcome by hooking a computer to a TV with an HDMI cable.

It's not so much waiting for the next big tech item to drop, it's waiting for the price on the current tech to drop. Since I recently saw a Panasonic BD player on clearance at Best Buy for around sixty bucks, I think we're now entering the affordable range.

Probably still be waiting a while for the discs to get cheaper, but at least the players are now getting reasonable.

Bluray players have been in the sub-$100 range for a couple of years now. I got a Sony player about a year and a half ago for $75, for example.

Wow, coming back to TrekBBS after a LONG hiatus, to check up on the TNG-R news, I'm still amazed at how CHEAP the members are here, when it comes to buying their favoirte shows on Disc. Seriously people? $80 for a totally re-post-edited show that is remastered in HD from the old NTSC-VHS days? That's a steal! Considering that the DVD sets priced at around $100 10 years ago that just incorporated a slapped on digital conversion of the existing SD version, $80 after all the work CBS/Paramount put into reworking this series is nothing! Especially after we probably won't get but 2 or 3 seasons per year. Instead of a new season every other month on DVD like we did back in '02 at $100 a pop.

Well obviously for some any real amount of money for a luxury is out of the question. Others might see it as the accumulated price they spend on what they see as just one thing.

Personally I can't complain. Remember those wonderful days of paying 100 for a single VHS movie. Or how about (before Paramount released their own set) the Colombia house Versions of TOS and TNG. 19.95 or 29.99 for two episodes. Again on crappy VHS. Then the release from Paramount ob VHS and this now included DS9 and part of VOY (I don't think they ever finished Voyager on VHS), we also got before this laserdisc versions of TOS and TNG (to a point, they never finished TNG). Then we got two episodes of TOS on DVD (14.95 for two episodes is what I paid. Then we got season sets I paid anywhere from 50 to 90 for each season.

I am not rich by any stretch of the imagination (the most I have ever grossed was 50 grand). But its never been a problem. Just planning.

But of course, it has to be something you want.

This upgrade of TNG has made me invest in a Blu-ray player! It arrives today! I never thoguht I'd bother before now. I wonder if sales of these players have increased much due to this release?

It's called being cheap :p

To be honest, if there was a "Best of TNG" set with most of the episodes I'm interested in and the related special features, I'd probably buy it. I just can't justify spending $80 per season just to get a handful of good episodes and special features. If iTunes had the episodes and special features available for a decent price, I'd get it from them.
