Why does Darth Vader look so crappy in ANH?

Well, it depends on the quality of the theatre, and the quality of the print. I saw a 70mm print of 2001: A Space Odyssey at the Aero in Los Angeles a year ago and noticed small details that I had never seen, even on Blu-Ray (which looks great).

Was that the night the guy tripped out and started screaming during the dream sequence, or did that happen at the Egyptian?

That was in 1969.

In ANH Vader sent in others to do his dirty work ( Tantive IV, Lars homestead ).

And in 2010, apparently.

I guess I was thinking of the time Howard Stern saw it in the theater with some guy named Dave who eventually decided the movie was talking to him and hid under his seat.

I was being rhetorical about it mostly, as my roommate had actually been at that screening when that happened. I just couldn't recall if it had been at the Aero or the Egyptian.

I went to a screening at the Aero, which was after that had happened at the Egyptian, I believe. Glad I missed the freak out, honestly. Way to ruin the movie.

Really, then why wasn't he on Tatooine personally leading the search for those missing plans?

MAYBE IN THE REMAKE. ;)

Vader obviously let the stormtroopers do that shit. You know how much he doesn't like sand.:rommie:

One wonders why he wasn't at Jabba's palace with an army of troops to catch Luke at the beginning of ROTJ.

Deleted scene on the Blu-Ray explains that. Vader would much rather sit in meditation and psychically taunt Luke from hundreds of light years away. "Luuuke, Luuuuke...join us on the DARK SIDE (tm)!"

Plus the Emperor said he would come to Vader...later in the movie after that...er...maybe he told Vader earlier and reminded him. ;)

Which is why he LEAD the Imperial troops entering the base?

Vader was indeed portrayed as a henchman in ANH, answering to Tarkin, getting scoffed at by flag-level Imperial officers, and climbing in his TIE fighter to deal with problems personally. A lordly henchman, but still. Just because he had other henchmen performing tasks for him doesn't disprove this. Geez, the guy couldn't be everywhere at once.

In ESB, he commands flag-level officers and is answerable to almost no one (considering he can slaughter them with impunity). And barely sullies himself with the scut work at all. He's shown as a lord, not a lordly henchman. If his portrayal was the same as the first movie, he would have been in the lead AT-AT instead of General Veers.

Except on Hoth and Bespin.

If his portrayal was the same as the first movie, he would have just floated around in space letting others attack the base.

Exactly. And he would have been doing barrel rolls in the AT-AT and yelling "yipee" and "this is fun!"

Oh... you meant the "other" first movie.

Never mind.

Yep, in the oiginal '77 flick, Tarkin was the equivalent to Bond's Blofeld threatening the galaxy with his super weapon, making Vader the rough equivalent of "Jaws" or "OddJob", the henchman with the gimmick.

Sincerely,

Bill

Perhaps he just realized how freakishly boring that movie is.
