RIP Whitney Houston

I'm stunned. One of the best voices of all-time and very influential on me as I was growing up. "I Will Always Love You" still gives me goosebumps 20 years later. She had some problems, and we should've seen this coming, but I am truly stunned. She was too much of a tragic figure, like Poe. This is perhaps the first artist that was such a large part of my life that has died.

I was shocked when I heard this news. I remember actually being moved to tears one time when I heard I Will Always Love You (Don't ask, I was very young at the time) and she did have a powerful voice. While her rendition of the National Anthem is not my top favorite (That belongs to the Dixie Chicks in 2002), it was still very good and very stirring. I can't believe how young she was. 48 is just too damn young. First Don Cornilius, now Whitney Houston. The year isn't getting off to a favorable start.

Her 1991 rendition of " The Star Spangled Banner" for Super Bowl XXV was one of the best public performances of that song. I'm glad to see the media playing clips of it. What a talent! And what a shame she has gone too soon. RIP.

When I was much younger, I always thought the lyric in the chorus was "You Can't Take Away my Big TV". After reading what the lyric really was, I just always smile.

I think that's what Whitney Houston did for me. Every song she had in the early to mid 90s made me smile, or just have an emotional response. I already said there was a time when I would actually start crying when I heard "I will always love you" and it's those kind of memories I will always remember Whitney Houston by.

The more I read about her the more I learn about her struggles, especially with Bobby Ryan and it's just a shame that abuse and drugs and whatever else (Not saying I know the cause of death however) can shorten what should have been a long and endearing life.

Which changes their opinions and reactions to those songs, how? What point are you trying to male? That artists cover material written by or for other people?

I was never a fan of Houston or the type of music she sang, but there was never a doubt that she was a talented singer. Unfortunate that in her latter years she was beset by so many problems and became fodder for the tabloids. Even yesterday one the tabs featured her on their cover.
