SPOILERS!!! NEW AICN RUMORS (APRIL 30)

Question is, is this Khan our Khan or is he going to be a Klingon-Augment.

Though I wonder, are they going off Spock-Prime in this one or is Spock-Alt going to get the axe? Got it: Spock-Prime transfers his katra to Spock-Alt.

That would make sense.

1. Cumberbatch is an excellent Actor.
2. He has worked out hard to bulk up for this film.

On a personal note are fans of the previous movie bitching about this one? Eric Bana isn't exactly a big name actor nor did he have much presence in the previous movie. I had some problems with the reimgained JJ Directed Trek 09 but this sequel gets my full backing of doing everything perfect so far!

agreed with those points above.

re Eric Bana. I blame it on Orci and co. They did a horrible job writing his bits.

btw, I giggled a bit at your .sig. Wonder what the Shatman thinks about Nimoy's role in JJ's 2nd movie ;)

He was an original character, and he was not a representative of a human ethnicity. And even as someone who really liked the last film, Nero was a pretty weak villain. Which didn't matter as much because to a certain extent Nero existed as an obstacle in the film simply because there needed to be an obstacle for the Enterprise crew to unite against to overcome.

In other words the film's great fun in spite of Nero, not because of him.

Thus it doesn't quite have the expectations that 'Khan' brings. Khan can't be a weak, uninteresting villain, because he's Khan.

Although, on the other hand:
He's Khan.

I really enjoyed the last film and it's quite possible that the guy who made the best Star Trek in a decade knows what he's doing. He's got my benefit of the doubt, anyway.

I have no doubt we'll be hearing his thoughts for the next year or so! Also this gives Nimoy a one up on Shatner having appeared in more Trek movies than him.

Unless they secretly filmed Shatner too. Maybe he comes back as a Hologram to shout "Khan!!!!!".

currently in India is an obsession with lightening of the skin---since the caste system is based partly on skin color. Maybe it continues...........

Which brings up a certain point that I'm sure no one really wants to address: what year is Khan from?

I'd still have to say later than our present because of our history and technology, but I'm sure there will be many who say it must be 1996.

So long as the story and the character is well written and Cumberbatch is allowed to do what he does best (act), then I don't see his race being a issue to the story. We're talking about a guy that is suppose to be Kirk's ultimate foe, the guy that almost beat him twice, I'm not going to be looking at skin-color, I'm going to be looking for a kick ass story and an actor that can sell to me that he is equal or better than Kirk.

LIES

LIES

LIES

I hope its a lie…I dont want KHAN

Its like trying to do a new Voldemort or Darth Vader.
This new KHAN will always be veiwed as inferior to the original and this could hurt the film.

THIS IS A HUGE MISTAKE

URGH

I've felt all along that if it was Khan, who was the villian in this film, that there would be no problem with that, it certainly won't be anything like WoK, since Space Seed hasn't happened yet, and since it's an Alternative Universe, I fully expect it to go much different than Space Seed.

It is a bit of a jolt, that they didn't go with an Ethnic Indian, but, since everyone says Cumberbatch is such a fantastic actor, I'm open to seeing his interpretation (Never seen Cumberbatch in anything)

Pine better limber up those vocal-cords, cause you just know there's going to be a "khaaaaaaaaaaaan!" moment in the film.

Question is, Khan has to seduce a female-Enterprise crew member to help him out. Perhaps Uhura?

Khan - bleh .... unless! it's a re-telling of Space Seed and not Wrath of Khan. Might be some potential there.

Nimoy back - eh, loved him in the first, but they should move on (and I wish Shatner had done his cameo for the first movie, maybe this one?)

Klingons - hope to see a mix of ridged and smooth head Klingons, maybe even some John Ford material?

The reason there won't be much "PC backlash" is simple: only the character's name and a few lines of dialogue in an old TV episode establish his ethnicity. The only association that most people who've heard of the character have for him is the actor who played him, who also didn't match the supposed character background and therefore did nothing to establish it.

I suppose there might be complaints from the Latino community... ;)

Cumberbatch's Khan will be as much as rehash as Heath Ledger's Joker was a rehash of Jack Nicholson's.

The story will be fresh - likely involving the Klingons having found and thawed Khan at some point after George Kirk was killed.

Now I'm SURE that Peter Weller is Gary Seven. Time to get cracking on reading those Eugenics Wars novels, me thinks...

Which is why I'm thinking this Khan might not be Khan-Prime* Possible Klingon augment would work and would be in line with Enterprise--the only show that skipped out on being diverged from.

Most likely though, it'll be a retake on Khan-Prime. Maybe with the Botany Bay having arrived at Ceti Alpha V and setting up a colony?

* (ahhh fuck me, now I have "You've got the touch" stuck in my head, but in Montalban's voice...fuck).

Early 1990s was when he was around for the first stage of his existence (the Eugenics Wars) before the Botany Bay took off.

Oh well, Star Trek *is* fiction, right? ;)

Assuming any of this is in fact true:

I'm always happy to see Spock Prime. Don't kill him.

Cumberbatch is an excellent actor. While I'm inclined to think casting him as Khan is a little odd, Space Seed Khan was the product of selective breeding. WOK Khan was genetically engineered. Who knows what JAbrams-movie-verse Khan will be? For all I know he's raised in Britain descendant of of Ricardo Montalkhan. No matter what, I'm glad to see Cumberbatch get a big movie role.

Klingons- Meh. I hope they get used well, because I am sick of Klingons. Please, oh, please have a fresh take.

If it's all bullshit, then nevermind.

Introducing a character like Gary Seven would be nothing but a distraction that would add confusion and pointless complications to the plot. A few TOS fans would dig it, at the expense of the general audience.
