Things to do in Indianapolis...

So my wife and I are going away for a cheap three day vacation to Indianapolis. The first time in a long time we've actually gotten away from the kids for any substantial amount of time.

So the question. What's there to do in Indy?

Not sure when you're going, but there is this:

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway, 4790 West 16th Street, Indianapolis, opens on Saturday, May 12, 2012, for opening day events leading up to the 96th running of the Indianapolis 500 on May 27. Public gates will be open from 10 AM to 6 PM on Saturday. Opening Day features the 2nd Annual Celebration of Automobiles, a vintage and historic car show, from 10 AM to 4 PM. Admission is $10 (under 13 free).

For more information, visit http://www.indianapolismotorspeedway.com/, or call 317-492-8500.

Guess I should have given the date range.

We'll be there the 14th thru the 17th.

The Indianapolis Zoo is supposed to be pretty good.

Honestly, I kind of shot my wad on Indianapolis suggestions after I brought up the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Indy 500. After that my next suggestion for things to do in Indianapolis was to become morbidly obese, so there's always that as a backup plan. ;)

Weekend without the kids?

Sex.

In Indy?

Cow tipping. Sex.

You could trade your tickets to Indy for a weekend in Cleveland. It will still just be a weekend, but it'll feel like a month!

I'm a bit biased here as my profession houses its museum and hall of fame on their premises, but if you don't mind the extra 2 hour drive to Auburn, the Kruse Automotive and Carriage Museum has some really cool stuff, including the aforementioned Monster Truck Hall of Fame. Plus there are a lot of other cool museums in the area, the National Auto and Truck Museum, the Auburn, Cord, and Duesenburg Museum, the National Military History Center, and a couple other museums.

I also recommend the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, although going on Indy 500 week is a bit dubious....

Didn't they have to build a little town inside Indy for Super Bowl visitors to have something to do during their stay?

Hey! I know the answer to this! I live just north of Indy and drive there every single week day!

The Speedway museum is very cool, but it will be exceptionally crowded in May, of course. The Children's Museum is awesome - it's supposed to be one of the best in the country, and I must say that I agree. The new state museum (it's only been open a couple of years) is very nice as well. There's also a world-class museum devoted to Western art - it's called the Eiteljorg. I am not really that interested in that, but even I can find things to enjoy there.

Also, if you have any interest in baseball, Victory Field (where the triple-A Indians play) is one of the best small baseball parks in the country. I'm not into college sports, but the NCAA museum looks nice from the outside. There's also a sorta-new Col. Ely Lilly Civil War Museum. I have no idea why I've never been there because it's been open for a few years now and I am very fond of Civil War history, but it's supposed to be nice, too.

If you want to know about specific sorts of things, BillJ, PM me and I'll do my best to answer.

If you can't visit the zoo, you could go the animal shelter. They both have sad animals in cages. And you can feed the animals snacks at the shelter, lots of zoos have signs that don't let you do that. You can pretend that the big dogs are zebras, the fat cats are bears, and the orange cats are lions. And if you get the staff mad enough they might throw poop at you like monkeys.

The Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg Museum is fantastic. One of my favorites! It is a bit of a drive from Indy, though.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions! Me and the wife are sorting through them now. :techman:

Have to say that after a few hours here, it makes Downtown Cincinnati look like a disorganized pile of puke.

Headed back to Cincinnati today. Was able to get a few Trek trinkets at the Half-Priced Books in Greenwood, Indiana. The wife stopped me from buying more.
