Sounds more like a Marvel Comics movie to me. The Mirror Universe might work in a future film, but not now. The new cast is too fresh and people are still getting used to them. Having them play evil Mirror Universe versions of themselves might be too much and get way too confusing for a lot of people.
And the IDW comics have already featured Yeoman Janice Rand, and briefly suggested a romantic background between McCoy and Dr Elizabeth Dehner, among other possible easter eggs.
That's what I thought. Abrams did state that the theme for the movie comes from the fourth issue.

Uhura always deserved to get more to do in the Prime timeline. I'm all for her having a bigger role on this Enterprise so long as she's written well and she isn't just some piece of miniskirted ass for Spock to snog when he's feeling insecure or bored. Saldana is a decent enough actress that I think she could handle some weighty material...IF Abrams and his gang bother to give her any.

Oh, I sincerely doubt she'll get the lead in any of Abrams' films...or have to carry a storyline. But if she gets to be the occasional hero and have a lot more dialogue than poor Nichelle Nichols then it'd be nice. Nichelle was a classy, gorgeous angel and did the best she could with what little Gene R. bothered to give her in the more race-conscious '60s, but let's face it...she got screwed.
If TOS was the big three, this seems more like the big two. But Uhura appears on a par with McCoy and as such slightly ahead of the rest. Who knows if that will continue but they do need her image for advertising I guess.
And yes, kind of ironic they had to paint guys black and white when they already had a "vehicle" for a racial message.
